Bard's new interface tests each chatbot claim by highlighting whether Google search was able to corroborate it. Playing its AI and search capabilities off each other is a clever business move by Google, but it's also an opportunity for students to understand that factoids fabricated by chatbots are different than citations found on the web.

Luke Munn writes about the uselessness and dangerousness of AI ethics: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s43681-022-00209-w

Focusing on ethical principles takes resources away from useful work, he says. There are two kinds of useful work: narrower work on auditing and governance, and broader work on social justice.

Interestingly, the narrower and broader work are similar to the "easy" and "hard" AI governance problems we identified: https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/10103193

Which do we need more direly:
- Knowledge about generative AI’s ethical consequences, harms, risks etc. or
- Knowledge about how AI ethics principles might need to be updated and revised?

What to do about AI in academia?

1. Nothing. Industry will welcome this.

2. Ban. Academia has been shocked and the use of tools goes against the principle that the work must be yours. Regard use as equivalent to plagiarism.

3. Moderate. Allowed if the instructor permits it. Bans don't handle the issues or educate about risks of using AI tools. Can we instead persuade users why these tools won't help them learn or produce good content?

UNESCO, EU, etc., say a human perspective must be central to the regulation of AI. Tools do not have personalities or personhood. Few countries have AI regulation or laws; the EU has been held up by lobbying.

LLMs may be biased due to biased training materials, but inexperienced users may not be aware of these biases, errors, or 'hallucinations'. The output may only present one view, but science needs to assess multiple views and varied information.

We don't know the source of the concepts outputted by LLMs, but in academia we need to attribute ideas and use citations.

#PUBMET2023 #AIwriting #AIethics #Education

UKRIO

This is problematic for scientific research and writing, because uncritical use is dangerous. Creates fake science, from which there may be no return. Human faking already exists, but at a less scale.

The black box problem is that we can't explain exactly how LLMs work because they use billions of parameters, nor can we reproduce outputs.

To regulate the use of AI, Ivana Kunda says new laws and regulations will lag behind. We can instead apply old principles to the new technology. 🧵

AI 'intelligence' in large language models is very different to human intelligence. It shuffles words around to create new sentences by guesswork, without knowledge of the meaning (a 'stochastic parrot'). It may sound sophisticated, but be totally wrong or invented.

The year is 2035. At PRIMA, short for "Prognostic Intelligent Medical Algorithms in Seattle, all is well in the hospital. Or is it? PRIMA is the foremost in diagnosis and prognosis. According to the algorithm, all patients who are accepted to the program will survive their illness. But, sometimes, patients fail the algorithm. They're "non-responders" to the precision care offered by PRIMA. The protagonist of the book, Dr. Hope Kestrel, is dealing with one of those non-responders. Such is the setup for The Algorithm Will See You Now, a fast-paced speculative thriller that explores the use of AI in health care. Dr. Hope Kestrel, the protagonist, holds the position of High Resident (what would be called the Chief Resident in any other hospital). Rather than a yearly position, her position is constantly fluctuating , depending on the points awarded or removed by the Online Speech and Language Recognition system (OSLR). As such, her career nemesis, Dr. Leach, finds every opportunity to make her look bad so that he can replace her as High Resident. Medical technology has come a long way by 2035, as diagnosis and treatment is performed at PRIMA entirely with AI and a voice-powered chart assistant called Osler.
