Serious question for the #mastoratti..
Is there a difference between #chatGPT making up academic papers and attributing them to made up #academics and #hottakes on #socialMedia that have #noContext and even less evidence?
I just started a #newsletter for forcing myself to read more papers. Please, fellow #academics help me, the more subscribers I have, the more likely it is that I stick to a good #reading habit.
Hey folks - there's a 4-part #podcast coming exploring the impact of #Section28 in the UK:

My other half & I were part of one of Tom Marshman's workshops, and went to see the resulting interpretative theatre performance here in #bristol
It'll be really interesting to see how it's all come together, especially with the input of various #academics from Bristol #University.

Building on that boost of @BethanyBlack .
Took Economics at A-level, aced the course. Surprised my teachers by not pursuing it at uni.
In part because I could already see - just from the first year of the course - how economics was a pisspoor model of human behaviour.
Nothing has changed in the years since.

"The following review of the archeological and document evidence indicates that three events occurring in the first half of the first millennium BC trigger the emergence of a specialized and integrated classical economy after 500 BC: (i) growth in demand for silver as a medium of exchange in economies in the Near East; (ii) technical breakthroughs in hull construction and sailing rig in merchant shipping of the late Bronze Age; (iii) perfection of ferrous metallurgy into the European hinterland."

Strange that lots of #academics on #bsky are not really engaging with anyone, except perhaps with few other academics and they just reposting their original twitter material. Huge majority anglo-american. Probably some of them are on #threads too.
Not sure what the actual point of such activity is all about though

I just sent in my dissertation. It is finally all out of my control. I have worked so hard on this. No matter what happens, I am confident in the work I've submitted. I feel good enough to send this in and let what will be, be.
Academia has been stressful to a degree I never believed possible. I got through it despite every single setback I've faced, and there have been too many of them to count.
I can get up from this desk now and look into my future. I'm not quite bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, but I can walk away and say: "I've done it. It's over."
Nobody can take that away from me.
I don't know that every tear was worth it. I don't know that every night I stayed up working into the wee hours, or every very early morning start has been repaid. What I do know, is that this is the end of a very long, very difficult chapter. I know it wasn't normal. I know it wasn't what it arguably should have been. And i know that - no matter what happens now - i am so proud of the lessons I have learnt, the skills I've developed and the things, both small and great, I've been able to achieve.
So here's to the future. To travel and messy sleep schedules. To catching up on the reading challenge that is nowhere close to complete. Here's to new challenges and more difficult days ahead. Here's to brighter eyes, and bushier tails, and getting to write another chapter, and then yet another of my own story. Here's to me. I've earned it.
Many years ago, I attended a conference on "software #agents" organized by #academics, with a focus on Python implementation.
Their pitch was basically "see, your agent collects information and from that decides where it should go next. Then it gets pickled and sent to those destinations, which unpickle it..."
Besides the obvious, gaping #security #hole this represents, it also fundamentally misunderstood pickle. You can't unpickle an instance if you don't have the class's #code.
Dr. Bryan L Mesmer, #AssociateProfessor & #researcher at #UniversityOfAlabama in #Huntsvilleโs #CollegeOfEngineering, will be teaming up w/ #academics, other researchers & #postgraduate #science & #technology #students from 4 countries on a $1.26 million project supported by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (#NATO) Science for #Peace & #Security (#SPS) Programme to develop pioneering #solutions for #DisasterRelief using multi-agent #drone systems.
Waiting for #academics on #Twitter to finally leave, but also watching them do the mental arithmetic to decide if leaving is worth the hit to their public image of being highly tied into the academic online culture. ๐ฅด

Crowdsourcing some #research help here: does anyone have access to a library or database that has the Archaeoastronomy journal?
Can anyone please give me advice on where to find reliable citations other than "Cite this for me"?
Sometimes, I'm not sure what I'm working with and it makes it difficult for me to cite something. I'm not planning to use the citation as is, just want the information.
Maybe this is me being silly, but often the documents don't have all the information I need.
I've been busy (in a good way) working on my classes, so I haven't sent out the #lawfedi bat signal in a bit.
We have a number of projects operating on the #fediverse for #law and #legal professionals or #academics.
First and foremost there is this #Mastodon instance (esq.social) which is always open and taking new members.
For the rest, check https://lawfedi.org for a pretty good sense of where you can find "the conversation" in the broader fediverse.
Because of this, I am quite sad to see many #academics moving to #Bluesky.
Contrary to the Fediverse, that platform is not a common.
It's the property of a for-profit private company and though it is supposed to be a "public benefit" LLC, what that implies about how the platform will evolve remains to be seen (and will be for the state of Delaware to decide).
I don't think that helping Bluesky grow its invite-only network benefits the common good, nor the academic community as a whole.
