Joining up some barely connected dots: Frankie had some fun merch, which for the inner sleeve/order form of Welcome to the Pleasuredome was modelled by Paul Rutherford of the band, but also by Claudia Brücken of ZTT label mates Propaganda, whose single 'Duel' also crossed my mind as the one you played on repeat. (And I think would be amazing as a #80s Kids cover!)

🎧 In the late 70s-1980, I played a club DJ. When new 12"s arrived from the record pool, I looked for the #SolarRecords label—a meteor on fire, zooming through space, leaving a trail of rainbow. Reliably good.
I didn't know then but do now, #DonCornelius and his #SoulTrain producer, #DickGriffey founded the label and helped make/mainstream acts such as #Shalamar and #Lakeside.

The Jim Carroll Band release their second LP, “Dry Dreams”
It’s got a mostly new lineup of musicians, including the brilliant keyboards of Alan Lanier (Blue Öyster Cult).
But don’t sleep on this one. While it doesn’t have as many memorable, standout songs as “Catholic Boy”, there are some great tunes here, and the overall sound is similar to their debut album.
And once again, we are treated to Carroll's wonderfully evocative lyrics.

NEGAZIONE was a hardcore punk band based in Turin, Italy.
Formed in 1983, they were one of a very few underground bands in all of Italy at the time.
I had a DJ friend in the late 80s turn me on to these guys. He was obsessed with them and would play them all the time.

"How Much More" is my all time favorite Go-Go’s tune. This version, specifically. It’s so raw and energetic. You can hear the band’s early influences like The Ramones, The Ventures, Buzzcocks, etc.
Short, simple, and undeniably good fun. Most of the power is provided by that guitar riff and the huge drums, but really what makes these versions stand out is the joy you can feel the band had in making it. 🤩

Today would have been Robert Moog's birthday, and he is of course the inventor of the incredibly awesome-sounding Moog synthesizer that you'll hear everywhere in rock music.
My introduction to the Moog was in the early 90s, I picked up Gary Numan's brilliant album Telekon in a tiny record store in Maryland when I was a teen. I was hooked. I still listen to it.

My second big Moog exposure was on the album Return of the Rentals by the Rentals, the side project of former Weezer bass player Matt Sharp. ANOTHER great album.

I hadn't heard of cranes til I stumbled across them on Bandcamp the other day. Their new stuff is too light/airy for my tastes, but these Peel Sessions from 1989-1990 that release in a few days-- the two songs up so far.. wow. I LOVE her voice.. the great kinda minimal music behind it, reminds me of Björk a little sometimes, but maybe with SLIGHTLY more edge and more 80s-ish guitar. Fear release their debut album “The Record”
This is classic, original SoCal punk rock. Hard, fast, angry, guitar-centered music featuring puerile, offensive, and humorous lyrics. I still love the opening line from the first track, “Let’s have a war!!! So you can go die!!”. That really sets the satirical tone for the rest of the album. I mean, that’s war, right war cheerleaders?
I also found it really funny how antagonistic this band was to their audience. They loved to talk shit between songs and get the crowd riled up.
“The Record” sets itself apart from other punk recordings of this era, in that the production value was incredibly high for this type of band. It was recorded and engineered at the same studio that Fleetwood Mac was recording at and was given the same attention and technical talent that was given to this major super group.
