Standing on a grassy bluff at the south end of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada overlooking the Juan de Fuca Strait ... with Washington State's outline faintly visible in the distance. It's 3 o'clock in the afternoon, but the sun, center stage in the scene, is muted with an overcast haze. This is the photo of a single tigridia pavonia, known here in British Columbia, Canada as tiger flower (also known in Central America as Mexican Shell) is a multilayered blossom. Three strikingly bold yellow outer petals. In the center is a composite of sporadic red dots on pale yellow. I learned this inner part of the flower is the sepal and is seemingly stacked like an origami structure. Certainly unique! And ... it is only in bloom for one day! Catch it early in the day or you miss it! Glad I caught this one!

This is a macro (closeup) image of a large Mophead Hydrangea blossom with its individual petals of varying shades of pink, pale green and tan clearly visible. Each petal is kissed with a touch of pink around or softely woven through it. The faded shades, though beautiful on their own , likely indicate the flowers are stressed due to too much direct sunlight. This flower was originally a deep pink.

Multiple shades of blues from almost purple to the palest of pale blue, these are Lacecap Hydrangeas. These compound flowers are made up of blossom clusters of wee florets that look like a round flat disk edged with larger, showy flowers. The leaves of this bush are a deep, showy green.

Photo from my neighbourhood of a common mallow plant in full bloom. A wild little treasure of a find, usually in disturbed soil, it's considered a weed by many, but is a member of the same family as the hibiscus and the hollyhock. Blooming from spring right thru to autumn, these flowers are bright pink, 5-petalled blossoms with darker pink veins that lead the eye into the dark pink center with its yellow pistil.

The Nootka Rose is a great Pacific Northwest native rose that provides fantastic habitat for wildlife while also providing beauty and even edible uses. Though most frequently seen in and around Victoria, it is also found in wooded areas. The plants can grow up to six feet in height. Flowers appear from May through July. They are pink, about two inches across and with a subtle but sweet smelling scent. Each flower has five petals and five sepals.
