Torn between their love for their children and the desperate need for deliverance, the villagers hesitated. Until one fateful day, a young woman of extraordinary bravery stepped forward. Holding her newborn child in her arms, she offered her precious gift to the sorcerer, willing to surrender her own flesh and blood to save her village.
Yet, as the sorcerer prepared to accept her sacrifice, a revelation pierced the air like a clarion call. With a voice trembling with determination, the young woman declared her own truth—a truth that would change the course of destiny. She revealed that she was the firstborn of her parents, destined to be offered to the Manowick.
A collective gasp swept through the villagers, their eyes wide with astonishment. The young woman's sacrifice took on a profound meaning. In an act of immeasurable love and unyielding bravery, she shattered the chains of fate that bound her village. With unwavering resolve, she amended her offer, placing her own life on the altar of salvation.
The sorcerer, moved by the young woman's profound sacrifice, accepted her selfless choice. He performed the ancient ritual, harnessing the forces of magic to break the Manowick's hold on the village. As the final incantation fell from his lips, the foul creature dissipated into the night, its malevolence extinguished forever.

In a village nestled among ancient woods, where whispers of forgotten sorrows lingered in the wind, a dark tale took root—the legend of the Manowick.
Long ago, during a time of despair and affliction, a dreadful plague swept through the land, claiming countless lives and leaving behind anguished souls.
Legend had it that the pit where the afflicted were buried became a breeding ground for vengeful spirits, merging into a grotesque entity known as the Manowick. Born from the twisted remnants of once-forgotten souls, it sought to unleash its wrath upon the living by poisoning their precious water.
As the Manowick haunted the village, its wicked presence weighed heavily on the hearts of the villagers. Desperation consumed them, and they turned to a renowned sorcerer, known for his mastery over the supernatural, seeking aid in their plight.
With ancient texts and forbidden rituals, the sorcerer delved deep into the secrets of the Manowick. He discovered that the creature's spell could be broken, but the price for liberation was grave indeed. It demanded the sacrifice of a firstborn—the innocent life to free the tormented.

I took a lunch break in the middle of a scene I was writing, thinking I have a good place to continue, and now I have no idea where I was going with this. 😩

I must add that Leda's real name is Laodamia, but she shortens it to Leda because you can imagine her name isn't really a thankful one to pronounce.
But she also doesn't have any personality resemblance to her mythological tragic queen namesake. Her name really is random, and I just assessed whether the sound of the name suited her, not the meaning.
Side characters do have meaningful names though 🫣

Icarius was a given for a name. It stuck with me after I saw someone use it, while he meant Icarus. Now, I don't like to be on the nose and I liked the sound of the name, but given how I came across it, it does fit because he did fly too close to the sun. BUT then I decided to look up the name Icarius itself and found that it was the name of a man doomed to be murdered for the secrets Dionysus shared with him, and that fits so well too.

You people must have already noticed I have a penchant for names from greek mythology. Leda... has no personality match with her mythological namesake. She'd probably stab swan Zeus before he could force himself upon her.

I'm dragging my feet finishing a novel. First 92k words? No problem. Last 8 or 10k words? Sisyphean. It's probably because I know the hard part will start afterwards: Editing; sitting down with the many architectural components I've built and saying 'ok, how do I make the best building out of this? And what's more important? Function? Aesthetics? Atmosphere & mood?'

Has anyone ever used an online #Fantasy name generator for names in a novel?
I admit I have a few times. I have 280 named characters (most NPCs 🙂) in the Nifaran Chronicles, and all the names were starting to blend.

I usually get first names from that place inside where my characters talk to me. As the story and characters develop I sometimes have to change them if they no longer resonate.
Surnames are trickier and I root around the internet for something that fits.
Ellis was always Ellis. His surname is Lyall which is a Scottish name stemming from the Old Norse Liulfr, meaning “wolf.”

My MC’s name is quite old-fashioned, as is his sister’s. They’re family names though, as is fairly traditional especially in the north (three in four generations on my dad’s side are called William, for example).
As an aside, one of the peripheral characters is called Schofield, and was based on an old school friend. One of only two I invited to my 18th birthday party at my house. I found out last month he had died. I’m glad his name and a humorous bit of his life story will last through my WIP.
SO CLOSE to sending Nanna’s memoir to print. Should we start a poll for how many typos I’ll miss?

Tango Night in Buenos Aires.
When we were in Buenos Aires we got the chance to take some tango lessons and then visit a milonga to watch some social tango. The lighting in the milonga was almost as dramatic as the tango itself.

For me it's been a lot of slimming to get to the action faster, and then a new opening scene that shows off my main character a little more.

#WritersOfMastodon, do you ever have a character just pop into your head? I've had Saoirenadh the Mad God rattling around in my skull for a few weeks now.
In the beginning was nothing, and then there was Saoirenadh - but there had always been a Saoirenadh and always would be. They cleaved themself in two, one half becoming the heavens, the other - still Saoirenadh. And so on, and so on...
Now they wander themself, an insane (?) mohawked vagrant, subtly influencing themself...
Renewing my plea for @Obsidian to make “Auto pair brackets" and “Autopair quotation marks" two separate settings in the Editor preferences pane.
I love auto-paired brackets, which has to be turned on in order to highlight words, type brackets, and have them transform into links.
But when writing #fiction, auto-paired quotes make me crazy -- especially since apostrophes are also auto-paired.
I’d love to have auto-paired brackets without auto-paired quotes.

Looking at #SanFrancisco maps, and checking my old Dreamwidth stuff, looking for:
Where are the places my characters might hang out? Where are places I want to promote?
And seeing so many places that have gone out of business. It hurts.
I need to write about the place that *is*, not the place that was, the place that's in my memories. But remembering stuff that's gone hurts, and so does feeling how much I and SF are separating, and that separation just keeps growing. #writing #AmWriting
(Been writing all day so most of what I saw was words on a screen, but still, saw a few things)
Things I saw today:
A pied kingfisher doing a rapid grooming routine: Right wing, left wing, right side of head, left side of head, beak wipe right, beak wipe left, shake out the butt feathers. (The butt feather shake looked very satisfying)
A pied kingfisher (different one) jumping off a pole straight into the water, emerging with a small fish, dropping the fish very deliberately, immediately diving and catching it again, and dropping it back into the water again. Poor fish! Or lucky fish?
A caterpillar munching on an aloe flower, and a few florets down on the same flower, a bee, packing her pockets full of dark orange pollen.
A single goose keeping watch on the roof of the flats opposite my house. In the rain, all heroic and misty.

Hullo friends, I got a job this last week! Thus ends 2 years of being a full time houseparent and an eager entry back into the work force for me.
I'll continue to write but I think a lot slower than presently, and I'm already slower than many other Indy writers (and not the ones putting out ai generated books).
Writers, how often do you start another project in the middle of 2 others? I have full life 3 I'm writing, and a ghost writing job, but having gotten the job I felt so excited I started a new fantasy story I've been trying (very hard) not to work on.
In regards to those titles you "won't work on", I personalty find it easier to slide only half way down a slippery dip.
Readers, how hard do you find it to read only 1 book at a time? I know for some (most?) that's the standard, but I just cannot. I'll keep it to 3ish (currently Dracula, Dragonlance 1 and Andujar, the Gentleman Robot), but I'm interested because I know I'm not the only one.
