I realize their is so much doomism now and defeatist when it comes to climate activism.

I am nonetheless creating a new activist platform with developers in Kenya and Nigeria etc. Super motivated guys.

Cancel doom and gloom?

Maybe not.

I find writers like Umair Haque on Medium extremely helpful in sketching out the problem.

I want to work on the solution.

A big El Niño is looming. Here’s what it means for our weather.

How warm water in the Pacific shapes storms, droughts, and record heat around the world.

By Umair Irfan May 30, 2023

"El Niño is the warm phase of the Pacific Ocean’s temperature cycle, and this year’s El Niño is poised to be a big one, sending shock waves into #weather patterns around the world. It’s likely to set new heat records, energize #rainfall in #SouthAmerica, fuel #drought in #Africa, and disrupt the global economy. It may already have helped fuel early-season #heatwaves in #Asia this year.

"'A warming El Niño is expected to develop in the coming months and this will combine with human-induced climate change to push global temperatures into uncharted territory,' said Petteri Taalas, secretary-general of the World Meteorological Organization, in a statement earlier this month. 'This will have far-reaching repercussions for health, food security, water management and the #environment. We need to be prepared.'"

For most of us in the Global North, climate change might be an inconvenience... less rain than we'd like, or maybe more rain than we need, a few unexpectedly hot days, some random cold days...

It can be a bother, and if we're aware of what's really happening, it can also be worrisome, though mostly in an abstract way.

But for much of the Global South, there's nothing abstract about the climate crisis. It's right here and right now.
______________________________

Communities in the Horn of Africa are suffering the impacts of five consecutive poor rainy seasons. This drought has surpassed previous horrific events in 2010-2011 and 2016-2017 in both duration and severity, leaving large swathes of Somalia, southern and south-eastern Ethiopia, and northern and eastern Kenya facing the most prolonged drought on record in the Horn of Africa.

Over 13.2 million livestock — which pastoralist families rely upon for sustenance and livelihoods — have already died across the region. This translates to the loss of more than 180 million litres of milk since the drought began, leaving over 1.4 million children under age 5 across the region without a daily glass of milk, with severe consequences for their nutrition.

Across the Horn of Africa, the drought has driven alarming levels of malnutrition for children and women, threatening their lives and their futures. More than 4.3 million children are expected to be acutely malnourished.
______________________________

Africa is being pummelled by the existing, ongoing, increasing climate emergency, as are large parts of Asia...
______________________________

Countries across Asia have been hit by another round of extreme heat that has toppled seasonal temperature records throughout the region, raising concerns about their ability to adapt to a rapidly changing climate.

After punishing heat waves struck large parts of the continent in April, temperatures spiked again in late May, normally the start of the cooler monsoon season.

The heat wave in Vietnam, expected to last well into June, has already forced authorities to turn off street lights and ration electricity as air conditioning demand threatened to overwhelm the power grid.

Heat waves rolling through parts of eastern and southern China are set to continue, as climate and weather experts warn that hot weather globally is projected to become “more extreme”.

Last week, Shanghai recorded its hottest May day in 100 years as the mercury soared to 36.7°C, surpassing the previous temperature by a full degree.

Swathes of southern China are expected to endure temperatures of more than 35°C in the next week, with temperatures in some areas exceeding 40°C, forecasters have predicted.

"We can't say that these are events that we need to get used to, and adapt to, and mitigate against, because they are only going to get worse as climate change progresses," said Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick, a climate scientist with the University of New South Wales in Australia.
______________________________

These conditions are only going to get *worse* as the climate crisis progresses.

We are in an emergency, right here and right now. Our house is on fire. Maybe it's time we started doing something!

In the photo is a spoon with kola nut, which is native to West Africa. We call it “bissy” in Jamaica. It saved my life when I was a teenager.

A flatlay on a light-brown, wooden surface of Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor in the centre between a partially visible glass mug with yellow and red flowers lying on one side in the top left-hand corner, and a spoon with loose kola nut (aka bissy in Jamaica) on a white, lace-edged, paper doily in the lower right-hand corner. Some of the bissy is scattered on the doily.

The book cover design features the image of a young, barefoot Black woman gazing at a red, desert landscape with mustard-coloured hills in the distance. Her thick dreadlocks are in a ponytail, and she’s wearing a thin, dark-grey wrap dress and a six-ringed armlet on her left arm. Her exposed back is to the viewer, and the shadow-like wings of a vulture hover in front of her as if they’re a part of her body. A white-hot sun blazes above her head, so close that it seems she could touch it. Knowing what the protagonist's powers are like, she probably could!

In Yoruba folklore, the Tortoise, who is called Àjàpá, Ìjàpá, & Alájàpá, is depicted as a trickster whose popularity equals Anansi’s. The Yoruba esteem his cunning, “which makes up for his physical disadvantages”, as celebrated in the proverb “Àjàpá ò lẹ́sẹ̀ ńlẹ̀, ó lọ́gbọ́n ńnú (Àjàpá’s feet make hardly an impression on the ground, but he is all wisdom inside).”

He holds a pair of drum sticks that have long handles and are bent in the middle at about a 45 degree angle, so that the shorter portion of its "L"-shape is what strikes the heads of the drums they are used with. He stands behind two large wooden drums, which are set in front of a 1920s-era phonograph recorder, its large conical sound absorber less than half a meter in front of the drum heads.
