Dodgems for the ZX81
A special #Norwich #Amiga Group event is happening TOMORROW from 16:00 - 21:00 - we're meeting up at Barcadia on Prince of Wales Road who have kindly let us have some of their space to set a few Amigas up for anyone to come and play on, so do come along to meet (or just catch up with) some of the NAG crew (it has been a while!).
And of course, why not grab a drink and some tokens to chuck into their arcade cabs too?

A few tweaks, a little adjusting here and there, and many MANY code rewrites and I finally get it to do what I want. #pico8 #screenshotsaturday #arcade #Remake

Aagh look at this, it's making me so angry!!! So angry I recorded a rant that's too big to post on social media... lol
I mean god, it's a tate arcade game stretched horizontally to 16:9 widescreen, and then there's this shitty filter. Also the video is 2k so you can see it in all it's crapulence.
I don't wanna come at the person (I probably don't need to say it but don't do that of course) who made this but damn.

Digger machines, precursors to the modern crane game.
These machines were another cultural staple that broke into the mainstream, with many commenting how it seemed you could win just about anything from an #arcade digger.
However, this also attracted particular ire from law-makers. Crane machines were targeted in the infamous 1951 "Johnson Act" which prohibited certain coin-op machines from being shuttled across state lines.

[🧵 6/x] I wish I could show pictures of the cabinet, but, as mentioned previously, I don't think this game was ever released (Sega Retro says "... it did not survive past testing"). Given Sega's cabinet designs at the time, I'd like to think it would've looked like the cabinet to, say, Astro Blaster (with tons of glorious woodgrain paneling), but with some sweet Pig Newton marquee/control area art!

[🧵 4/x] The game absolutely *loves* terrible puns. For starters, the titular character is obviously a play on "Fig Netwon", as well as (I presume) a reference to apple-enthusiast Isaac Newton. Between levels, though, you also get such knee-slappers as "Boy! I never sausage a player!", and "Wow! You've got a lard of points!". Pig Newton saw the titanic worlds of "video games" and "comedy" collide in a way never seen before, and its reverberations are still felt even today!

[🧵 3/x] In Pig Newton, you play a pig that (inexplicably) climbs a giant tree and attempts to collect bird eggs. Unfortunately for you, a pack of wolves is intent on capturing you, and they constantly prowl below the tree and attempt to chop it down with axes. Using the superpower known as "gravity", you attack the wolves by dropping things on them, where "things" range from apples, to beehives, to horseshoes, to... mini nukes from Fallout?! You must collect all eggs to complete a level, but getting caught by the wolves costs a life.

[🧵 2/x] Pig Newton is a (as far as I can tell) unreleased puzzle-platformer developed by Sega in 1983. It is a game for almost everyone, and by "almost everyone", I mean the following:
- Fans of puzzle/platformers
- Fans of Newtonian mechanics
- Fans of terrible, groan-inducing puns
- Fans of The National Review, especially its comics section (yes, really)
- Fans of the wolf from the Soviet cartoon "Well, Just You Wait!"

Finally!!! I got a #Sega Out Run cabinet a couple of months ago and it took me forever to get started with a restoration. Internally, the monitor has received a cap kit and new flyback. there is nothing, NOTHING, as beautiful as harry dean stanton's face reflected in the screen of a pong arcade cabinet

[🧵 11/x] If you thought the boulders were bad, though, the barrage of arrows you face are way worse. These things fire from offscreen, sail effortlessly through all obstacles, and have all the graceful placement of a Kaizo Mario rom hack. Imagine if, in Pac Man, there were intermittent lasers fired from offscreen with perfect accuracy. Fun, right?

PENGOMini - A fun for all the family Arcade game for the ZX Spectrum https://www.indieretronews.com/2023/09/pengomini-fun-for-all-family-arcade.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon #Arcade #GabrieleAmore @Indie_RetroNEWS

[🧵 10/x] The main threat that you face are the aforementioned boulders (which actually look a bit like beach balls). Interestingly, these boulders move of their own accord (and yes, they also can "swim" upward against gravity lol) so they actually function as analogs of Pac Man's ghosts. You can even "guide" the behavior of the boulders like you can with ghosts in Pac Man!

[🧵 9/x] Interestingly, despite being a side-scroller, you can move freely in all four cardinal directions. And how do you move upward, defying all known laws of physics, you ask? Simple: you "swim" upward by dog-paddling in the air. Duh. (I guess this would explain the "dog bones as collectibles" mechanics"?)

[🧵 8/x] The game's goal is to collect treasure and avoid obstacles (boulders, arrows, etc). You progress across multiple stages, culminating in a stage where you grab treasures from large golden statues, Indiana Jones style. It seems to play like a bit like Pac Man, if Pac Man looked like a rotund middle-aged traffic cop with a really swanky walk style. Oh, and you collect dog bones for bonus points.

[🧵 7/x] You wheel the cabinet back inside (still reeking of chemical fumes), and the next few hours become hazy, unmoored from linear time. You have vague recollections of opening the cabinet and installing the kit, as if commanded by some unseen, malevolent force. Uneasily, you turn the cabinet on. The familiar high-pitched whine of the CRT soothes your frazzled nerves… but that solace is quickly shattered as you see the walking animation of the titular "Hero". But there's no turning back now... so let's dive deeper into this Garden of Madness, shall we?

#DailyRetroGame 200: Berzerk (1980)
It’s impossible to not love a game that bellows: “Chicken! Fight like a robot!” But Berzerk was more than some pioneering speech. Its maze-based action was tense, and there was smart design under the hood to generate rooms and give your robot adversaries rudimentary intelligence. It inspired the seminal Robotron, but Berzerk itself still has plenty going for it if you fancy a retro blast.
Play it on: #arcade
[🧵 6/x] BUT. Even with the Donkey Kong artwork covered up, you can still tell it's a Donkey Kong cabinet. And that will not do. So you do what you must. You go to True Value and purchase a cheap bucket of paint, the color resembling the sickly purple that dominates the game's marquee art. You wheel the cabinet out back, pop that can open, and you get to work. By the time you're done and you examine your handiwork, you can hardly contain your glee. You have created a monster.
#RetroGaming #Arcade #DinoRetroGaming

[🧵 5/x] Since this was a conversion kit, I assume that no cabinet was *officially* produced for it (more on that in a moment). I did find images of marquee/control area art that looks official-ish, which you can see below. It's a bit simplistic (and again, the "Hero" depicted seems more Mr Magoo than Indiana Jones), but at least you can finally get that Donkey Kong art covered up, out of sight and out of mind, right?

[🧵 4/x] First off, let's look at the "flyer" (which is really more of a slip of paper). The image of our titular "Hero" is admittedly a bit underwhelming, especially since he seems petrified by the appearance of his own shadow. But look- this is "the kit that will become the one ALL OTHER KITS ARE MEASURED BY..." (note the capitalization on the flyer). At this point, I'm sold. Are you sold? You should be sold. If you're not sold, let me decide for you- you're sold. Moving on...

[🧵 3/x] Well, do I have some good news for you- you purchase a conversion kit! By simply installing a new board in the cabinet, you can have *an entirely new game* up and running on your existing Donkey Kong machine! "No soldering or wiring required", either! Wow! Enter "Hero in the Castle of Doom". With a title that epic, this is sure to be good, right? Right??
(hardware image credit: https://nicole.express/2022/im-going-to-sing-the-castle-of-doom-song-now.html)

[🧵 2/x] The year is 1984. You're a grizzled arcade operator, having survived the blips, beeps, and boops of the Golden Age of Arcade Games. And you (for reasons only known to you) are *sick and fucking tired* of Donkey Kong. Maybe it's the *boo-doo-dee-doo* jump noise that's seared into your brain. Maybe it's the plight of DK himself, relegated to being eternally hounded by a certain plumber. Whatever the reason, you are *done* with Donkey Kong... but what to do?

My old Bram Stoker's Dracula pinball game is going to a new home shortly. This game was rescued from a container and in really bad shape when I received it.
Was a great experience semi restoring it and saving it from the scrap heap. The amount of parts in a pinball game is insane. It's amazing they made (and continue to make) these things at scale.

September 24, 2023 - Day 267 - NewPlay Review

Game: Dirt 5
Platform: Steam
Release Date: Nov 3, 2020
Installation Date: Sep 9, 2023
Unplayed: 15d
Playtime: 34m
Dirt 5 is an arcade off-road racing game developed by Codemasters.
I don't normally talk about who developed a particular game, but today is a little different.
I've always had a bit of a love-hate relationship with racing games. Mainly hate; from 1987 (Test Drive) through until 2019 I tried to like racing games, but I just didn't. Racing with keyboard/mouse is awful, and I couldn't "get" racing with a controller (PS2 / Gran Turismo).
That changed with the Xbox One controller and Forza Horizon 4. It finally clicked for arcade racing. I still don't enjoy technical racing sims.
Dirt Rally & Dirt Rally 2.0 were both an exercise in frustration. I'd heard that Dirt 5 was different, and I had a key for it, so I installed it.
They were correct. Dirt 5 is a whole different exercise in frustration.
As a racing game, it's proficient, and feels a lot like a rally cross between The Crew and Forza Horizon games.
Dirt 5 was released by Codemasters in 2020. Codemasters was purchased by Electronic Arts in 2021. Which explains a lot about why Dirt 5 has been almost impossible to play since 2021.
There is a literal gamebreaking bug, in a game that is less than three years old and remains unfixed. Quite simply, my initial start of this game was a fluke, because after that, it crashed every single time.
It's a known issue. It is unfixed. I put on my technical support hat, and went hunting. It appears that older DRM (Denuvo in this case) does not get on with the e-cores in 12th and 13th gen Intel CPUs.
Gigabyte released a workaround patch for 12th gen Alder Lake CPUs that parks the e-cores to enable compatibility, and I located an app (ParkControl) that will allow me to do the same, and it works consistently.
This is for a game that EA *still* sells.
The Steam forums have multiple posts about it crashing on startup, as do the EA Dirt 5 forums (for Xbox Game Pass PC and Steam).
EA just doesn't appear to care, which is no surprise at all.
Dirt 5 is:
3: OK (for racing)
1: Nope (for EA & DRM)

#DailyRetroGame 196: Windjammers (1994)
Imagine a futuristic Pong, but instead of a ball, the projectile is a terrifyingly fast flying disc. Yep, this was another game that ignored reality and physics – but was better for it. The speedy action might not have had buckets of nuance, but it was a lot of fun, especially in two-player mode. Just don’t copy it at home, unless you want to embed a plastic disc in your friend’s skull.

#DailyRetroGame 194: Cisco Heat (1990)
In Chase HQ, you were a cop, chasing/ramming crims. In Cisco Heat, all pretence at being ‘good guys’ evaporated as the cops blazed through the city in a breakneck, dangerous race. Premise and speedy gameplay aside, the game was notable for its 90-degree turns, hills that would appear like walls, and messy scenery that would shift as if made from jell(y/o). Striking but headache-inducing.
Play it on: #arcade
[🧵 5/x] This is a funny aside, but apparently there was an epidemic of Zaxxon joystick theft, if this service note is to be believed?? The "attractive design" of the Zaxxon joystick (👀) apparently made them a hot commodify, so this service note provides some MacGyver-like procedure to protect your [Zaxxon] joystick.
Did any of y'all steal a Zaxxon joystick back in the day? Be sure to let us know in the comments!
[🧵 4/x] Moving on to the arcade unit itself: while Zaxxon might not have the flashiest cabinet, I happen to absolutely adore it! That wood paneling gives me so much nostalgia for "the Wood Generation" (70's/80's, when wood paneling was in vogue), and the contrast of the silver/black of the control panel makes you feel like you're in a warm, wood-panneled spaceship. Maybe it looks a little "functionality-over-form", but I can't help but love that such a (at the time) futuristic game occupied a cabinet that felt so immediately familiar to us in the (then-"Wood Generation") present.
[🧵 3/x] Zaxxon immediately stood out in the arcade for being one of the first games (that I'm aware of) featuring an isometric perspective. This gives the game a distinct 3-dimensional appearance at a time when most games were strictly 2-dimensional in perspective. Not only does this look cool, it also requires new skills of the player- specifically, adjusting the altitude of the ship in real-time to avoid obstacles and/or precisely land shots on enemies.
[🧵 2/x] Zaxxon is a space shooter created by Sega, comprised of three distinct stages. Stages 1 and 3 see you flying through large “space fortresses”, while stage 2 requires you to fly in free space between them. Each stage has various hazards (turrets, rockets, fighter ships, etc.) to defeat, while also contending with an ever-decreasing fuel supply. At the end of the third stage, you fight a large robot (who I *believe* is the titular “Zaxxon”), after which the waves repeat, albeit with higher difficulty.
[🧵 6/x] The game has a REALLY cool easter egg- on odd-numbered levels, the words "MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU" are written on the Death Star, whereas on even-numbered levels, the *names of the designers* are likewise written on it! These messages usually look like a series of dots to the naked eye and are almost imperceptible under normal operation (as the transition happens very quickly), but can be seen if the brightness is cranked up and if the game is somehow slowed/paused. Someone was kind enough to do just this and detail it on their blog (which is also where the latter two images come from).
Blog link: https://arcadeblogger.com/2022/06/27/atari-is-50-how-about-a-star-wars-easter-egg/
#RetroGaming #Arcade #Atari #Vector #VectorGraphics #StarWars #EasterEgg
[🧵 5/x] Anyway! Now that we know a bit about vector graphics, we can really appreciate how rich Star Wars’ visuals are! Moving onto the cabinets themselves: I've only ever played on the upright version of the cabinet, but a deluxe version exists, which provides a sitdown "cockpit" experience. I actually really like the upright cabinet; that overhanging "marquee hood" is really distinct any time I see it lined up next to other arcade games.
#RetroGaming #Arcade #Atari #Vector #VectorGraphics #StarWars
[🧵 2/x] I’ve wanted to feature a vector graphics game for some time on here, and so here we have: Star Wars! Based on the little-known film of the same name (I think it's about space wizards or something?), Star Wars sees you reliving the final act of the film. The game consists of three waves- a dogfight wave, a surface-flight wave, and a trench-run phase. Each wave has enemies and obstacles specific to that wave (e.g. TIE Fighters, defense cannons, etc), and the final wave (trench-run) culminates in blowing up the Death Star. The cycle then begins anew, but with increased difficulty!

Star Wars (1983)
By Atari, Inc. [Arcade]
[🧵 1/x]
#RetroGaming #Arcade #Atari #Vector #VectorGraphics #StarWars
[🧵 5/?] Interestingly, the cabinet actually had a *second mode* entirely separate from the game, entitled "Doodle City"! It gave you a fixed amount of time to draw using *any* of the objects from the game, allowing you to create some really trippy visuals! (They remind me a lot of drawings made in Kidpix lol)
[🧵 4/?] The cabinet is really cool- its futuristic styling actually kinda reminds me of the aesthetic of NeXT computers, such as the NeXTcube! Unfortunately, the game wasn't much of a success, so these cabinets were produced in limited numbers.
[🧵 3/?] The historical aspect of I, Robot comes from the fact that it's (quoting Wikipedia) "the first commercially produced arcade video game rendered entirely with real-time, flat-shaded, 3D polygon graphics". I featured a game previously (Cube Quest) that used 3D objects on top of FMV backgrounds, but I, Robot is all polygons! In fact, the game's attract mode touts this very fact (in between displaying gameplay hints), as depicted below.
[🧵 2/?] I, Robot is a quirky game, as well as a historic one! Its quirkiness comes from its gameplay, which acts something like a combination puzzle game and shooter. The puzzle-like gameplay sees you strategically running across pathways while dodging various 3D obstacles, while the shooter-like gameplay involves shooting objects while flying through space.

In a time of consolidation and stagnation, Cointronics was one of the companies who really tried to shake up the game with new ideas.
While this story is probably missing some elements to fully explain their closure, it's still a fascinating #arcade story and a look at the world before the Big Bang of video games arrived on the scene!
Cointronics' story begins at Nutting Associates, the company that later brought *Computer Space* to the #arcade market some years later.
Bill Nutting needed to redesign his *Knowledge Computer *game, so he went to a firm where he met an engineer named Ransom White.
White redesigned the machine as *Computer quiz* which became an incredibly popular amusement, igniting the (possibly second) quiz game boom in coin-op.
#DailyRetroGame 190: Tapper (1983)
The bars in this game were rough. Failure to serve someone in time would find the bartender dragged across a bartop and hurled into a wall. So you had to carefully balance sliding drinks along the bartop, grabbing empties, and collecting tips to kick off a show that would distract rowdy drinkers. Quality stuff in the arcades – but also check out the surprisingly excellent #Atari2600 port.
Play it on: #arcade
Let's spin a tale about an American town, the city of Rochester, New York. (Coincidentally, where the Strong Museum of Play is currently located.)
Peo Manufacturing was offering a game called the Little Whirlwind, right before the dawn of the #pinball boom in 1930.
However, despite having a patent on the device, the little countertop machine had a long history. Let's tackle another #arcade story.
The best thing about Base Arcade in Belfast over the weekend was the young guy who paid money into the arcade with freeplay cabinets to program a ZX Spectrum. 😂
Anyway, what makes the game unusual in the Sonic franchise is that it uses trackballs to control Sonic and friends! Kinda like Marble Madness. Looking at footage of some of the later stages, I cannot imagine the strain those trackballs were put under, since you have to go FAST and have very little margin for error as the game goes on.

#DailyRetroGame 185: Rainbow Islands (1987)
Somehow even cuter than Bubble Bobble (and with even more annoying music), this vertical scroller had you fire rainbows across the screen that when stomped on would crush enemies. No pots of gold at the end of the rainbow here, then – just violence. Great fun, though, and with fab home ports, which were mostly criticised for lacking a co-op mode the arcade original never had. Hmm.
Play it on: #arcade
Unfortunately, I've never actually played SegaSonic the Hedgehog- between its Japan-only release and its (I assume) rarity, I've never actually seen a cabinet in the wild. In fact, I'm having difficulty just locating a photo of a cabinet online. I assume they came in Japanese "Candy" Cabs, although I found a photo of a (custom?) cabinet that seems more US-centric in design (photo from SEGAbits birdsite acct).
#RetroGaming #Arcade #Sega #Sonic #SonicTheHedgehog
#DinoRetroGaming
SegaSonic the Hedgehog is Japan-only arcade game starring Sonic, as well as two lesser-known (but fan-favorite!) characters: Ray the Flying Squirrel and Mighty the Armadillo. Everything takes place from an isometric perspective, and gameplay has a time-attack-meets-obstacle-course quality that's really visually impressive.

A little KRULL update. I've decided to restore it. Removed paint on inside of cabinet to reveal some of that beautiful artwork. I've also sourced out where I can get many of the parts I need. Original parts are hard to come by, but I met a person who does 1:1 reproductions of the harness and boards. If I can't go original, I may take this fellow up. Some Q-Bert parts are compatible, so I may take that route, too. We shall see.
#DailyRetroGame 182: The Typing of the Dead (1999)
You’d loved to have been in the room. “You know what House of the Dead needs more of?” “What?” “Typing!” And so Sega mashed its fab light gun shooter into Mavis Beacon and the result was… awesome. Rather than aim and fire, you smashed out words accurately, or had your face torn off. Now someone have the next Walking Dead TV show do the same, for the yuks.

#DailyRetroGame 180: Kung-Fu Master (1984)
Today, this might look like a primitive brawler where the protagonist emits sounds like a chicken. But there was a lot going on here in 1984. The side-scrolling fighting action was more like a shmup than a ponderous karate game. The relentless enemy attacks foreshadowed brawlers like Double Dragon. And the boss battles reportedly became the foundation for Street Fighter. Not bad, eh?
