“The team unexpectedly found the 5.5-foot-long (1.7 meters) carved stone while doing a geophysical survey in Aberlemno, a village with Pictish roots. The stone has several geometric shapes showing abstract Pictish symbols, such as triple ovals, a comb and mirror, a crescent and double discs. There is a push for more environmental activism. It is the end of 'Oil Week' in the city, and unusually warm for this time of year!

One of the interesting things about Fittie is that it was essentially a housing estate for fishermen evicted from pockraw by harbour expansion (porca quay basically).
Historically fittie would be nearer to the castlegate, with a small piece of the fittie port (some iron bars sticking out a wall) still visible round the back of the Carlton Bar.
Maybe you know this already, but I didn't until taking a tour by Dr Fiona-Jane Brown a year or two ago

Rhynie Man, an amazing cartoon-like Pictish carving on a 1.78m high stone dating back 1200-1500 years. I’ve never gone out intentionally to photograph #butterflies but I’ve been so happy to see so many about on my walks along the river here in #Aberdeen.
So now I’ve got something else I can try to photo and it’s a fun new challenge.

Today I'd like to share another photo - one taken last week at Newburgh Beach in #Aberdeen
The beach sits on the edge of a #nature reserve and is home to a range of nesting birds as well as seals🦭
It was here that I was able to get this shot of an #Eider duck flying through the air, shortly after taking off. Everything lined up perfectly and it's quickly become one of my favourite #bird in flight photos🦆
Flying birds are difficult to capture on my camera (#FZ330) which is one of the reasons I'm looking to upgrade it. However, it's still pretty amazing that a relatively old and cheap bridge #camera (relative to mirrorless/DSLRs) can capture such good detail!
On my explorations, I often only see lone eider ducks but at Newburgh there is a breeding colony which meant there were hundreds! It was the first time that I've heard their strange sounding #birdsong but one I can't wait to hear again.
Unfortunately, eider numbers are starting to decline in the UK and they are on the Amber list for Birds of #Conservation Concern. Threats include nest predation, habitat degradation, disease outbreaks and the impacts of #climatechange.
To help protect nesting eider's it's important to not disturb their nests. If you come across one, stay away, keep dogs on leads and try to help notify others to give the birds the best chance to survive and thrive 💚
Well that's a bit of family history disappearing into the mists of time.
Northfield Church was where @coffeestayne attended youth clubs, it was also where my granda was the beadle/caretaker of the church for decades. I remember helping by putting out the bibles when I visited as a 7 year old.
It's kinda sad Community Centres (which is part of what that church was) being bulldozed for more houses with little community facilities.
