'97 Wasn't a ton of piano rock with harmonies in the late 90s. Their first album got quite a bit of attention, particularly the Brick song. I liked most of the other songs on the album a little more personally.

Extremely energetic, noisy Japanese garage rock. They were a short lived band, existing between 1993 and 1996, and known for their fun style of playing with a sense of humor and often incomprehensible English lyrics.
At the time, I hadn’t heard anything quite like this. But from the opening track, I was hooked.

i just remembered one of those #90s and early #2000s things i used to do that is now long forgotten, never experienced by the current generation of teenagers:
whenever friday night rolled around, i'd call my local movie theatre and spend 5 minutes listening to a recorded message listing all of the films playing that night. the recorded voice spoke so fast that you needed to keep a pen and paper nearby to write down prospective times.
or, if i was lucky, someone would have a newspaper i could borrow, and i would thumb through it trying to find the Entertainment section of the paper. Local theatres always put postage stamp-sized ads once a week listing their upcoming movie times for Thursday through the following Wednesday.
there was something extremely tactile, exciting and exploratory about this weekly ritual... like wandering through a video store vs. skimming through netflix categories.

Squirrel Nut Zippers release their second album - “Hot”
I welcomed the swing revival of the 1990s because I’ve always loved the big band sound showcasing lots of cool musical instruments. It’s why I like polka, bluegrass, New Orleans Jazz, and rockabilly too.
Squirrel Nut Zippers had already established themselves as experts in the genre with their debut album the previous year. But “Hot” is their peak, imho. The hit from this album is the wonderfully evocative “Hell”, but there’s so much more here, including beautiful instrumentals, and down-tempo ballads sung with clearly affected vocals.

Sublime release their first LP - “40 Oz To Freedom”
Sublime was basically a SoCal party band from Long Beach. They played a lot, put out a cassette tape, and grew their audience over the coming years. The popularity of this first album grew over time, helped mostly (iirc) the airplay the song “Date Rape” got on KROQ.
I got this in 1994 along with their second album, “Robbin’ The Hood”, and by way of my interest in label mates The Ziggens. The album opens with a sample from The Minutemen’s Double Nickels On The Dime, so right away I knew this was my jam.
I still enjoy Sublime’s blend of ska, reggae, punk, surf rock, and hip hop. It’s often low quality (lyrics, music quality, and even some of the backing vocals), all over the place stylistically, and sloppy.
It's a perfect expression of the old school punk DIY ethos.

The Beastie Boys release their 4th studio album, “Ill Communication”
They’ve still got it! At this point, I kinda assumed the boys would grow stale. Not here. The opening track is a on brand hiphop and still my favorite track from the album. I mean, it starts with the sound of a dog barking “I love you” lol.
More instrumental tracks like they had on “Check Your Head”, plus some old school b-boys punk, groovy, jazzy beats throughout, and more rock-centric songs like Sabotage.
Probably my 3rd favorite album by the band.

I hadn't heard of cranes til I stumbled across them on Bandcamp the other day. Their new stuff is too light/airy for my tastes, but these Peel Sessions from 1989-1990 that release in a few days-- the two songs up so far.. wow. I LOVE her voice.. the great kinda minimal music behind it, reminds me of Björk a little sometimes, but maybe with SLIGHTLY more edge and more 80s-ish guitar. As I was in college a Gainesville herb shop closed. "Thyme in a Bottle" learned puns will only get you so far in business. Garbage bags of herbs were tossed to the curb as their retail space was cleared. This included a large bag of white sage. I carried this bag home late one night as I returned from a show at the Hardback Cafe. That entire summer smelled of white sage. I burned it by handful. Thick clouds of aromatic smoke that set off the fire alarm. With my head spinning and the alarm beeping I felt like a slacker Pagan priest. Now as anyone mentions any new evil I never worry. Growing up in a swamp I found it hard to relate to most 90s sitcoms. Jordan Catalano brooding. Balki Bartokomous. Steve Urkel being allowed to visit at all. None of it made any sense to me. But I still watched. Like they watched Joey McCobb in "Ghost World." Mostly to complain. Now Blossom wore a lot of hats. I didn't mind the hats. Dixie County had its own hat trends. Beaver fedoras out from grandpa's closet. Welding caps. Bush Hog trucker hats. Fancy cowboy hats. My problem was with the crisis created by a school hat ban. Blossom had gone too far. This seemed too unrealistic. Until the Principal banned all hats at Dixie County High School. Just like on Blossom. There was talk of bringing us together. Dissolving cliques.
