A painting of someone being crucified. They have a crown of thorns and a halo, so I guess it's Jesus. His body is exactly the same width as the cross, and his arms are at perfect right angles and not much thinner than the wood they are nailed to. He is wearing a wee loincloth. The background is indigo purple. There is no blood on Christ's hands, even where the nails have been driven in, but there is red beneath the length of the arms of the cross, and it drips down from the ends. There are also broken lines of red along the top of the painting, and diagonal red lines from the top of the cross to the ends of the arms. Christ has his eyes closed, but doesn't seem to be in pain. More like he's meditating.

On th the right are some cream-coloured buildings, but the painting style is a little impressionist, so it's not clear what the buildings are, right here on the beach. Beyond them is a dark cliff, with the silhouettes of houses on the crestline against the dawn sky.

A lovely big generous bunch of flowers in a glass vase, painted in a largely but not entirely realistic style. I'm rubbish at remembering which flowers are which, I'm afraid. There are some blue ones, some pink ones, some peach ones, some straw-coloured ones, some whitish-yellow ones, some lilac ones, some red ones. They are all fairly big, with either cup-shaped heads or flat daisylike heads. There are some strands of grass and wheat dotted in there too. The vase's glass has a green tint, but is still transparent so you can see the stems dipping their toes in the water. There are some snailshells (empty) by the base of the vase. In the top right there is a building arch.

Verging on the abstract, we see against a yellow background a strutting bird. It appears to be stalking from our left to our right. Head high, chest out, tail feathers splayed in display, like a peacock. But, erm, this bird is all apple red, with some black outlining here and there. Are there red peacocks? Bloody lovely painting though but.

If you forced me to name my favourite #bird, I'd tell you that hierarchicalisation is a foul habit, but I'd have to pick the #BarnOwl. (Sorry #tern, #swift, #pigeon, #cuckoo and #kestrel. They made me do it.)

But I've very rarely seen them with my own eyes in the wild. When I have, I've always been astonished by the size of their wings - captured beautifully here.

A beautiful barn owl hoverhunts for voles on its surprisingly large white wings at the messy margin of a neat field that has been ploughed to brown white-tinged rows. A ditch zigzags straight away from us on the right, leading our eyes to a river, and on its far banks the outline of an English church and... summer trees? But on the nearside the trees are bare. Seagulls forage on the bare field, with a few taking flight. But it's daylight, and barn owls only hunt in the day when the nights are too short. So I don't know what season it is. The style is very neat and precise, but not photorealistic. I bloody love this painting.

A voluptuous figure, sitting nude but demurely posed, with the mouthpiece of some sort of cornet nestled in her bosom. Her fingers and toes are (for some reason) the only pointy thing about her, for all else is generously curved. Her head looks tiny because of her Rubinesque figure, and because her hair has been shaped into two massive wingshapes. Her skin is a pale bronze, and she sits on a metallic yellow background.

A group of 7 people that the title tells us are African women, painted from a distance and an elevated position. They all seem to be wearing head-dresses. One of them is carrying a baby in a papoose type thing. One is carrying a trug of fruit or veg. They are all wearing shades of blue from a limited palate. The paint is daubed onto the canvas quite roughly, and we see no features on their faces, but they all appear to be looking at us, as if we have disturbed them. We can see the skin on their faces, their arms and legs, and it is all the same shade of black.

Look, this is a crudely rendered owl, okay? But what a charmer! In shocking cerise, with blue eyes and little ear tufts. Dots up the the breast, stripes on the left wing, which is closest to us. The other wing is held slightly open. A bit of blue plant behind. Maybe some sort of shell in front. I don't care about those things. I love owls, and this one's a belter.

So. One level, this is a nice drawing of a slim but curvy young woman reclining nude on a chaise longue with her right leg bent at the knee and crossing over her left. She is lying side on to us, but turning her head leftwards in our direction. She has shoulder-length brown hair. Behind her is an open window with the shutters to one side, allowing her a view of a church (and, presumably, vice versa). She is holding a fan, and there is a vase with sunflowers next to the window. The depiction is stylised rather than realistic, but not overly so. So far, so ordinary. But! The colouring is... rather psychedelic. She is horizontally divided by a white line; above it is red, beneath is blue. Her right arm is similar, but yellow, red and blue. Her left arm has a green tinge.The rest of the portrait is similarly, starkly garish. I have no idea what the artist meant to convey by this. I just know I like looking at it, and not just cos it's a hot lass in the nuddy.

We are looking past two tables (with fruit, playing cards and a mug) through a window to a hilltop town and church. Inside everything is blue and patterned. Outside, it looks like a splendid day. This is not a realistic-looking picture, but it is bright, colourful and fun.
