I had said a few months ago about being on a paper with a giant author list (at least for me).

Anyway, that paper is now on the arXiv, and it's a fun one: https://arxiv.org/abs/2312.03639

"The Initial Mass Function Based on the Full-sky 20-pc Census of ∼3,600 Stars and Brown Dwarfs"

We (and I use the part of we that includes "me" *very* loosely) took a census of the neighborhood, and the result is a stellar mass function down to 5 Jupiter masses. #Astrodon #Astrophysics #Astronomy #BackyardWorlds

So it should be dark here, but there's a lone street/security light in the middle of the property and it spoils any #astrophotography shot taken in that direction. The electric co-op owns it but I pay for it. My spouse says we should have them turn it off. It would be very dark.

Very neat follow-up study of the radio detections of millisecond pulsars in the Omega Centauri core, with CHANDRA, finding correlation between spider pulsar companion mass and X-ray luminosity.

The redbacks give off more X-rays!

Omega Cent. is a super interesting Globular Cluster to study with pulsars, as it is so much more massive than other Milky Way GCs. Some folks think it is the remnant component of a former, now cannibalised galaxy - which makes probing the dynamics and binary configurations in the core interesting!

A rare case of an in-sync gravitational lockstep in a solar system.

A star smaller and cooler than our Sun hosts a truly strange family of planets: six “sub-Neptunes” – possibly smaller versions of our own Neptune – moving in a cyclic rhythm. This orbital waltz repeats itself so precisely it can be readily set to music.

Heads up, friends.

A Class 4 Geomagnetic storm is headed our way for end of this week! There should be lots of nice aurora, even getting to mid-latitudes.

If you get to a dark sky, and have a phone that can do 30-sec exposures, you should be able to catch them. Point towards the N/S poles.

First discovery of a disc around a star in another galaxy! A few years ago astronomers pointed ESO's Very Large Telescope to our galactic neighbour, the Large Magellanic Cloud. They spotted two jets coming out of a dust-hidden star, a sign that it might have a disc around it.

Now, using ALMA, they've found evidence of such a rotating gas disc, similar to those in our galaxy where planets form around young stars.

Three observations, in successively greater detail, make up this image. At the left, a wispy cloud of orange surrounds a blue-purple region. A small square of this image is blown up into an observation in the centre of the image. This shows a black background with many white dots, and a small central object containing a bright pink dot, a red hazy line pointing towards the bottom left, and a blue hazy line pointing towards the top right. This object is blown up, again, into the right of the image. This shows the same dot and hazy lines, larger and pixelated.

Check it!

Sir Francis Graham-Smith, a Knight & Astronomer Royal (1982-1990) used two of my plots from my Master's thesis in his article on pulsars!

Yeah, am nerding out about this ... he literally wrote the textbook, sitting on my desk! 🤓📚

He also celebrated turning 100 earlier this year!

Two plots from a publication. The left plot shows pulsars but plotted by their rotational period vs. spin down. It shows that different categories of pulsars cluster around different regions. The right plot shows a large oval with a grid drawn onto it. This represents galactic coordinates. Overlaid are a number of data points representing a variety of different pulsars.
Intro graphic and title for an article. The graphic is showing the Crab Nebula, an explosive cloud of energised gas surrounding a pulsar. The title of the article is "Pulsars - a concise introduction"

"Beyond systematics in the data/analysis, if the model is incorrect
there are only two viable ways to “fix” it: by changing the early
time (
z

by a global modification, possibly touching the model’s fundamental
assumptions (e.g., homogeneity, isotropy, gravity). None of these
three options has the consensus of the community.

Fediverse, #astrodon, I bring you the cringe United holiday video, featuring a character who is allegedly a professional astronomer.

* How does she not know how to check a bag?
* "Miss Elle Towe" not Dr. Elle Towe
* She is flying first class for some reason?
* Inexplicably accepting a ride from a stranger

She must have wealthy parents to buy her a Polaris class ticket (to Europe?) and is also hopelessly naive.

Season 1, Episode 3 of our #podcast was about the #constellation #pisces

In honor of that episode, here's M74, a face-on spiral galaxy located 32 million LY away in Pisces.

From link in toot: A spiral galaxy like our own Milky Way, known as Messier 74. Shown face-on from our vantage point on Earth, the galaxy's sparkling arms spiral out from a bright white core. The core appears vibrant and alive, and crackles with lightening-like, pale blue light. Glowing, high-energy stars in purple, white, and orange, dot the lengths of the spiraling arms. Webs of murky dust crisscross the space between the curving silver blue arms, also known as dust lanes.

Aaaah, I've missed this so much! Working from a balcony overlooking the Chilean #Atacama desert, with ESO's Very Large #Telescope in the background under clear blue skies.

A photograph of a desertic landscape. The ground is brown and barren, and the sky is deep blue with no clouds. There's a hill in the background with several shiny telescope domes perched on it. To the right, the facade of a four-story building stretches into the distance. The facade is ochre, blending with the environment, and has a long balcony.
