I went against convention on a lot. This includes a deconstructivist take on cyberpunk: Not just cause it's cool, but that marginalized folks striving for change is at the core of "punk". The architectural density is not about fear of the unknown but is just how people live: Sometimes hurting others, sometimes uplifting others and healing unevenly.
There are so few games - so few entertainment media - that dare portray an East Asian woman as a frontline activist in a sustained movement. This was a deliberate choice, with overtly Asian & AAPI traumas. We're not your model minority. We're not your cyberpunk doll.
Solace State went against visual novel convention, too. I experimented so much! What I landed on is a visual novel powered by movements that feels like camera drones... which are used IRL by both the establishment & by protesters. So this is a protest game through and through.

I've been really shy about talking about some of the game's progress, but I'm trying to give myself grace that I can only do so much. The game's been about rediscovering myself. I came out right in the thick of development, and I feel like I've finally acknowledged a part of me.
I loved writing Torrent's & Chloe's arcs. I explored their relationships with their families and the values they grew up with and push back on. Torrent, for example, struggles with being cast as the "good son". Their stories are self-assuredly Asian & it let me explore my roots.

Hell in the Pacific (1968) co-starring Lee Marvin

Red Sun (1971) co-starring Charles Bronson.

Unfortunately, there is strong right-wing element in the Asian community which is by & large supported by 1st gen immigrants from Taiwan & China, like Ho who was born in Taiwan.
The right wing tendancies of these people go hand-in-hand w/the authoriartian & demagogic nature of both Taiwan & China and Chinese culture generally . . . as least so it seems from the perspective of this 3rd gen borh American-Chinese. 🤷♂️

Tacoma is most notable to me for the act of racial hatred it committed in 1885, ordering in Sept of that year, that all Chinese to leave the town by Nov 1st and then forcibly removing all of the remaining Chinese on Nov 3 and then burning down the existing Chinese businesses and residences.
There's now a memorial built near the site of the old Chinatown, none exists any longer for obvious reasons, which I onced visited but, if for no other reason, this is one reason why I'd never live there.
PSA: any Asian woman eating at any Korean BBQ spots not in the Richmond in the next couple of days, beware of creeps!

At the same time, I'm also disgusted by the increasing political conservatism of some in the #AAPI movement in San Francisco. People who want to use our pain to advocate for incarceration and punishment and authoritarianism.
It currently feels a little lonely experiencing these things, but I'm trying to build links in radical east bay AAPI activism where I think I'll feel more comforted and more at home (and frankly, less disgusted).
Last night while walking my dog someone asked me if they could ‘cook my dog’ (presumably because I’m Chinese and I cook dogs). And I run into these signs every half a mile or so from Nob Hill to North Beach. Welcome to super anti racist, progressive San Francisco!

I have "Chan is Missing" (1982) on VHS & DVD.
It was produced & directed by Wayne Wang, who also made Dim Sum (1985), which you should see if you liked "Chan is Missing," and who went on to direct some main stream movies -- like "Smoke" (1995) and "Maid in Manhattan" (2002) before retuning to making Asian & Asian American films.
Asian American films have come a long way since then but "Chan is Missing" can be considered the start of a long progression of Asian American films that lead to "The Joy Luck Club" (1993) also produced & directed by Wayne Wang" and more recently "Crazy Rich Asians" (2018), "Everything Everywhere All At Once"(2022) and most recently "Joy Ride" (2023).
The progression from a $20k indie B&W film using nonprofessional actors in "Chan is Missing" to the current high level of the production quality of Asian American films using professional actors over the past 40 years is quite astonishing.
And you must see "Chan is Missing" to see how it all started.
Powerful white people in the U.S. are trying to pit Asians against other races.
They tell us we’re “one of the good ones.” They promise to grant some of the comforts of whiteness, but only if we aid (or remain silent) in their oppression of marginalized people.
This is all an illusion. They will never see us as equals. We will never be them. We can’t afford to become pawns in the game of white supremacy.
