Figured if I'm going to have an old-school blog then it should probably have some kind of content, so I wrote some words about Atari, Lllamasoft and Akka Arrh: http://washingupsoftwareprojects.com/blog/2023/9/8/games-i-love--akka-arrh.html
Déjà disponible sur PS4 et Switch, la version boîte sur #PS5 de 𝐀𝐊𝐊𝐀 𝐀𝐑𝐑𝐇 (shoot arcade) sort le 23 Octobre.
Sitting here, in the Year of Our Lord Two-Thousand-And-Twenty-Three, enjoying the fact that I now get to follow one of my childhood heroes, Jeff FREAKING Minter, as he heads to a Curry House for some Indian nosh to kick-start the weekend.
This deserves some kind of meta-galactic dimension-hopping ruminant HERD-WAVE(!!!) by way of celebration:

Finally got around to a game of #AkkaArrh. Takes a bit of getting used to (I keep forgetting the left stick controls a cursor, not the rotation of your doodad) and it’s very Every Extend Extra (which I love). Much less frenetic than #SpaceGiraffe. Definitely worth getting if you’re into “more complex than usual” turret defence games.
(I would like a mode where the stick controls rotation though - I think it’d be a nice “easy mode” version for people to get into the game. Assuming I haven’t missed this in the options already…)
Just realized that I'm not really using the "shooty cursor" powerup to its full potential and have been just trying to pick off the enemy shots from the turret rather than sending the cursor out there to clean up swarms of them. That should help, though it does come with its own risks when you have to bring it back for a quick turnaround.
I haven't tried mouse controls yet. I wonder i that would make rapid movements easier?
My only real complaint is with those little bastard bullets that fly off the screen, turn around, and fly back again at speed. Unless you spot them being launched and deal with them quickly it's very easy for them to take you by surprise in a way that can feel a bit unfair. There is an audio cue when they turn around, but it's easy for that to get lost in the din - and it is a glorious din that deserves to be turned up if you can.
I think Akka Arrh might prove to be my favourite Llamasoft game.
So much more than the twitchy arcade blaster that it might seem from the trailer, it's a game that demands accuracy and a careful rationing of your weaponry, closer perhaps to Missile Command than anything else.
This doesn't make it chore to play though, as the right shot in the right place at the right time can set off gorgeously satisfying chain reactions.

Broke through the level 14 wall I had hit and quickly moved up another 10 levels. Loving this game so much! #AkkaArrh
Heh. I decided to try Hard Mode in #AkkaArrh. I breezed through the first twelve levels and was thinking “What’s so hard about this?” Then I reached level 13 and everything very quickly fell apart. Wow. Fun though.
#Atari is reviving #AkkaArrh, a 1982 #arcade game canceled because test audiences found it too difficult. The remake will be released on #PC, #PS5 and #PS4, #XboxSeries X/S, #NintendoSwitch and #AtariVCS in early 2023. https://www.engadget.com/akka-arrh-remake-jeff-minter-atari-200603455.html?src=rss #VideoGames #GamingHistory
