Serious question for the #mastoratti..

Is there a difference between #chatGPT making up academic papers and attributing them to made up #academics and #hottakes on #socialMedia that have #noContext and even less evidence?

Hey folks - there's a 4-part #podcast coming exploring the impact of #Section28 in the UK:

https://www.bristol247.com/lgbtq/news-lgbtq/exploring-the-impact-of-section-28/

My other half & I were part of one of Tom Marshman's workshops, and went to see the resulting interpretative theatre performance here in #bristol

It'll be really interesting to see how it's all come together, especially with the input of various #academics from Bristol #University.

Building on that boost of @BethanyBlack .

Took Economics at A-level, aced the course. Surprised my teachers by not pursuing it at uni.

In part because I could already see - just from the first year of the course - how economics was a pisspoor model of human behaviour.

Nothing has changed in the years since.

"The following review of the archeological and document evidence indicates that three events occurring in the first half of the first millennium BC trigger the emergence of a specialized and integrated classical economy after 500 BC: (i) growth in demand for silver as a medium of exchange in economies in the Near East; (ii) technical breakthroughs in hull construction and sailing rig in merchant shipping of the late Bronze Age; (iii) perfection of ferrous metallurgy into the European hinterland."

Strange that lots of #academics on #bsky are not really engaging with anyone, except perhaps with few other academics and they just reposting their original twitter material. Huge majority anglo-american. Probably some of them are on #threads too.

Not sure what the actual point of such activity is all about though

By the way I'm just doing a bit of looking into bsky, once I finish that I'll be off!

I just sent in my dissertation. It is finally all out of my control. I have worked so hard on this. No matter what happens, I am confident in the work I've submitted. I feel good enough to send this in and let what will be, be.
Academia has been stressful to a degree I never believed possible. I got through it despite every single setback I've faced, and there have been too many of them to count.
I can get up from this desk now and look into my future. I'm not quite bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, but I can walk away and say: "I've done it. It's over."
Nobody can take that away from me.
I don't know that every tear was worth it. I don't know that every night I stayed up working into the wee hours, or every very early morning start has been repaid. What I do know, is that this is the end of a very long, very difficult chapter. I know it wasn't normal. I know it wasn't what it arguably should have been. And i know that - no matter what happens now - i am so proud of the lessons I have learnt, the skills I've developed and the things, both small and great, I've been able to achieve.
So here's to the future. To travel and messy sleep schedules. To catching up on the reading challenge that is nowhere close to complete. Here's to new challenges and more difficult days ahead. Here's to brighter eyes, and bushier tails, and getting to write another chapter, and then yet another of my own story. Here's to me. I've earned it.

Many years ago, I attended a conference on "software #agents" organized by #academics, with a focus on Python implementation.

Their pitch was basically "see, your agent collects information and from that decides where it should go next. Then it gets pickled and sent to those destinations, which unpickle it..."

Besides the obvious, gaping #security #hole this represents, it also fundamentally misunderstood pickle. You can't unpickle an instance if you don't have the class's #code.

I've been busy (in a good way) working on my classes, so I haven't sent out the #lawfedi bat signal in a bit.

We have a number of projects operating on the #fediverse for #law and #legal professionals or #academics.

First and foremost there is this #Mastodon instance (esq.social) which is always open and taking new members.

For the rest, check https://lawfedi.org for a pretty good sense of where you can find "the conversation" in the broader fediverse.

Tanguy Fardet

Because of this, I am quite sad to see many #academics moving to #Bluesky.

Contrary to the Fediverse, that platform is not a common.
It's the property of a for-profit private company and though it is supposed to be a "public benefit" LLC, what that implies about how the platform will evolve remains to be seen (and will be for the state of Delaware to decide).

I don't think that helping Bluesky grow its invite-only network benefits the common good, nor the academic community as a whole.

One of the key areas where the commercialisation of the #university sector might be seen, has been in the rise of the university #spinout - the commercialisation of research conducted by #academics, spun out into SMEs (often with retained part-ownership for researchers & the university).

So, interestingly having reached a peak in 2021 there has been a recent decline... the Q. is whether this is a blip, or represents a shift in the willingness to invest in uni-based innovation?

Chart: Equity investment in UK university spinouts.

Amount raise has risen from less than £0.5bn in 2013 to a peak of £2.5bn in 2021, before dipping down last year & this; this is reflected in the number of deals concluded with has risen from around 200 a year in 2013, to a peak of 400 in 2022 & then dropped into this year.

I am not Teams fluent, but I understand deeply how hardware, file systems, and networks function so I can seem passingly competent.

Thanks!

I hope more #researchers and #academics will join the exodus to #Mastodon. Sigmoid.social in particular is an instance for folks interested in #AI, #MachineLearning, #Neuroscience, #CognitiveScience or any other relevant disciplines to congregate and mingle.

Another question for tenure-track or tenured #Academics:

Did you choose this job mostly for the teaching aspect? The research aspect? Or both?
