These include the sun, Venus and Mercury. On either side of the map, menus for settings and data display.

SkyChart / Cartes du Ciel is a libre, multi-platform and mature celestial atlas, much more complete than a simple planetarium. It allows to obtain sky maps of different kinds from the data of numerous catalogs of stars and nebulae, the position of planets, asteroids and comets. Its highly customizable interface (catalogs used, color and size of stars and nebulae, mode of representation of planets, superposition of photographs, visibility conditions, ...) also allows synchronization with a telescope, opening it to many applications.

The AI is deep in thought, with colored dots representing the evaluation of the best moves to play (the darker the dots, the better the probabilities). On the right-hand side of the UI, players' score curves for each move and an evaluation of their chances of winning the game in real time.

KaTrain is a libre, multi-platform interface for learning the game of Go by analyzing games (in the same way as Scid for chess) and providing feedback on the moves made by the KataGo AI (free & integrated into the interface). It provides an analysis of the player's games, indicating the most costly moves in terms of points lost. It also allows you to play against the AI (at different levels and playing styles) and get immediate feedback on the mistakes you've made, as well as the possibility of going back. It is also possible to automatically generate targeted SGF analyses showing the biggest mistakes.

The GUI with a strategy game. The central part is occupied by a map divided into hexagons with pixelart units. The period is medieval, several Mongol units and a trebuchet surround a castle in the center. The units have an icon for easy understanding (mongol, sword, trebuchet, ...), slightly transparent when not selected. The Mongol on horseback on the right of the castle is selected. The castle (named Elephantine) seems to be under siege. On the left of the UI several command buttons (Sleep, Pillage Pasture, Explore, Wait, ...), below the characteristics of the selected unit (Keshik, 2 stars, 5/5, XP 5/20, ...), in the lower middle a box with what seems to be a report on the selected unit (Keshik vs Elephantine). To the right of the UI, a message area ("The resistance in Sydney has ended!", ...), lower right a mini map of the discovered game area. At the top of the interface a hamburger menu, and near it the title "Mongolia". At the top middle several indicators, the period (1520 AD) and on the right an "Overview" button.

UnCiv is a 100% libre, multi-platform, SP/MP (by exchange of "User ID"), turn-based strategy game (4X) & Empire building, inspired by Civilization V: the game starts in 4000 BC Christ, the player directs a nation or an ethnic group, with the aim of supremacy over the other protagonists, leading his group until 2050 AD. It's a neat game that offers in-game help to get started, SP/multi, map editor and game save / load. Very good !

@DergnNamedSkye This is *one* of the reasons, something over 6 years ago, i decided to leave #openSUSE #Tumbleweed & enter the #Arch world... TW's #mirrors are horribly slow, in Australia, such that >2000 pkgs every update meant that the process took me several hours every time. Ugh.

Initially i loved the conceptual purity of #TW, in that one's OS gets effectively replaced, each update... but then once the daily grind dawned on me, love turned to loathing.

Otoh, not only does Arch have much faster mirrors for me, each system update involves only a subset of the installed pkgs, not every single pkg, so the overall process is lightning fast in comparison.

The latest Arch update required a simple change to the pacman.conf file by the user. For me it was a matter of 1 minute, but my novice self when I was starting out on the GNU/Linux path would have been amazed and would not have found it so simple.

Anyway, it all depends on the vision that the distro maintainers have for their project, what kind of users they want to attract and, ultimately, what they want its path to be.

@thunderbird #thunderbird #linux

My TB data spans decades, for emails, tasks & events [oh, & also contacts]. I've lost count of however many TB iterations / versions it's lived thru. It began life yonks ago in Win7, & lives now, for many years, in Linux.

For at least a couple of years, my Calendar has had this damn annoying problem. For many Events, but not all, it is just impossible to directly duplicate them. Both Ctrl-C Ctrl-V, & RMB-Copy RMB-Paste, simply do NOTHING [for it seems like the majority (but not entirety) of my Events].

Research lead me to https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2015334 [my distro is #Arch not #Fedora, but IMO that's irrelevant]. I was galled to see that bug report was closed without action or solution; also that it was raised only with Redhat not actually Thunderbird.

In exasperation, recently i conceived this inefficient albeit effective workaround: for the target Event, RMB-ConvertTo-Task, then edit said new task to desired date for the intended duplicate, then convert said task to a new Event... then correct all the text formatting that was buggered by this silly indirect process.

I've wondered if possibly the database has become corrupted somehow due to surviving all the historical TB version changes, to cause this duplication problem. So last night i thought i'd Export the Tasks & Events ICS file, then Import it into a clean TB profile elsewhere [in some vague hope that this process might magically "fix" any putative data corruption; hahahaha yeah right]. The Export nominally succeeded, being an 81 MB file. The Import failed every time, with the error msg per pic.

What is a frustrated user now supposed to do? 🤷‍♀️

No importable items found in the file.

#Mastodon #AdvancedWebInterface #LocalTimeline #FollowedHashtags #css

In my early months of Masto, last year, in my original #Instance, i personalised my Masto browser view to have five permanently visible columns, then used some #Stylus #css to adjust column widths, font sizes etc for comfy viewing in my browsers. The fifth column was the local timeline, which i used for casual reading during the times my Home column remained fairly "under-nourished".

One day, sometime last year, i learned from someone's helpful post that we could follow hashtags, something nowadays just blindingly obvious, but to me back then was utterly unknown. So i began doing so, adding more over time as needs & wants be.

A month or two ago, 'ish, i suddenly realised that nowadays i was spending ZERO time in that local timeline, given my Home column is always full as a goog, full up to dolly's wax, full to pussy's bow, et al 😜 Hence it was time to again edit my css, & my Masto interface, to revert to the four-column view.

TL;DR: following hashtags is fabulously handy!

Fwiw...

Whew! I'm back. Just dropped #Pop_OS in favor of a fresh install of the #ArchLinux based #EndeavourOS with #KDE Plasma. It's so pretty 💜 😍

So now I just have to learn the diffs between #Debian based distros and #Arch.

And how to customize KDE to my liking.

Also thought I'd try out the #Fish shell over my usual #zsh.

Yay, most of the shortcuts I have committed to muscle memory currently open something else! :ablobcathappypaws:

EndeavourOS desktop screenshot showing the Fish shell in Konsole and the Emoji Selector app against a purple-themed space wallpaper.

Updating an #arch #linux laptop after 6 years on a shelf. Wish me luck.

Dear #fediverse please send me your #linux #distro #recommendations

I'm coming from Pop_OS! Which frankly has worked FANTASTIC for the past 4–5 years for me, but it's getting a little bit stale?

Generally I prioritize:
- Software Compatibility
- Game-a-bility
- Development

Meaning it's mostly been #debian based distributions with the rare interjection from #Arch/#Manjaro, very little #RedHat influence (always struck me as "for corporate" over "for individuals"?)

@thelinuxEXP #LinuxMint is my number one choice for a distro that “just works.” #Cinnamon is my DE of choice for its easy customization & simplicity.

I wish that there was an good #Arch distro that was simple and easy like #Manjaro, because I really enjoy using it. #EndeavourOS makes me build all my apps, Arch makes me build my entire OS, #Garuda leans too heavily on the AUR.

At this very moment I’m installing #ArcoLinux, which I’m hoping will be a good Manjaro alternative.

As I had already made a "Tier List" video about desktop environments, it was high time I did the same for #Linux distributions.

Included are #Ubuntu, #Solus, #Manjaro, #Arch, #Gentoo, #Deepin, #elementaryOS, #Fedora, and a lot more!

I also tried to keep it more interesting than just "my face over tier maker", but let me know how well that went :D

The magnificent Norman arch in the wall of St Ninian's Church, Lamington, near the A702 south-west of Biggar in Lanarkshire. This is almost all that remains of a much earlier church that was swallowed up when a new one was built in 1721. More pics and info https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/biggar/stninians/index.html

Today's sub-quest, alongside a day of work, is to try and boot, access and upgrade these x2 #raspberrypi home servers that I haven't used for around 18-months. Both running #arch so will have some hefty upgrades waiting..

I finally decided to blow pop-os away on my Galago Pro the other day and install vanilla #Arch. Also decided I was going to give #Wayland and #SwayWM a go. So far so good. Still working through various configurations and getting things setup as I like, but I’m digging it.

Inside, looking out.

Arches National Park - Utah 2019.

#BlackAndWhiteLandscape #Monochrome #Photography #Arch #Cave #ArchesNationalPark #Utah

Black and white image: The view is through a rock arch that gives the impression of looking out from the seclusion of a cave. Water has pooled under the arch after recent rain. Reflected in the water, and framed by the arch surround, are twisted and gnarled trees that somehow eke out an existence amongst the rocks.

Hi #Fediverse #geeks!

I already mentioned this problem in this toot: I am getting crazy trying to solve my #webcam not working in #Linux, in particular in #Ubuntu 22.10 and #Manjaro… It works in #Windows.

I own a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10.

Is there anything I can do?

Just had squeeky bum time. Booted my #Arch setup and was dropped into an emergency shell ! Thankfully I've managed to fully recover from that. Right relax and now breathe 🙃

Idea for one of you trans/catgirl/nerds — get #Arch running on a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_Ray (I'd say #Debian but none of y'all would be interested then..)

⚠️ Camel case isn't just for people using screen readers, it's also important for a multicultural fediverse.

For example:

#nosearch means "No Search" in English.

In Spanish means "I don't know Arch".

🕹️ Title: NetHack 4
🦊️ What's: A libre fork of NetHack (an old RPG), focused on improving the code & the UI, while preserving the gameplay

A modern and libre graphic version of NetHack (NetHack 4, in AUR repository), with a bird's eye view of the discovered subterranean (fog of war). Very small, top left, in one of the rooms, the protagonist (me, a woman in a bikini, at the beginning of the game) accompanied by her lovely dog near a staircase leading to a lower level. Three other rooms were discovered, one with a fountain, another with a stone lizard statue, and another with a book (unread). At the top of the UI, the system messages (history), and at the bottom of the UI, the player's statistics (Name, HP, Pw, ...) and a help on the commands.

NetHack 4 is a libre and multi-platform fork of NetHack, resulting from a mix of AceHack (dead project, editable controls, gameplay & UI modification, based on NetHack 3.4.3, UnNetHack, SLASH'EM, & GruntHack) & NitroHack (dead project, netplay, UI improvement, ...) variants, and aiming to improve the code and interface, while preserving the gameplay. NetHack is a very old libre and multi-platform roguelike and a reference (like Rogue) for Hack and Slash. Its storyline is centered on the quest for the amulet of Yendor in the underground of Gehennom. Unlike many other Hack and Slash games, the emphasis is on exploring its (procedurally generated) underground and not just killing everything that moves. In fact, killing everything that moves is the best way to die quickly. The player is accompanied by a pet that helps him in his progression.

I am incredibly stressed out since it has been two weeks now and I keep having trouble with my new #ThinkPad #X1 Carbon Gen 10.

I made the impulsive and definitely wrong decision of immediately removing #Windows and installing only @vanillaos.

There are several problems, that I cannot figure out if they are there because of #Linux #compatibility limits and absent #drivers, or rather if it is an hardware problem.

Above all, the webcam is not recognized. Like it does not even show up in /dev

Furthermore, the 2.8K screen has the PERFECT resolution for a 14" laptop, but it is OLED and it looks TERRIBLE. I hope it is only a calibration problem, but, again, I do not know how to test it…

Since #VanillaOS still has an outdated Linux #kernel, I installed #Manjaro, but upon opening #Cheese I always get “no device found”.

To increase my stress, my request to subscribe to linux.org got rejected since I signed up using a #VPN. I am losing it 😭

Please convince me not to get back to my #MacBook. I thought ThinkPads were the most Linux-ready devices!

EDIT: My specific device is this

Does anyone have any idea if it exists a comprehensive list of different #Linux #distros and their basic features?

I mean something like an #AwesomeDistros repository, or (even better) a filterable and searchable #database / #dataset

#FLOSS #Distributions #OS #OSOS #Unix #GNOME #KDE #X11 #Arch #Manjaro #LinuxMint #Ubuntu #Debian

CC: @ademalsasa @9to5linux @aral @mirkobrombin

I swapped out #UBPorts for #Arch with #Phosh on my #PinePhone. For me, it is smoother, more functional, and much more familiar.

I hate Phosh's default scaling, though. It is set at 2 which makes everything too big and crowded. It is easy to change by editing /usr/share/phosh/phoc.ini and changing the "scale" under "[output:DSI-1]".

Irritatingly, 1 makes everything too small and difficult to touch with my sausage fingers and non-whole numbers keep the wallpaper from covering the "desktop".

@hund@linuxrocks.online I agree with #Antergos. I prefer #Arch and have it on most of my installs but I decided to go with Antergos when setting up my most recent PC last August. I think it is a great alternative for Arch users who have learned their way around The Arch Way but are getting too old to be bothered with starting from scratch every time.

Tried #Plasma again. Hated it again. Is it just #Arch's implementation that sucks or is it just because I always use an account that was set up with and for #GNOMEShell? Vital things seem to not work. I couldn't configure Jabber settings, I couldn't connect to my IMAP account (or even see it in KMail), something kept stealing focus but closing before I could tell what it was... just major annoyance like those.

@kennetmattfolk@mastodon.cloud What about #Antergos? Any #Arch based distro should be able to use one of the AUR helpers like #yaourt on the command line or #pamac-aur graphically to install packages. Opinion: Much better than having a mess of PPAs and snaps and flatpacks and appimages and....
