Some quick #Bywgraffiadur browsing of the digital holdings of the #NationalLibraryWales and I stumble over a short appreciative bio of my fellow-#German, Prof Hermann Ethé. He was a leading scholar of #MiddleEast languages and manuscripts, most prominently in #Arabic, #Persian and #Turkish, and came to #Aberystwyth, #Wales, to teach German alongside the languages of his actual area of expertise. Within a few weeks of the outbreak of #WWI he was chased out of town by an anti-German mob and died in Bristol in 1917 mostly of a broken heart of having been treated so shamefully. The uni, to their credit, always stood by him and undertook countless appeals to the UK government to gain a pension for Ethé.
We still need to write up his biography in the Dictionary.

The text "Alfiyya" by Ibn Malik is a rhyming book on #Arabic grammar. Originally intended for beginner students, it is still studied to this day, with numerous commentaries.
The author, commonly known as Ibn Malik, was a Andalusian (Modern day Spain) linguistic who lived in the 1200s.

The book Avurumiyyah is a great primer too, but it was written for Arabic-speaking people. It is concise at 30 pages. I recommend reading it after doing a primer in English.
@pfriedma This is an exceedingly common and hilarious problem.
From a tech perspective, I'm surprised its still an issue in 2023.
I'm not a native #Arabic speaker, but I would find this difficult to read. Why? Because there are certain patterns of words that visually get broken up. (kinda like how no one reads every letter, but it becomes an image you can spot)
In #Arabic, if two synonyms are used apart, they mean the same thing.
And if they are brought together, their shades of meanings are emphasized.
I recently saw this in الظن (al-dhann) and التخمين (al-takhmeen), the former means speculation and the latter means conjecture.
@pfriedma omg yeah. It's often insulting. This issue could be solved solely by Adobe including RTL support in all their product versions, but for some reason, their text tool still does not support RTL in 2023, and you'd have to use a separate RTL text tool, which is only available in MENA versions, to type in Arabic. Come on Adobe, text editors figured this out in '98!
I see this pretty often. My insurance occasionally sends me my bill with a fact sheet that's in "multiple languages" but Urdu, Arabic, and Farsi are all typeset backwards. Is this just a thing that #arabic speakers get used to?

The two big fields of the #Arabic language are:
* Sarf - Word morphology/patterns. The English equivalence of this would be how the versions of Run, Ran, Runner, Runnng, etc.
* Nahwa - Arabic Grammar
The 3rd field of study is called Balagha (rhetoric)
To make clear:
أَوْضَحَ - He made clear
يُوْضِحَ - He makes clear
إِيْضاح - Making clear

While there are multiple modern dialects of #Arabic, similar to English dialects, most people write and can converse in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA).
MSA is a simplified version of Classical Arabic.
And all dialects are ultimately evolutions of classical Arabic.
One of my classmates graduated from his studies program and is now in Egypt to study Arabic full time.
Recently I received an e-mail with pictures which touched me, and which showed me how important it is to think about diversity when creating illustrations.
The photos were taken in a school at a hospital run by an international medical organisation that operates in the Middle East and showed children reading the #Arabic translation of Ada & #Zangemann - A Tale of Software, Skateboards, and Raspberry Ice Cream.
Here my blog entry about it:

I wish Duolingo would give us a break with the inductive learning sometimes and just *explain stuff*. Arabic is so different from English, and it would spare me a lot of unnecessary mental effort to just have the grammar and syntax explained, especially since there's no teacher to go to with questions on an app.
How does one transliterate a hard G in Levantine? I know some words use ك but sometimes that sound doesn't feel like the best fit. I also know Egyptian uses ج but don't think Levantine does in that regard?

Okay, wow, I found a place where the #medieval #Syriac author Ishaq #Shbadnaya misinterpreted the dictionary of Bar Bahlul.
Shbadnaya uses the term Peutah (ܦܘܛܗ), which he glosses as "Matthew the Evangelist." The relationship between the two was opaque even after I looked up the entry in Bar Bahlul's dictionary (pictured).
In 1901 Robert Payne-Smith published a Syriac lexicon, based in part on Bar Bahlul's dictionary. Payne-Smith helpfully identified Greek words for as many of Bar Bahlul's entries as he could. Payne-Smith's entry is pictured as well.
So Bar Bahlul included the Greek word πότε in his dictionary, defined correctly as "when?" But Shbadnaya incorrectly interpreted the question "when?" as the name Matthew (one letter off in #Syriac, the exact same letters in #Arabic), and specified that he meant Matthew the Evangelist...
A misunderstanding over five hundred years ago.

On that note: Do people with a native language that reads right-to-left like #Arabic, #Japanese or #Chinese actually find #FunctionalProgramming languages like :haskell: #Haskell easier to read? 🤔
to add on to this list (and article), it is good to read this article written in 2009 by Shaykh Husain Kadodia (from South Africa), explaining what the state of commercial publishing was like with regards to Islamic texts, their verification and the cutting of corners:
It is for this reason that I disagree with those who say copyright is not applicable in Islamic law (based on this blatant plagiarism).

#I18n note: #Arabic has weird rules when it comes to counting things, which I haven't seen implemented properly often (or rather, I notice it more starkly when it's wrong than right). The rules are:
1: Use the singular form of the noun. The number can be added as an adjective after the noun for emphasis, but never write it in numerical form.
Correct:
مرة
مرة واحدة
Incorrect:
1 مرة
مرة 1
2: Similar to 1, use the dual form of the noun which encodes the number in it. The number can be added as an adjective after the noun for emphasis, but never write it in numerical form.
Correct:
مرتان / مرتين
مرتان اثنتان / مرتين اثنتين
Incorrect:
2 مرة
2 مرتين
مرتين 2
3-10: use the plural form of the noun. It's ok to use numerical forms from this point onwards.
Correct:
3 مرات
ثلاث مرات
Incorrect:
3 مرة
11-99: use the singular form of the noun.
Correct:
11 مرة
Incorrect:
11 مرات
100, 1000, 1000000, etc: use the singular form.
Correct:
100 مرة
1000 مرة
Incorrect:
100 مرات
1000 مرات
