Why is there no ruler in Bambu Studio yet??(unless I’m completely missing it) #3DPrinting
@rasterweb yeah 4 color multicolor prints is cute but not useful.
for me it's all about the multi-material options.
ideally it would be multi-tool head for less waste.
My Solder Board model. White from the Prusa MINI, green from the P1S. Both really good quality, the P1S was definitely faster.

This is a tough one today.... #3dprinting
1) Had a good cup of tea this morning
2) Heated seats in my car are wonderful when my body aches while driving
3) Made an effort to be social in person.
It’s no A-1 Bullseye, but this #3Dprinting deadbolt installation jig might still be interesting to some #locksmith folks: https://www.printables.com/model/596018-locksmith-door-jig-adjustable-width-self-centering
Looks good! Now to try printing my own files… (also, I believe this is the first benchy I have ever printed.)

After 12 years of printing on slower machines, it really does seem like this thing is just gonna shake itself apart. It’s that fast.

Jeff thought my #3DPrinting #Timelapse setup was pretty cool, so he made a video about it!
It's a bit more like an icon than I like but this 1:6 scale 5.25" floppy is still adorbs. Automatic filament changes make it hecking slow at around 20 minutes to print one but if I print a full plate then the filament changes become a smaller percentage of the overall time.
#3DPrinting

With all the drama between #prusa and #bambulabs in the #3dprinting world, I find myself surprisingly siding with Bambu on a lot of the current controversy. I say it's surprising because I'm generally a huge FOSS advocate and really admire Prusa's commitment towards keeping their stuff open source.
That being said, between the makerworld controversy and their past spats about how much of Bambu's success is built on top of the open source work done by Prusa, Prusa is seeming more and more unreasonable in his attitude towards his less FOSS competitors.
First off, for the prusa slicer -> bambuslicer controversy - I don't see what the possible cause for complaint is. Bambu operated well within the confines of the license used by the PrusaSlicer, and credit the Prusa team every time they merge a feature from the Prusa Slicer into BambuStudio. Is Bambu profiting off open source work? Of course, but name me a company who isn't.

The dungeonmaster for one of my D&D games I play in every week asked for a 3D print stand-in for a "box of doom". We settled on this model, so I spent the last 28 hours printing it out of silver PLA.
It looks awesome, and I can't wait to see how the DM paints it to look even better.

I painted a thing.
From here, my brother is going to spray some kinda fixative, then I'll be able to pack it up and send it off to the happy recipient.
I suspect I'd be able to do future items faster and better, but this ain't bad.
Strongly considering making a combo stand / rooster tail for it. Hmmm.
#3DPrinting

#TIL about #PrusaSlicer 's Variable Layer Height feature, the UI is really great too!

The reason I decided to make this little mounting frame was because it took three hours to print the case half and I got the post positions wrong. Instead of re-printing the entire thing I thought I could do a fix that would print fast. Of course it still took an hour. And after I cut the posts off I realized I could have just glued posts in place instead of an entire frame. #3DPrinting

#3dPrinting Before someone says it I really do not care if the company has or has not used that clause in their agreement maliciously. The fact that its there is enough not to trust them.
And even worse for both this infowalled slicer and the slicer that scoops the rights to your work, they have paid versions to make sure the poors can't print with the quality tools. People pay for the privilege to have their work stolen. #3dPrinting
Oh for fucks sake. The other big resin slicer wants an account login to use it. Infowalling your 'free' software makes it NOT FREE. #3dPrinting

This whole Printables MakerWorld drama is pretty silly.

Prusa is being pretty childish here. They've done the same dang things. Is it right to probe your competition like that? I dunno everyone does it and Prusa has the right to block. But complaining and trying to act like its an attack, come on. I appreciate Bambu at least appearing to be open about what they did although Im sus all around.

🚀 sdfCAD is now available on PyPI!
https://pypi.org/project/sdfcad/
With this release I added some more shape inspection routines:
- obj.bounds returns [x,x,y,y,z,z] bounds
- obj.volume() brute-forces the object's volume
Both are still a little wonky, though. Lots of iterative optimization under the hood, that can go wrong...
Still useful to e.g. check programmatically if two shapes intersect. That's something #OpenSCAD can't do. 😉

I also found this interesting site with some useful information about medical #3dPrinting, including a repository of anatomical models (some free, some $$$). Not being familiar with this area, I have no idea how reputable it is but it is a starting point.
From my limited searching, I found this very cool organization called NW Noggin that has a range of brain-related educational activities, including #3dPrinting, #Embroidery, plaster modeling. How cool is that?
See some of the artsier projects on their website under "Make Art":
I have a student looking to print a 3D model of a brain that is already meant to be disassembled/reassembled for educational purposes - in other words, they would like it to be in parts for classroom demonstration. Does anyone have any good leads for such a model?
Well, it's been a year now since I have been sucked into 3d-printing, and yes... it is a "full-grown hobby".

Peopoly announced a new 3D Printer that uses maglev technology instead of rails with belts and stepper motors.
But the real bombshell should be this tiny pseudo-holographic display for previewing the gcode.

It feels like progress is slow, but this guy is so much surface area just base coating him is taking forever.

After a little adjustment, I'm pretty pleased with what I'm seeing come out of this new slicer, Orca. It's a fork of a fork, but it's nice, friendly, fast, and gives good results.
Some oddities on the default setup for my printer, though. The bed temp was waaaay low, the support print speed was lower than normal print, the bridging speed was much higher, and... well, it's better configured now.
#3DPRinting
My new Gunstar has a few hours left.
So this kind of shit is normal huh. Super popular slicer by default just scoops up whatever you do with it and owns it. This also has like three kinds of fonts in it like they copypasted. I dont understand how people put up with any of this, just in principle. #3dPrinting

Printables, Thingiverse, Cults3D, Thangs, MyMiniFactory, Pinshape and now Makerworld (and the hot story)...
And this is to help the customers? Make the 3DP community better?
Unbelievable how this tech moved from an open mindset to "it is mine", "I'll copy everything without credit", "open source but no source".
It is sad...

I printed this spool holder. I had a roller I liked for cardboard spools but I moved my printer and went looking. This one holds the spool a bit higher and has better side-to-side retention on the roller. Recommended if you want some printer bling.

I've been designing this iPhone holder for a friend of mine for a few days using #openscad (or #phpscad - my own translation layer from #php to #openscad). Yes, you're reading it correctly, I've created this in #php.

The plastic waste problem is only going to worsen if everyone adopts multi-color printing, accessible at lower and lower price-points. The filament should be purged into a useful object (or a long 1.75mm diameter cylinder), not into a useless tower or box of squiggles. Let’s work on that! #3dprinting

I just created this shape in maybe 10 mins in #OnShape & I'm a complete newb.
#Tinkercad isn't _just_ training wheels. It makes you feel you _can_ make your idea if you just spend enough time at it. Much like you CAN build a house with Legos if you spend enough time at it.
Trust me when I say you've spent too much time limiting yourself to Legos.
Note that I easily, and precisely defined the size and radius of _everything_ here.
It's a piece to fix something on our bathtub.

Why use coffee grounds as a 3D-printing medium? ‘“I was doing a lot of work in 3D printing, prototyping a lot, and realizing that I was generating buckets of waste for things I didn’t need or couldn’t use or needed to redesign,” he said. He began searching for ways to make the process more sustainable and realized, “We actually waste a lot of the bio-based materials that are naturally biodegradable and compostable.”’

As a #blind GM the bane of my existence when preparing for my #TTRPG of choice is figuring out the #map. Does anyone know of any resources out there that would allow me to take a visual map on a #jPG of #PDF and turn it into a #tactileMap or a #textDescription. I would gladly accept something like #altText but in great detail. I am also open to suggestions for alternative methods. I've run into this with quite a number of games. The part of my "Turbine" loudspeaker no one will ever see. 🤓

Suddenly filament isn't sticking to my bed, anyone able to offer 3D printing advice 🥺
Not changed anything, but suddenly the filament just doesn't stick to the bed at all - had to reduce the printer speed to 20% just to successfully place the first layer, but because it barely sticks it instantly curls up at the edges.
Tried adjusting my Z offset and that's perfect, tried thoroughly cleaning the bed (2x wipes with glass cleaner followed by 2x wipes with isopropyl while wearing gloves), and even cooked the filament (PETG) at 50 degrees for 10 hours and no change :blobcatthink:

Good morning! I am up for Parkrun and also noticing £8.88 PETG filament and trying to decide if I want to risk it because two reviews from a week ago say it’s covered in some kind of clingy film gone wrong that ruins the outer few meters of otherwise good filament… but also £8.88? https://www.amazon.co.uk/GratKit-Printer-Filament-0-03mm-Printing/dp/B0CBJKTYL2

You can tell that #3Dprinting is a hobbyist thing because from what I can gather, most of these printers are made so that they can be upgraded and maintained over time while keeping more or less the same basic hardware/chassis throughout.
Y'know, like how most things *USED* to be and SHOULD be?
Why does having good hardware that can be stretched far beyond its purchase date have to be relegated to nerd and hobbyist product categories? That should just be the standard, right?
@geerlingguy For a moment I mistook it for a gigantic spool of super thick #3dprinting filament 😅
Bambu Lab just announced their latest printer; the A1 mini.
