I was wondering how the stock market is handling the announcement of Hawaiian being bought out by Alaska Airlines.
People holding Alaska shares (NYSE: ALK) are being hit with a significant -14.31% drop, while the big winners are those holding Hawaiian shares (NASDAQ: HA), which is up a staggaring +192.59% today.

The European Commission has asked airlines to standardise their luggage sizes in order to make things simpler for travellers.
Earlier this year, the European Parliament asked for a standardisation of airlines' carry-on luggage rules. But instead of proposing measures, the Commission said it prefers to let the industry come up with the rules itself.

Frommer's writer Jason Cochran says that airlines "obtain competitive advantages by pretending flights are cheaper than they actually are" — a practice known as "drip pricing." Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. was confirmed by the U.S. Senate today as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. President Joe Biden nominated him four months ago but something called a “Tuberville" was holding the confirmation hostage playing political games.
I was lucky enough to interview General Brown for Flying Magazine (not on Mastodon) a few months back:
More on pricing:
After a pub chain introduced 'dynamic' or 'surge' pricing to raise margins at times of peak demand, the FT expects this to become more common as more firms adopt yield management pricing already adopted by #airlines & for concert tickets.
The key problem for users of dynamic pricing is their customers' perceptions of #fairness.
Although a staple of critical political economy, mainstream #economics has a blindspot on fairness, which may cost these firms more than they think!
Interestingly the Dept. of Business has just launched a consultation on various pricing manipulations including 'drip pricing' - you'll have encountered the slow accumulation of extra charges as you near a final purchase (the #airlines are particularly prone to this, with all sorts of extra charges for things one might have thought were included)... see section 4 of this document - whizz to P.40 to see how you can submit your views.

When will #airlines & #airports do something about the awful conditions they have created for travellers? It is so bad now that I don't travel as much as I would have in the past because the prospect of going through the airports then sitting on a cramped airplane for hours is enough to deter me. Because of where I live, I generally have to change aircraft en route resulting in day long travel discomfort. I know I'm not alone in my distaste for airline travel. #AirCanada #WestJet

Bie it noted that the New York Times will stand on its head, chew gum, and dance all at once if Republican managers tell it to accomplish that feat.
And it will show no shame at all for its disgraceful performance.
James Fallows focuses on a recent New York Times article reporting that airline close calls are more frequent than we realize.
A big problem is overworked air-traffic controllers, a problem stemming from Reagan's firing of thousands of those folks, an event the Times chooses — curiously — to call Reagan's "replacing" of them.
Ronald Reagan broke the Air Traffic Controllers' union. It looks as though the piper must finally be paid.

Follows detailed analyses of many domestic and int'l routes. A must-read.
"#Airlines pay no taxes on kerosene and little #tax on tickets or VAT.
