I love how #Android does such an awful job preventing you from breaking your system. Some system apps can be uninstalled just like that. Others can only be uninstalled from the Play Store. Others require you to disable the app before it lets you uninstall them, reinstalling them otherwise. The entire system feels very clunky and not reassuring at all. But one thing is certain: I'm having fun seeing how much stuff can be removed before things break (on my 6 year old spare phone 😝).
So if you recall one of my previous posts, I said I would switch phones, since the one I was using was on its last legs.
Well I'm glad to say I've been using a #OnePlus Nord CE 2 Lite 5G for 2 months, and what a phone! Here are some of my highlights:
- Amazing phone construction and design
- Buttery smooth with its 120Hz display, I can't go back to a 60Hz screen again
- #OxygenOS 13 is quite a lovely #Android experience
- Camera(s) are superb
- 5G is pretty neat, but I noticed that it drains the battery ever so slightly more
- Battery holds up for a full day without even caring about it; 33W charging is quite a novelty to me, I still get amazed at the speed it charges even today
While I could have gotten this year's CE 3 Lite 5G, I looked up the spec sheet and it was essentially the same exact phone, albeit with a better camera and faster charging, if memory serves, costing around 300€. And since I got it for around 200€ at a discount, I couldn't say no to this one.

When setting a timer with #Siri or #GoogleAssistant, on your #smartphone, #HomePod, or Google #Nest device, there is no need to use the phrase “set a timer for…” Just invoke your digital assistant and tell it the number of minutes or seconds you want:
“Hey Siri, 2 minutes,” or just hold down the side button on your #iPhone and say “two minutes.”
The same applies to #Google Assistant. “Hey Google, 30 seconds.”

Some time ago I bought a #shiftphone #SHIFT6mq.
After following this https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/SHIFT_SHIFT6mq_(shift-axolotl) wiki and a lot of experimenting, I've installed #postmarketOS with #sxmo in "slot a" and #android ShiftOS-G in "slot b". This way I can dual-boot between #postmarketOS and #android. At the moment this solution isn't perfect, but I'm really amazed by the work that has been done to document this. A big thanks to everyone whos has worked on this :-)

I think I am done for today.
What works:
- Select a message to forward
- Select the chat to forward to
- Allow only a single group or 1:1 chat, no broadcast lists
- Ask the user whether they are sure if they really want to forward the message
- Send out the message:
- Plain Text (+ markdown)
- Location
- V-Card (contact)
ToDo:
- Send image, video, audio file, audio recording, any other attachment
- Show in the chat bubble that it is a forwarded message
Also done today:
- Select existing broadcast list for incoming share on iOS/Android
- Refactor some code to remove duplicates
- Cleanup some other code.
I think this is really good for the first day after being away for ten days. Especially because I also did a lot of code-/merge-request reviews today for my second client (Typescript). So, yeah, it was a good day and I am tired (and yes, I really liked how I looked this morning 😁)

... oh, am I curious about what #Apple's gonna announce this evening? You bet! But not on the hardware side, rather on the software side: let's see what is new in iOS, macOS, and so on.
there are some easy ways #Android #screenreaders could be way faster but developers aren't doing it for some reason. For example when you single tap somewhere on the screen to find out what's there, all the current Android screen readers wait a bit to see if you'll tap again so that they would instead register adouble tap. After that time passes and you don't tap again, only then it'll actually say what's under your finger. Problem is, that wait time is pretty long - humans can double tap way faster than that! If they add an option to make that time shorter, it'd speed things up a ton.
And that's just one way. Now that we got multi-finger gestures, if they ditched diagonal gestures it'd also boost performance. That's because without diagonal gestures, as soon as you swipe enough for it to count as a swipe, it will register a swipe at that direction and immediately perform the action bound to that gesture without waiting until you lift your finger to see if you'll change directions for a diagonal swipe. They could have this as a toggle too, so people who want diagonal swipes could still get them, but it'd be optional instead of mandatory.
I would really like to be able to contribute the changes like that but unfortunately I know nothing about native Android development. #accessibility #blind

Today I’ll try implementing the now agreed-upon “Forward Message” feature for #Ginlo / #Cicero / #Ginlo_II.
The problem with “Forward Message” is similar to the “Quote Toot” here on Fedi: you don’t want to offer a feature that could be misused to harass or fire-up people. You just want to have a feature that people can use to communicate with each other respectfully.
Yes, I know, I am only the creator of a tool and I am not responsible for how the tool is used. But, hey, if I *can* create the tool in a way that misusing it to harm someone is really difficult, then I should. At least, that’s *my* way of thinking.

Developing a Plugin for Android Studio
Day 3 of running #CalyxOS on my phone and notwithstanding any unforeseen problems, I'm probably going to keep it for the foreseeable future. It's more responsive, has much less built-in spyware, all of my regular #Android apps work properly (I was able to find the issue with my Samsung Smart Things app) and even has a few extra additions, like the ability to force Hotspot clients through my VPN connection. After my test driving, my wife has decided to take the plunge as well.

So Apollo Podcasts App for iOS & Android has nothing but #AudioFiction but I encourage you to give it a try. Link at end, but I would also like to caution that if you do use a screen reader, the app is not screen reader friendly on iOS. It can be used if you are patient and willing to work through the barriers but I’m trying to start a dialogue with them about accessible design. @AppleVis it sounds like, possibly for the time being having two phones would be ideal. One android one iOS. You don't really need to have both phones hooked up on a carrier. You could just use one of the phones with Wi-Fi. #Accessibility. #a11y #iOS #Android
Finally I got a good catch on just how wack AI language model hallucinations can get and how believable they'll seem to folks who don't know any better.
I asked #chatGPT to list some third party #screenreaders for #Android besides the default one. If you know anything about screen readers, you'll be like "Hell naw!" when you see the model's output.

@ryanhoulihan Apple is a corporation trying to make money. Any companies that size will have some pros and many cons. If you are in position to choose, everyone should go with the HW & SW you enjoy and are comfortable with. I use #MacOS, #IOS and #Linux for those reasons. I have very little knowledge of #Windows or #Android these days and now not much interest in either platform.
Apple’s privacy stance is better than much of the competition. I am relieved to have almost entirely de-googled my life. In some cases swapping for an Apple service or othertimes for an #opensource equivalent.
Being a fanboy of a financial services company and boosting their credit card would seem a step to far though.

Are there any non root Android apps or tools to figure what app scheduled a pending alarm?
On my phone I see alarm icons in the status bar, possibly scheduled at odd times by some astronomy or space app as reminders of celestial events. Yet nothing relevant shows up in their settings. And the alarms never fire.
