どうして「日本で何をしたほうがいいですか」というヘンな日本語を使うのだろう。これは正しくは「日本で何をしたらいいですか」だ。
比較できるものを提示していないのに、「ほうがいい」などという比較級は使えない。つまり「何」という一般疑問詞を入れた時点で比較すべき対象がないのが明らかだからだ。

I think it's interesting how words that I know the meaning of "stand out" more.
Like my brain has no problem memorizing long chains of Japanese syllables it has no meaning for, but once I get a meaning it really latches onto it.
I remember the #zutomayo song 胸の煙, むねのけむり, by the line
辛いより、もっと辛いより
which means something like
it's painful, more than painful.
辛い also means spicy, and I found the word used in Japanese restaurants also. #日本語

There are two songs I listen to which mention a game called Hana Ichi Monme 花一匁 (はないちもんめ)、 one is Yoiyoi Kokon by #Reol (Joshabi has a nice map of it for #beatsaber), and the other is 花一匁 by YouGuessedItIt's #ZUTOMAYO . This is a video of some kids playing the game. The two teams pick members from the other team that they want, then the two selected people play じゃんけん, basically rock paper scissors, to win the other to their team. I knew 新しい sounded like あたらしい, but the 新 I saw more was しん: Shinjuku 新宿, Shin-Osaka 新大阪. If I see Kanji in the street, knowing how to look them up is tricky. If they're completely new you can try drawing (HA), or if it's plain font you can Google Lens, but it doesn't explain the sound.

でもそれだけじゃない。わかりやすい語彙と文法を使う。これもレベルに応じて、だ。
ゆっくり話したからといって、熟語などを多用したり謙譲語尊敬語を使いすぎると、相手にわからないことがあるからだ。語尾を濁すのも日本語の特徴だが、これもレベルによっては難しい。

I suddenly had to teach my 4-hour introduction course on using #HPC systems in #Japanese this week, without time for preparation. I also did an introduction to the #Bash shell.
And to my surprise it went fine. Stumbled a bit on terminology ("embarrasingly parallel" is not actually "恥ずかしてきに並列" that I made up on the spot) but I got the ideas across, and people understood me without problem.
This experience gave me quite a confidence boost, and that doesn't happen too often.

TIL that 行く can be read both as いく and ゆく, with the later typically used as an auxiliary verb in the context of the passage of time. It apparently also has a poetic / literary quality to it.
Normally you'd use it with a て-form verb, but what I saw didn't use て-form, still don't understand that sense.

It just started raining out of the blue. When this happens in the late afternoon or evening, in Japanese this is called 夕立 (yūdachi). If you're a student of Japanese and want to make an impression, the next time you're out in the morning with a Japanese person and it suddenly starts to rain out of the blue, shout, “Ohh! 朝立ち! (asadachi)” loud enough for everyone around you to hear. I guarantee you will become an instant legend. People will tell tales to their grandchildren.

I was searching for the meaning for 雀[すずめ]: Sparrow.
My Daijisen 大辞泉 dictionary says not to use the kanji, only the reading.
But my Jim Breen Dictionary datafile based dictionary does not indicate kana only (uk).
So knowledgeable Japanese language people how is it written generally.

Studying #Japanese has turned out to be an unexpected boon for my philosophical studies and reflection. It is helpful to know a language that shares no roots whatsoever with English, to see how it expresses a concept and where the different etymological assumptions or metaphors lie in each language.

However, when I say “#multilingual”, #mathematics is one of the main languages I have in mind. In this sense, and since \( \TeX \) is still available only here, most of my posts are going to be published in this instance even if they are written in Japanese.
