They say you must use university affiliated email as your corresponding email when you publish you paper, otherwise your paper looks fake and illegitimate.

And when you publish your paper with university email, you get spammed left right center by scammy or totally irrelevant journals and conference you get sick of checking work emails 💀

How many "compromises around the edges" are ok to get a paper published? And what does it mean for all of us that so many researchers are "inclined to spin their findings in order to advance their private goals"?

A really interesting read from Benjamin Mazer:

I might need some feedback with this. I'm computing the wave envelope of a variable (a value for each longitude; a sample in the first image) and then computing the correlation of the envelope with the amplitude of each wavenumber (result in second image). Does this make any sense? I'm kind of trying to see which regions "contribute" to each wavenumber.

#Datadon #RStats #AcademicChatter @rstats

A figure with 6 panels. Longitude in the x axis and "hgt_z" in the y axis. Each panel is a different month and show a different wavy line centred at zero.
A figure with four panels, one for each wavenunmber 1 through 4. Longitude is in the x axis and "cor" in the y axis. Each panel shows a wavy line. For wavenumber 1 is more or less constant around 0.4. For wavenumber 2, it's zero and even negative between 0º and 60ºE and between 60ºW and 180º and around 0.25 in the rest of the domain. For wavenumber 3 it's around 2.5 with dips to zero near 60ºE and 120ºW. For wavenumber 4 it's pretty low except around 120ºW and 0ª where it's around 2.5

Does anyone else find that the well-meaning trend in seminar of “first question from a student” tends not to succeed?

My proposal: THIRD question must be from a student.

Students usually need time to process the talk and build up the courage/conviction to ask it. And once faculty get the ball rolling it feels easier to raise your hand. I think it’s on hosts to check the vibe partway through and explicitly ask for students to talk, but at the start never seems to work well.

I'm seeing suggestions for students to cite "AI" when they use it. I'm having trouble envisioning this. Not the format of the citation, but the context. What is the value of teaching *students* to cite an algorithm's string of words if the very use of AI in professional work is not acceptable?

Are there any examples of published *professional* (not student) writing where AI output is cited...but not writing which is *about* AI and its output.

"The Journal of Controversial Ideas offers a forum for careful, rigorous, unpolemical discussion of issues that are widely considered controversial, in the sense that certain views about them might be regarded by many people as morally, socially, or ideologically objectionable or offensive."

Synopsis: Read about the ethics of autonomous vehicles, and the freely available short story *Car Wars* by Cory Doctorow, to consider how the fictionalized (but very plausible) stories of emergent human-technology interactions surrounding self-driving cars can be seen as object lessons about practical and ethical behaviors.
1. Read the concerns of technology ethicist Cory Doctorow regarding self- driving cars. Technology. https:/www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/dec/23/the-problem-with-self- driving-cars-who-controls-the-code & 2. Listen to Doctorow’s *Car Wars* short story audiobook with animations (recommended that you consume the story this way) * Best version - https:/boingboing.net/2016/12/21/free-audiobook-of-car- wars-my.html & « OR https:/www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CNeaQS7kMQ (copy/paste link; not activated here to prevent YouTube player on page) « Backup, original story text (if you need to ctrl-f and clarify anything in the text) © https:/web.archive.org/web/20190213075619/https: //this.deakin.edu.au/self-improvement/car-wars = 3. With your group, create answers to some topical questions as new posts into the class discussion forum. Your particular answers are assigned by last name: 1. Group Google Docs here [LINK] & 1. Add your name to the table on page 1 2. During the movie, take notes in your area related to answering your questions 3. After the movie, work with your group to answer the questions on page 2

The most overlooked technology for teaching (if you're on Microsoft for email) is mail merge. I have emailed every one of my students a personalized check in for the start of the semester. It took me about 10 minutes total. This is particularly helpful for people who use #AlternativeGrading #AcademicChatter

90% of the time I need to prepare a talk is spent making little animations to show stuff I could probably explain in 1 minute (like the one below, which took way to long to make).
I think I need help 😞
#AcademicChatter

A green cylinder intersecting with a grey plane. The plane rotates back and forth round the vertical axis, so the intersection between the two (highlighted in red) moves continuously from being a circle to being an ellipsis.

Hi! Do I know anyone here that #teaches Intro to #Archives #classes?

If so, would you be willing to chat about the books (if any) you assign? I need to rethink my books
