Danger Man episode It’s Up to the Lady (1965) was originally entitled ‘The Defector’. Charles, a British civil servant, defects and John Drake follows his wife Paula as she travels to be with him. Drake then tries to get Paula to persuade Charles to go back to England. Paula is played by Sylvia Syms. It’s a great blend of tension and action - with a memorable ending. #DangerMan #theprisoner #1960s #60s #PatrickMcGoohan #TV #television

Just for fun I re-watched the first ever episode of The Champions, 1960s espionage series about three agents who acquire special powers following an air crash in the Himalayas, after they've been stealing bacteria from a secret Chinese laboratory (guarded by a young Bert Kwouk). Clunky in places but still oozes stylish retro glamour. I loved it as a child, and loved the fact that Alexandra Bastedo mixed it as an equal partner with the men (Stuart Damon and William Gaunt).

Columbo

Pilot Episode #1: “Prescription: Murder”. Adapted from a stage play in 1968, the first pilot episode revealed Columbo as a more sartorial, more aggressive character. Columbo’s trademark raincoat was present, although he tended to carry it. When questioning suspects, he sometimes displayed anger. The character was finding his feet. Gene Barry guest-starred in this episode, playing a suitably suave murderer.

I'm seeing some really cool mid-1960s British pop/rock tunes on Masto today, so I thought I'd add one to the mix.

Chris Farlowe has been largely forgotten, but his cover of this Rolling Stones song is an absolute monster. It stayed in the UK charts for 40 weeks.

You can hear Mick Jagger & Keith Richard in the backup chorus. Jimmy Page played acoustic guitar on the session.

Back to some space history neepery, hmm? I've previously spoken of the 1964 World's Fair in New York City as a last gasp of 20th century techno-optimism, and this is a little bit more from it. It's art of the Hall of Science's "movie hall", showing a Martin Marietta station and spaceship. It was printed in the Souvenir Book of the fair.

#WorldsFair #retrofuturism #1960s #space #spacecraft

The top half of this picture shows a lifting-body style spacecraft docking with a cylindrical space station. The station has a radio antenna, three rocket engines at one end, and a US flag painted on the side.

In the lower half we see a large movie screen with people standing underneath it watching a film. The film is showing the same spacecraft rising up from the Earth with a gout of flame behind it. A thin crescent moon is hanging over the edge of the Earth's horizon.
The cover of the "New York's World Fair 1964/1965 Official Souvenir Book". The cover is white (though faded with age) and various rectangular photos showing "cultural things" and rectangles of solid colour in the cover's bottom half. The first image in the toot can be seen at a much smaller size in the lower left.

I guess I started to think I bought it just because it was a cool picture disk but it’s actually got some interesting numbers, pretty much #1960s international cocktail kitch with enough voodoo vibes and vibrato #reverb to warrant a place on the shelf. Can’t find any good YouTube links for this one. 🤷‍♂️

One of many wonderful scenes from The Innocents (1961) and a very good example of the near constant stream of disconcerting imagery employed by Jack Clayton and Freddie Francis. The use of sound here is outstanding. A real sense that there’s a shift in reality, a drop into another world that lays just below the surface.

Not my photos. Obviously.

Fell down an internet rabbit hole and ended up here at the Vintage Pool Party group on Flickr dedicated to vintage swimming pool imagery from the 1930s to 1980s. It's mostly from 50s and 60s American motel postcards and I love this design aesthetic that includes lots of great examples of Googie architecture with its then-futuristic style.

https://www.flickr.com/groups/vintagepoolparty/pool/

#Vintage #SwimmingPool #Googie #Architecture #Postcard #Retro #Nostalgia #1950s #1960s #Style

A colour postcard for a motel, perhaps from the 1950s. The sky is blue with white puffy clouds. A lawn leads to a swimming pool with a low motel building beyond rising just for two storeys. A huge sign in Googie architecture style (futuristic, many fonts) rises from the building. "Sands" is in a brown cloud shape. "Motel" is brown but on a square background. "Restaurant" is smaller and on a green sign below that. A cinema style board below states "Now open swimming pool". All the signs are connected by a giant boomerang-style arrow pointing right. A few people are in the pool and a few others are sat on its edges with feet in, while on the lawn area in the foreground a few tables and chairs with large parasols for shade are occupied by women looking on.
An indoor swimming pool on a 1950s postcard. The building has a slightly tapering roof with large support beams running its length. The pool beneath is is a squared dumbbell shape, and cross the thin central area is a small curved bridge. A woman stands on it looking down into the green pool water in which a half dozen people are swimming or standing and talking.
A 1950s postcard showing a large indoor swimming pool. The flat ceiling is a blue and white checkerboard pattern. The area beneath contains a large pool, apparently not very deep as some people are standing up to their waist in water in the centre. Around the pool is a mosaic tiled surface filled with loungers, most of them occupied.
A 1950s colour postcard of a motel swimming pool. A pool, mostly square but with a pointed corner is surrounded on two sides by the three-storey motel complex. It's a bright sunny day and there are a handful of people in the water and a few around its edges on loungers but there's not a lot of space. A flat wall facing us on the left contains a large seahorse design in pink with the words "Pavilion Motor Lodge" next to it.

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn't get much higher
The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre
Come on, baby, light my 🔥
Come on, baby, light my 🔥
Try to set the night on 🔥

Today, the novel has slipped the surly bonds of earth and punched the face of god (which one? 🤔). I'm so excited for it to be out in the world.

It's Wisconsin without the "ope" kitsch. I hope you'll read it. Available in paperback, ebook, and kobo plus.

This week in 1960 — “40 Detectives Later” aired on ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS.

It was the TV writing debut of the prolific #HenrySlesar, future Emmy winner for THE EDGE OF NIGHT.

#ArthurHiller directed. #JamesFranciscus and #JackWeston star. A delightful piece of #FilmNoir w/ Slesar’s typical twist ending.

Getting acquainted with Andrew Hickey's "A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs" podcast has opened me up to all kinds of surprises, such as the revelation that Shocking Blue's "Venus" was fundamentally built out of a rocked-up reworking of "Oh! Suzanna" that featured #CassElliott on vocals.

Richard Burton diary entry, Monday, May 17, 1965. Written by Elizabeth Taylor.

“I was supposed to do all kind of things today - like buy dresses, clothes and jewels. But we did something else, something more beautiful than anything in the world. My God, it was lovely! Then we talked about all the things we are going to do on our honeymoon - it’s almost five years long now. Better every day!”
