Another day, and some more palaeographical puzzling. This time trying some very quick image manipulation ("auto color" option in GraphicConverter on my Mac) to make things easier. Checking the National Records of Scotland catalogue, and found this gem from 1548/9, the theft from convent of North Berwick of "the common seal of monastery and chapter as well as sone writings and discharges, to the great loss of the monastery." A skull is placed near his feet - gazing out at spectators as a further reminder of death! #MementoMori #history #histodons #Tudors #tombs #16thcentury
Kittens are adorable, but #16thCentury English #spelling is in a different league:
“And my good lord, for your honors better satisfaction, that it was not so barbarouslie nor butcherlie don as you thinck it to be, it should seeme your honor hath bene wrongfullie enformed, in sayinge he was cutt in manye peeces, after his deathe—for if he had bene cutt in many peces, he could not a lived till the next morninge, which themselves reported he did—which shewes he was not cutt in verie many peeces!”
Okay thank heavens eye-rolling is documented as far back as the #16thcentury, because I’m sure I can’t write an entire novel without it.
