Did you know that there were artificially mummified bodies ~2k yrs before the #Ancient #Egypt?

In Northern #Chile, the Chinchorro people started mummifying their weakest: Children, babies, & the elderly.

Occuring after 5000 BCE, corpses were stripped of flesh & filled with fibre & clay.

These are the oldest examples of deliberate mummification.

That they mummified irrespective of social status is wholly unique.

PS: The Chinchorro #diet was 90% #seafood.

#history #ancienthistory #mummy

This is a photo of a Chinchorro mummy.

It shows the face and the upper torso of a child.
We see a dark grey clay mask, with a discernible nose, mouth, and closed eyes. There is a wig of human hair, in a dark brown colour on its head. The hair is parted in the middle and quite thick.

The bit of torso we can see is clad in a dark, earth-stained tunic. It covers everything including the neck. The fabric looks coarse.

The mummy lies on grey sand.
This is another photo of a Chinchorro mummy.

It shows a corpse sitting with its legs drawn close to its body and its hands folded over its knees.

The mummy is covered in red ochre. The skin around its face is dry and thin, we see the face in profile so it's unclear how well the features are preserved.

We do see that the jaw shows nicely preserved teeth.

The fingers, including the fingernails, are also well preserved.

The mummy wears pants & some kind of garment on top, but it is not clear due to the age & red colouring.

Long, dark sandy hair falls over its shoulders.

The background is a wooden bookshelf with old-looking books. (Probably a museum)

I don’t normally boost posts where the picture has no Alt Text description, but this sounds fascinating. For the benefit of screen reader users, I scanned the photo with the Beta version of Be My AI. It took a while to process, but it gave the following description:

The picture shows an ancient wooden boat displayed inside a modern building. The boat is long and narrow, with a series of wooden benches running along its length. It appears to be very old and weathered, with a rustic appearance. The boat is displayed on a glass surface, and there are people walking around and observing it. The building has a bright and spacious interior with a high ceiling and large windows that allow natural light to flood in. There are also some people walking in the background, giving a sense of scale to the boat.

We’re fascinated and horrified by death as a species.

In Ancient Rome citizen-fathers had a legal commitment to care for and command their sons and daughters for life. Their children by law had to do as they were told by the father.

But if a newborn was not healthy or deformed the father had the duty of lifelong care or execution of his own child.

Seems like the Romans already had a solution to the Trolley Problem.

Funerary relief of Hadirat Katthina, daughter of Sha'ad ~ 200–220 CE

The funerary portrait of Hadirat Katthina is an example of high relief from Palmyra. She shows a sense of dignity from her gaze to her formal pose with her arms crossing her body and concealed for the most part beneath her garment.

The inscription is in Palmyrene Aramaic: “hdrt kṭtyn’ bt š‘d ḥbl.” "Hadirat Katthina (?) daughter of Sha‘ad, alas!". Translation by Professor Jean-Baptiste Yon, University of Lyon.

Getty Museum, no. 2019.12

#AncientHistory #ReliefWednesday #Palmyra @antiquidons @histodons

Description from the museum: “She faces forward, eyes open and alert, with incised eyebrows, irises, and pupils. Her oval face, turned slightly to her left, has a thin nose with wide nostrils, small mouth with full, closed lips, and dimpled chin. A long veil with scalloped upper edges covers most of her head along with a tightly bound “turban” with a central loop, but her long, thick hair nonetheless flows out from a central part in abundant waves. She wears a light, long-sleeved tunic and pulls a heavier fringed mantle tightly around her. Her right hand protrudes from her garment and her elongated fingers grasp its edge in a gesture associated with the virtue of modesty in ancient Roman funerary reliefs. Her lowered left arm crosses her body diagonally and the hand, with fingers extended, rests below her right elbow. Her long neck, with the pronounced fleshy folds conventionally called “Venus rings” by scholars of ancient art, is adorned by a beaded necklace, and she also wears pendant earrings and a jeweled ring on the now-broken little finger of her left hand. There are also slight losses to her right little finger and the tip of her nose.”

This is a carbonized loaf of bread from Pompeii, 79 C.E. - preserved for thousands of years in the volcanic ashes of Mount Vesuvius. The baker left his stamp, which reads: “Celer, slave of Quintus Granius Verus." Celer is known to have survived the eruption, as his name later appears on a list of "freed men." Most bread at the time was baked in community ovens, so customized stamps were used to mark individual families’ and bakeries’ loaves.
