Another day, and some more palaeographical puzzling. This time trying some very quick image manipulation ("auto color" option in GraphicConverter on my Mac) to make things easier. Could improve the colour/contrast balance even better, but this is a starting help. Not long since a French gentleman much giuen to quarrell presuming vpon the skill he had of his weapon, he caused a dagger to be made, and these words to bee grauen vpon it. I respect not any man. He did vsually carry this dagger, and playing one day, it fell out of the sheath and he vpon it, where-with he was so wounded in the thigh as hee had almost died. They're from an early #16thCentury #bookofhours (BNF Latin 9474 fol 127v), and were painted by the wonderfully named John Bumblebee, c1503-8.

#Lenten Stuff - a #16thCentury #ballad by William Elderton.
From MS Ashmole 48.

A good description of #Lent in Tudor England, with complaints (among other things) about an excess of #fish, #leeks and #nettles. It also mentions the traditional figure of #JackaLent, a stuffed effigy, usually made of straw, which was dragged through the streets during Lent, and burned on #PalmSunday.

A treat from Salisbury Cathedral - the cadaver tomb of Thomas Bennett, secretary to Thomas Wolesley. Bennett was deputy to the bishop and later held other roles at the cathedral until his death in 1558. The winding sheet (a form of shroud) lies open but it is still knotted at the feet and head. A skull is placed near his feet - gazing out at spectators as a further reminder of death! #MementoMori #history #histodons #Tudors #tombs #16thcentury

Kittens are adorable, but #16thCentury English #spelling is in a different league:
