Just hoping this game eventually gets a digital release so one doesn't have to resort to the usual alternative methods and hassle to play it on a modern system.

It's no coincidence that so many people speak so highly of the game and so many newer adventure games have drawn at least some inspiration from Discworld Noir, and considering it's been around 24 years since its release, the game still holds up significantly well.

at least once a year i go back to a criminally underappreciated #adventuregame that was originally built for the #amiga and received an incredible PC port

DreamWeb is, to my knowledge, the only adventure game to use this particular perspective. it is a fascinating game engine - pixel-perfect non-tile-based interface with object-oriented design

the atmosphere and animations are top notch, along with a setting that is equal parts Blade Runner and Se7en.

i grieve that we never received any more games like this from Creative Reality, who went on to produce Martian Gothic Unification for the PSX years later.

The refresher dialogue you get in 'Return to Monkey Island' when coming back to the game after a couple of days of not playing, asking if you remember where you left off and giving you the option to get a brief reminder of the story so far and your current objectives, or just get right back into the game, is such a neat feature. More games should be doing this, please.

🧵 [1/2] here's a little dorky #adventuregame coming of age failure story from 31 years ago

when i was 15 years old, my mom took me to a local canadian pharmacy chain called London Drugs on a school day for a medication pickup. i was broke, but she told me i could pick up a magazine or a book to read on the ride home.

of course, i went straight to the game bargain bin and started digging through their pile of $15 CD-ROMs, mostly consisting of clip art and shareware compilations.

to my amazement, there was a #sierra on-line adventure game in there. this *never* happened. sierra games were always sold at a premium, and rarely ended up in the shovelware bin.

i snatched up The Adventures of Willy Beamish, which i recognized from the sierra catalogue, and headed to the checkout line with my mom.

the cashier was a beautiful teenaged girl, a couple of years older than me. as she rang through the prescriptions and various groceries my mother had picked up, my mom piped up, 'What did you find back there? You were supposed to pick a magazine!'

she snatched the jewel case out of my hands and handed it to the cashier. 'Oh, I'll buy it for you.'

The casher smiled at me kindly, "Oh cool. I didn't know we sold CDs. What band?"

I barely stammered out "Uh it's uhhh.."

My mom cut in, laughing. "It's not a CD. It's a GAME. MY SON, YOU ARE SUCH A NERD!"

The cashier bit her lip and smiled.

This was too much. I yelped out a "MAWMMM!" and grabbed the grocery bags and ran for the door.

it only took me 30 years, but i finally found an IBM PC jr, complete with a monitor, chiclet keyboard, non-goofy keyboard, and joystick!

spent the morning cleaning it up, and it booted up this original King's Quest diskette like it was new.

what a true pleasure it is to finally see the first #sierra 3D graphical #adventuregame played on the original hardware.

on the chiclet keyboard you can see the "overlay" that Sierra included with the game, to make the command and hotkeys set easy to understand.

(for you PC jr geeks, this is the 128Kb version. the sidecars included are a 128Kb RAM expansion, and a parallel port!)

A short video of an IBM PC jr booting up, then accessing a diskette and loading the King's Quest title screen. It plays a short trumpet fanfare, then loads the game. The game begins with Grahame of Daventry in front of the castle with an alligator in the moat. Grahame walks east into a pond, and drowns in 3 feet of water. Game over!

I haven't yet finished playing #VirtuaVerse, but an #Amiga 500 #demo is integral to the plot, and I don't think any more needs to be said. Play it in the classic mode, not the new "story mode". You'll probably need a walkthrough to get through some parts, but the puzzles are a lot of fun.
