@darioringach This preprint is an excellent read on the #adaptation of the #firing rate of primary #visual #cortex neurons - showing a #powerlaw scaling between the ratio of #probabilities and the ratio of observed firing rates, and also relative invariance of directional scatter (though I am puzzled by the use of cosine similarity instead of more standard distances between distributions...).
An interesting result is that the log firing rate is linearly proportional to the negative surprise of a stimulus, which will certainly bring a smile to proponents of #probabilistic representations in the brain or #predictive processing...
The study extends these observations to more ecological distributions, but - as far as I understand it - still samples individual orientations. One can predict that this would extend to showing textures with different levels of anisotropy (as defined by the tuple $(n_x, n_y)$ in the Ringach, 2002 paper, for example), creating a stimulus set ${ s_i }$ that better covers the space of visual features.

The birds built their nest with my goat's hair, shredded white tarp, and moss. I suspect the moss is both good for having water at the nest, without it soaking the nest. It's thick and holds dew, but very well draining, in rain. They are amazing.

It’s important to remember the broader context in which this is happening. Specifically, the fact that bird populations are declining dramatically. It’s kind of neat to see natural selection in action like this, but it’s important to remember that this isn’t birds “changing their body sizes”, it’s the death or decreased reproductive success of birds that, in this case, are too big, or have wings that are too short.

'Plummeting to ocean depths of 800 meters or more [about 2600 ft], scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) forage and feast on delicacies such as deep-sea squid.' But these are cold-blooded or heterothermic tropical sharks diving down to waters of 5ºC [or 41ºF]. "Some deep-sea fish, such as tuna and lamnid sharks, a family of large and speedy sharks, are partially warm blooded; they can divert body heat to specific organs even in icy temps." But the scalloped hammerhead, named for its rippled crown, lacks such plumbing. If the shark's internal temperature dropped severely, its eyesight + brain function would begin failing, even risking death. Researchers in Hawaii attached a bundle of sensors tracking movement, vigor of tail beats, body orientation, depth and water temperature, as well as the shark’s internal body temperature. The scientists were surprised to find the sharks maintained their body temperature within 0.1°C for the entirety of their dive and most of their way back up to the surface, until the final 300 meters of their ascent, when sharks’ body temperature dipped a mere 2°C, probably as they opened their gills + mouths to begin breathing. The free-dives lasted about 17 minutes. No other deep-diving fish has been shown to manifest this behavior. #sharks #evolution #adaptation

That feeling, when everything is ‘ok’ but your capacity to forecast all the potential disasters originating from this present moment. It feels like this is some primordial adaptive trait that served primitive man well when you had to avoid tigers but in the modern world where the tigers are all served via social media to your very lap it feels like this anxiety only serves to disable and sap your joy instead of equip you for the next challenge. We need new adaptations to the internet jungle predators that threaten our existence, else we will turn into distant, distracted, dull husks of our formerly bright but clueless former selves. #anxiety #adaptation #internet #depression #selfcare
