TITLE: OT: "Polite" Codes in Racism?

I'm a 54-year-old White guy in the USA and I have to infer that there must have been -- at one time not too long ago -- racist codes for "let the White person go first". I was never taught them, but I have to infer this from a few decades now of observing the following:

When I am standing in a small family-run store checkout line, and elderly Black people are in front of me, if I have a cough or need to clear my throat, something very strange happens. All eyes swivel backwards to look at me, and the elderly Black people in front of me all but fall over themselves to waive me to the FRONT OF THE LINE. Sometimes if I lock eyes with the shop keeper at the register, HE waives me forwards. At this point, there is NO POLITE GETTING OUT OF IT. I can try saying "I'm so sorry, I have a cold", or "you are clearly in front of me, please proceed", and none of it will work. Instead, I am given excuses to help ME feel better about myself. "Oh, no, I'm in no hurry", or "I have not quite decided if I have everything yet", or "the shopkeeper and I were just talking, we will be awhile, so please checkout first".

To be clear, I'm not the one being hurt (they are), but I AM mortified and embarrassed.

I've had to develop special procedures to combat this. I always stand a little further back in line, NEVER make eye contact with anyone, look intently at merchandise while waiting to checkout, and UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ever clear my throat no matter how much I may need to.

I was reminded of this today when I (with plenty of room) passed an older Black woman in an aisle and merely nodded hello. She said "excuse me" and stepped backwards to give me more space. Huh.

Younger Black people don't do this (happily). Older Black people sometimes seem startled, like they have not encountered a White person coughing behind them in a long time -- but then their automatic training kicks in...

When I think about racism, I usually think about the more egregious examples (lynchings, denial of voting rights) but I have to wonder -- **what was it like to just go on a mundane daily shopping trip in 1960?**

QUESTION: Older folks reading this. Did/does this cough/throat-clear signal actually exist??

Thanks,
Michael

This popped up in my FB memories today. My family has passed down a Westinghouse Roaster Oven that as best as I can tell is a model RO-541 that was first manufactured in 1954. It only gets used once or twice per year to roast turkey over the holidays, always to perfection. Just don't ask what a 70 year old appliance does to the electric bill that month!

More info on the Westinghouse Roaster lineage from the 1940s and 50s. Quite the cult following:

Photo of the Day -- weekend

… BOOM! It’s the 1950s.

Throughout the 1950s, the US conducted above-ground testing of nuclear weapons in the Marshall Islands and a few other sites in the Pacific Ocean. The testing was part of the race to develop a hydrogen bomb, a second-generation nuclear weapon much more powerful than the atomic bombs used against Japan in 1945.

"I would argue, an underlying freak-out factor that figures into all these culture wars is that you’re seeing scared white population targeting any other they can find, and saying they’re the problem. …

If the boomers have done one thing, it's they've created a vision of America that is so negative right now, that a lot of our young people aren't interested in it."

After the success of Sunset Boulevard, Nancy Olson was paired with William Holden in Union Station. This movie has a Taking of Pelham 123 vibe to it, or maybe that should be the other way around because Union Station came first. The movie also has a noirish undercurrent and moments of genuine suspense. William Holden is very good. As for Nancy Olson, to be honest, I need to watch the movie again before forming a strong opinion on her role.

A photo from the March 9, 1959 issue of Life magazine. From context the accompanying mini-article at the bottom of the page this is the TIROS-1 satellite, so you can compare this to the actual first published image from it in 1960.

#space #nasa #satellite #history #1950s

An almost stereotypical male engineer or scientist (glasses, brush cut) is seated in front of an oscilloscupe, while a large model of the Earth with clouds looms in the background. A model satellite is near it, though it doesn't actually look much like the TIROS-1 it's presumed to represent.
The first published image from TIROS-1's mission, looking rather like the globe from the first picture though close up -- you can only see the limb of the Earth and part of the visible hemisphere is cut off at top and bottom.

2)Turtle is so startled by what he is reading that he jumps up and yells "YOWP!"
3)Turtle lies prone on ground and says "This comic book shows how we goes up to Mars, brings back some Martians an' they DEE-STROYS the whole EARTH!"
Porcupine replies, "What nonsense! Bringin' Martians back."

The opening line to the song [Yakety Yak](https://youtu.be/HRA3majpFXI) is "Take out the papers and the trash". The song was made famous by The Coasters in *1958*.
This has set me down a weird rabbit hole of trying to determine *was there paper recycling in 1958?* ... near as I can tell, yes, there was, but not as a we-will-come-pick-it-up service, like trash collection.
So I am left wondering *why make the distinction between papers and trash?*
Besides the obvious "we need some syllables to go in this line of the song".

1951's Festival of Britain featured an unusual nod toward both past and future. The only old building on site was a shot tower (an obsolete way of making small lead balls) from 1826, on which they constructed a radio telescope.

The telescope was built by Leland Equipment assisted by Jodrell Bank. The plan was to allow visitors to see signals bouncing off the Moon, but they couldn't get it working during the Festival. It did later accomplish it after moving to Jodrell Bank.

I'm fascinated with the extent to which space imagery injected itself into unrelated fields post-Sputnik. This ad is for the high-end furniture company Dunbar, the home of noted designer Edward Wormley. They focused exclusively on Modern styles, and since rockets were the future we end up with this weird juxtaposition of elements....

Date uncertain, but I've found other Dunbar ads following this format from 1957-1962.

Another image using the "step" term I mentioned yesterday, in this case its title being "2-Step Space Station Rocket" from 1952. It's an illustration by Jack Coggins for a book co-written with Fletcher Pratt. Both straddled the line between illustrating/writing for science and science fiction. Coggins in particular did covers for Galaxy, F&SF, and Thrilling Wonder.

He was also into other bleeding-edge forms of transportation, as shown in the second pic.

At atmospheric picture picture of a stour rocket at night, with stars in the sky behind it and lighting from the ground illuminating it. It's in scaffolding and the details on the ground resemble a construction site.
The cover of a book called "Prepare to Dive! The Story of Man Undersea". It's listed as being Written and Illustrated by Jack Coggins. It is monochromatic blue/black/white and shows a diving sphere, a blueprint of what appears to be an early submarine, and a scuba diver.

Then and now.
An old 1950s (?) image of Cleobury Mortimer in Shropshire brought up to date with the equivalent view in 2023.
I was able to find almost the exact spot where the original was taken from which meant it was fairly straightforward to combine the 2 images in GIMP.

Not my photos. Obviously.

Fell down an internet rabbit hole and ended up here at the Vintage Pool Party group on Flickr dedicated to vintage swimming pool imagery from the 1930s to 1980s. It's mostly from 50s and 60s American motel postcards and I love this design aesthetic that includes lots of great examples of Googie architecture with its then-futuristic style.

https://www.flickr.com/groups/vintagepoolparty/pool/

A colour postcard for a motel, perhaps from the 1950s. The sky is blue with white puffy clouds. A lawn leads to a swimming pool with a low motel building beyond rising just for two storeys. A huge sign in Googie architecture style (futuristic, many fonts) rises from the building. "Sands" is in a brown cloud shape. "Motel" is brown but on a square background. "Restaurant" is smaller and on a green sign below that. A cinema style board below states "Now open swimming pool". All the signs are connected by a giant boomerang-style arrow pointing right. A few people are in the pool and a few others are sat on its edges with feet in, while on the lawn area in the foreground a few tables and chairs with large parasols for shade are occupied by women looking on.
An indoor swimming pool on a 1950s postcard. The building has a slightly tapering roof with large support beams running its length. The pool beneath is is a squared dumbbell shape, and cross the thin central area is a small curved bridge. A woman stands on it looking down into the green pool water in which a half dozen people are swimming or standing and talking.
A 1950s postcard showing a large indoor swimming pool. The flat ceiling is a blue and white checkerboard pattern. The area beneath contains a large pool, apparently not very deep as some people are standing up to their waist in water in the centre. Around the pool is a mosaic tiled surface filled with loungers, most of them occupied.
A 1950s colour postcard of a motel swimming pool. A pool, mostly square but with a pointed corner is surrounded on two sides by the three-storey motel complex. It's a bright sunny day and there are a handful of people in the water and a few around its edges on loungers but there's not a lot of space. A flat wall facing us on the left contains a large seahorse design in pink with the words "Pavilion Motor Lodge" next to it.

This week in 1956 — “Never Again” aired on ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS.

#PhyllisThaxter is stellar as an alcoholic in this heartbreaking, Noir-ish episode.

Hitch dispensed w/ the jokes, closing with the hope that the story "will help someone.”

Michael Crighton on how suburban America used to be: "Roslyn was another world. Looking back, it's remarkable what wasn't going on. There was no terror. No fear of children being abused. No fear of random murder. No drug use we knew about. I walked to school. I rode my bike for miles and miles, to the movie on Main Street and piano lessons and the like. Kids had freedom. It wasn't such a dangerous world... We studied our butts off, and we got a tremendously good education there." #USA #1950s

Christmas tree bubble lights were patented in the 1930s, but not available until 1946, due to wartime shortages.

NOMA Electric Company was the first to market them — and made more than 25 million in the first two years!

And the NOMA brand still exists today.

Shiny Brite Co. manufactured glass #Christmas tree ornaments in the U.S. beginning in the late 1930s.

Corning adapted their lightbulb-making process to manufacture the glass balls, which were then decorated by Shiny Brite artists (initially, by hand).

Founder Max Eckardt sold the company at its peak in 1955, when production had reached 1,000 ornaments per minute!

The rotating Color Wheel was the companion to aluminum #Christmas trees in the 1950s and ‘60s.

This version was manufactured by Harmony House and sold at Sears.

“Off-tree" lighting was a must for safety reasons, due to the high conductibility of the aluminum branches.
