Leaving #AotearoaNZ now. I love this place so much, it's always hard to leave! 😭 But I'll be back again someday to properly tour the South Island (maybe March 2025?).

Wellington is a great city, so much stuff to do and cool things to see and so many cafes and restaurants to eat at! My Airbnb was great too (it's called "the Coast is Clear", nice little standalone flat in a duplex). And I met some very fun and cool people while I was here too. #NewZealand

So alas, back to the hum and drum now (though at least I have a day off on Monday after I get back). But there are some big changes coming... ;)

Meet my new flatmate.
Found this black shag (we think) waddling along the road looking a bit lost / unwell. We thought it best to bring it home and look after it for the night.
We call him/her Pingu (or sometimes Dodo - yes he has 2 names despite only being named about an hour ago).
He has fishy stuff and water and a comfy bed made up in a huge cage.
So everyone please send Pingu your best wishes for good health, hopefully he's all good after a warm snooze.

The Camphor Laurel (Cinnamomum Camphora) is a large handsome tree from China and Japan. The wood is dense and highly scented like the leaves. It has become invasive in many warmer pacific counties, but is still planted as an amenity tree. It has been used for making storage chests as it repels bugs. Too much exposure to the scent is not good for you. They can live over 1,000 yrs. This specimen is on an old military base in Tāmaki Makaurau. #thicktrunkthursday #AotearoaNZ #smallstories #trees

For invasive species, it's often tempting to explain their dominance over native species by describing their unstoppable combination of super-competitive traits. However, in cases like the house sparrows of Ōtautahi-Christchurch in NZ, their dominance in the city is clearly a result of how much people have modified the landscapes away from the the forests that used to be here. House sparrows suck at living in NZ forest.
#AotearoaNZ #Birds #Forest #HouseSparrow

Jon Sullivan

The house sparrow is a world famous #InvasiveSpecies. It's almost everywhere there are people, and houses. Smart for their size and with a wide diet, they're good breeders and work together in groups. Yet, they can't figure out living in NZ native forest.
Here are all the house sparrows I saw & heard in 2022 on my standard runs through Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ. They're abundant everywhere in the built city, but scarce in the wildlands of the Port Hills.

It's not like the city planners chose to have forest in the Cashmere hills and not in Hoon Hay. If the Cashmere hills were flat, they would have open English-style parks just like Hoon Hay. Gardens in the Cashmere hills are filled with forest birds, and Hoon Hay gardens are not, because a lot of the Cashmere hills is too steep to keep as open lawned parks. Most parks of Ōtautahi-Christchurch don't need to remain open and English and exotic.

Here's a reminder of how important city trees, in dense patches, are for birds. It's maps of the neighbourhood we used to live in, where we live now, and why we moved. These are two parts of my standard run routes through Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ, both at the same scale. Each week I run through one or the other map, where I count and map every bird I see and hear. Here are just the forest-loving birds in 2022, and look at the stark difference!
#AotearoaNZ #Birds #Forest #UrbanTrees

A view of two very different public parks from Ōtautahi-Christchurch city, NZ. On the left is an open park with lawn and a few scattered oaks and sycamores. It is open and exotic and forest birds do not live here, nor in the neighbouring gardens. The other park is Cracroft Caverns Reserve, and it is dense wild forest, a mix of exotic and native trees on land too steep to easily lawn. This is where forest birds live.
A map of Ōtautah-Christchurch, NZ, showing dots on the maps of forest bird species I saw and heard in 2022 on my regular runs. The map has boxes around parts of the suburbs of Hoon Hay and Cashmere, which are shown in more detail in the other maps. There are LOTS of points on the map in Cashmere and hardly any in Hoon Hay. A note on the map mentions that both areas have lots of pet cats, and Cashmere probably has more rats (both are big predators of birds), but Cashmere also has a lot more trees in dense patches, where forest birds can feed and hide.
The birds mapped are piwakawaka-fantails, riroriro-grey warblers, kēreru (all endemic and green points), harriers, kingfishers, and shining cuckoos (all blue points, non-endemic natives), and all chaffinches (orange, exotic).
(I skipped korimako-bellbirds, as they roam more widely at some times of the year when the trees they like are in flower.)
A map of part of the hills of the suburb of Cashmere in Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ, showing points for the forest birds I saw and heard throughout 2022 on my standard runs. There are lots of points all over the map. Cracroft Caverns is highlighted, which is the forested reserve I showed on the photograph.
A map of part of the suburb of Hoon Hay in Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ, showing points for the forest birds I saw and heard throughout 2022 on my standard runs. Gainsborough park in the centre. I ran through it 26 times in 2022, and only made one observation of any of these forest birds. A note on the map concludes that "tidy open suburbs and parks are awful habitat for forest birds".
The birds mapped are piwakawaka-fantails, riroriro-grey warblers, kēreru (all endemic and green points), harriers, kingfishers, and shining cuckoos (all blue points, non-endemic natives), and all chaffinches (orange, exotic).

This pattern underscores how there is a lot more to ecological restoration than just planting the right plants in the right places. All the insects and fungi and other species associated with these plants in wildlands don't just magically show up overnight. It can be decades before they establish at plantings, and these are the species that feed the lizards and birds and make wild ecosystems work well. Remaking functional wild habitats is hard and takes time.

Here are some of the patterns in my biodiversity run from this afternoon. The maps show some of the bird species. As usual, the flat suburbs of Ōtautahi-Christchurch are a native bird desert (Why? No native forest+lots of cats).
I count and map all birds, all butterflies, all wild mammals, all larger mushrooms, the flowering and fruiting states of various plants, and a monthly selection of early incursion weeds (and a few other things).
#WildCounts #EcologicalMonitoring #Biodiversity #AotearoaNZ

A map of observations from my run today through Ōtautahi Christchurch, showing all the native NZ forest birds. There are kererū, piwakawaka (fantails), riroriro (grey warblers), and korimako (bellbirds). Kererū and korimako were only in the Cashmere hills. Rirorio were only in the Cashmere hills and the planted native trees around the Wigram retention basin. Piwakawaka were in the Cashmere hills and the Wigram retention basin and a few in the native trees planted in Centennial Park. Not a native forest single bird was in a suburban garden on the flat.
A map of observations from my run today through Ōtautahi Christchurch, showing a selection of exotic birds. There are starlings, house sparrows, blackbirds, and song thrushes, all species purposefully introduced from Europe by European settlers. These birds dominate the city's birds.
