#API
Juli.

The #reddit hashtag is hilarious. There I am trying to read about the clusterfuck of a decision to close the #api and kill third-party apps and subsequently the best and brightest shutting down and every other post is beautiful #boobs. While the world needs more people, I'm still morally opposed to stealing people's #nudes.
Do you use Reddit? I do and I use an app called Boost because the native app is so poor. It's not accessible and it's not nearly as customizable. Check this post and make your voice heard. They're following Twitter's lead and making the API prohibitively expensive to kill them off.
Don't Let Reddit Kill 3rd Party Apps! https://www.reddit.com/r/Save3rdPartyApps/comments/13yh0jf/dont_let_reddit_kill_3rd_party_apps/
It's not just Apollo for Reddit shutting down at the end of the month, it's also Sync for Reddit shutting down.

Not surprising at all. I really hope these developers decide to do something with Lemmy and make Lemmy the next big thing!
Reddit's recent changes to how it will be charging for use of its API by third party applications has resulted in widespread backlash, and Reddit is Fun is the latest app to announce closure. #Reddit #API #ThirdPartyApp https://www.neowin.net/news/following-in-apollos-footsteps-reddit-is-fun-will-be-shutting-down-on-june-30/

Android Authority: Reddit protest to start June 12 to support third-party apps https://www.androidauthority.com/reddit-protest-2023-3331857/
>On June 12, a massive Reddit protest will begin. Lasting a planned 48 hours, the protest will involve dozens of subreddits going dark.

It's impossible to wrap an RSA key with another RSA key using the #web #Crypto #api. Proof and examples are included. #javascript
So naturally, just like most servives started to copy the #TwitterBlue subscription model, for stupid paid verifications, which failed in similar fashions, i.e., the recent #Gmail fiasco #Reddit has now decided to increase their #API costs and also basically block third-party apps for their services. Just like Twitter.
If only we had a service. Which was free. With API access. Various verification methods. Always-on and free API practices. Multiple apps for many different users and their needs.
Join the blackout on 12th to 14th June on Reddit by rather hanging around here.
Damn.
So I don't know who follows the #reddit drama, but the company is killing its #API ahead of its IPO (OMG).
There are probably a few million people who primarily interact with the content through 3rd party apps, websites, and tools. A large number of those are power users and #mods. Over the next month, it is likely that we will see a big influx of new #users #migrating from reddit as they lose access to the features they depend on.
I'm fairly active over there, but I'm not sure what we can do to help people #onboard.
If you are new from reddit, or just exploring feel free to ask me any questions

Just thinking back to 2016 when r/thedonald was constantly making its way to the top of reddit for years and none of the team at reddit did anything.
Now with these API changes and devs/users making posts actively complaining about what a bad choice it is and how folks are planning to leave reddit en-masse, you barely hear about them despite the threads being heavily upvoted (usually up to something like 100k+ upvotes - usually 3k is enough to get a thread to the frontpage).
I look back on that shitshow in 2016 with even more pennies dropping.

interesting move by #Brave in releasing an #API for their #SearchEngine with an emphasis on it's use in training #AI. I expect this to be a controversial move, imho, it rubs a bit against the grain of the #privacy / #security centric ethos of the Brave ecosystem.

@jannem By charging more than it costs them, ie making a profit, on #api access, it seems the companies are building walls around their data.
They are afraid of third party developers circumventing the #advertising they run.
But in the long run it also hurts them, because having that data be a fortress on the hill with tollbooths on the way, less people are going to go there.
Their play is to stay giants.
”F**k the i#nternet, we are it”, is what they are essentially saying.
As to paying for API access:
I do think it’s fair for companies like #reddit and #twitter to get their money back on what it costs them to provide access to their data. They normally monetize that when you access it through their own app.
But how much is appropriate? This is still data they didn’t create. The users created this data and to have it locked behind paywalls is morally questionable.
It also hurts the network effect, because links to that data become costly.
As a long time #Apollo user this makes me sad.
“Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing. Bad news for third-party apps, their announced pricing is close to Twitter's pricing, and Apollo would have to pay Reddit $20 million per year to keep running as-is.”

Looks like #Reddit is going to pull a #Twitter and price their #API usage is impracticable and using it as a round about way to kill off 3rd party clients.
Post from Apollo's dev (3rd party iOS Reddit client) about the pricing and how it'll cost them about US$20 million a year to keep the app running with current user usage rates.

Last week Adobe released a new cloud-based "Auto-Tag" API (Application Programming Interface) for developers. Somewhat buried in the limited media coverage of the API are two interesting items:
1. Adobe plans to include this cloud-based Auto-Tag in their free Acrobat Reader this fall.
2. There's a free demo (requires Adobe account registration):

In this case, the apps use the #Mastodon #Client #API.
This is more or less also adapted by other #Fediverse #software.
It's documented in an open way, but is not really an open standard.
Regarding the open standard #ActivityPub, the server-to-server part is used, but not the client-to-server part.
