Well, it's only complicated to these #archaeologists because they missed that brilliant #documentary #series from the 1960s called The Flintstones in which the space alien The Great Gazoo visited Fred and Barney.

Been going through some old boxes, finding interesting things, but also finding it interesting what I'm saving versus throwing out.

Old receipts, homework, study materials, bills, etc... All pretty much worthless, available online, or easily recreateable.

#Drawings, #RPG character sheets, notes which later became #songs? Absolutely priceless.

It reminds me of the #HardScifi proposal that #aliens / #archaeologists won't care about recreateable #Science, only weird #Art.

Finally, the idea for my #exhibition! " #Archaeologists made a revolutionary #discovery in 2033. In the vicinity of pottery shards from the late Betschdorf and Soufflenheim cultures (early 21st century), they found objects reminiscent of ancient #reliquaries. A preciously ornated round cheese box with hand-made perlage and braid in orange and green colour shades. Inside is a green-grey moth, Jordanita subsolana. The wings on one side are hidden under a hand-made gossamer of raw silk, my symbol for vanishing. Once native to Alsace, they are now considered to have disappeared.
A tiny precious element in the same green as the moth is a piece of plastic waste that melted into grey concrete. Glass beads are fixed into a golden crochet "flower".

I have a question for my fellow #archaeologists out there about #archaeology #publishing. For two years, I was part of a large #rescue #excavation project while working in a local museum. The excavations finished this year, but I resigned (for reasons outside of archaeology) from the museum at the end of last year. While I was at the museum, I was the lead archaeologist on the project. Naturally, talks have now begun about a publication of the project.

Troubling #News from #Argentina, as the #HumanRights of both #Indigenous communities in #Jujuy province, and the #Archaeologists who work alongside them, are increasingly being trampled on by an #Authoritarian government.

#UniversidadNacional #UniversidadDeBuenosAires #NationalUniversity #UniversityOfBuenosAires #Archaeology #ICAZ

A press release from ICAZ, the International Council for Archaezoology. Dated 31/07/2023.

It reads:

"We, the members of the Executive and International Committees of the International Council for Archaeozoology (ICAZ), on behalf of the full membership of ICAZ, declare our strongest support of scientist colleagues, teachers and professors, indigenous peoples and the people generally of Jujuy province, Argentina.

"These people have been suffering severe repression and illegal harassment and prosecution in the last couple of months after demonstrating for better working conditions, the preservation of natural resources in their territories, and the promulgation of a new provincial constitution that is at odds with basic human rights, such as making public demonstrations, without the necessary consultation to Jujuy people.

"Several colleagues, including archaeologists, are affected by these measures, such as illegal trespassing by the police into the National University and threats by the governor to the University of Buenos Aires.

"As an international academic community commonly hosted in universities and often working side by side with indigenous peoples, we would like to express our deep concern for those measurements against human rights, and affirm our solidarity with the people of Jujuy."

#Archaeology: 1,800-Year-Old #Spices Are Earliest Evidence of #Curry Making in #SoutheastAsia

#Archaeologists found evidence of spices such as turmeric and cloves from ancient #Vietnam, suggesting South Asians shared their culinary traditions via an ancient maritime trade route

By Timmy Broderick on July 21, 2023

"Traces of eight spices were found: turmeric, ginger, fingerroot (Chinese ginger, lesser galangal), sand ginger (aromatic ginger), galangal (a relative of ginger and turmeric), clove, nutmeg and cinnamon. (One nutmeg fragment even retained a faint version of its signature pungent, slightly nutty aroma.) Because most of these spices originated on distant islands, traders would have had to bring them from several thousand kilometers away by sea. Hung says the stone tools were also likely imported, which suggests the larger culinary practice of incorporating such spices into foods was also borrowed from another ancient culture. 'This study reveals that trading activities were rather complicated, as not only precious goods were moving around, but also people and their entire set of culinary cultures were transferred between the regions,' she says."

It's amazing to see such extensive ancient #landscapes. In this aerial view, the low banks on the hill nearest & more distant hills are the boundaries of #prehistoric (probably Iron Age) #fields, created up to 3,000 years ago & farmed for at least 1,000 years into the Roman period. Marked at A, top R, is the #RomanoBritish #settlement on Upavon Down - the field #archaeologists evocatively describe how 'it's possible to walk through the streets of one settlement, into the next settlement.' #bliss
