I've spent a large number of nights the last month and a half or so fighting with my mount to try to get a good image out of my C8. This is the result. It's about 24 hours of good data. I think I used less than half the data I collected.

Thank you to everyone who put up with me setting the last several photos to Lord Huron lyrics and good news I have plenty of night photos to go

The normal view of the entire nebula requires a mosaic of at least two frames on this telescepe; for this, I kept it simple and concentrated on the centre of the nebula, where the veins of dark nebulae run through the main bright emission nebulosity.

An attempt to move the 16" #telescope to the back of the house and a darker sky was too much for my back. So I'll stick to shooting to the east and setting targets like Messier 13 before it says goodbye.

New #astrophotography project in the works, this is the Fossil Footprint nebula in Perseus.
Here's a sneak preview on some of the data I collected in the Hydrogen alpha wavelength.

I ain't never been away so long; don't look back, them days are gone 🎵

In my youth I never imagined that computer technology would come to this.
I am sitting here, typing this on a computer that I can slip into a (large) jacket pocket. As I do so, another even smaller computer is connected to a third computer just outside my window. This third computer is the size of a hardcover novel, and is using a modified memory array to gather starlight with a level of clarity that would have required a telescope that would have taken two people to handle and hours to set up.
This I set up in minutes, and will have completed gathering the light in about 30 minutes from now. By this time tomorrow, I will have a fully processed image of the Horsehead Nebula.
Sometimes, technology is wonderful and awe inspiring.
I wonder what my astronomer father would have made of all this.

Get closer to the stars thanks to @catherinerhyde who's recently made a Newsmast account!
They may be an author by day but by night they're stunning us all! Especially when they shared an amazing photo of the Jellyfish Nebula recently - that's definitely worth checking out.

#SkyWatch #Astrophotography M101 aka the Pinwheel Galaxy is a face-on spiral galaxy 21 million light years away in the Ursa Major constellation. It is 170,000 light years across and contains a trillion stars and six visible supernovae, the last of which became visible in May 2023. M101 is the closest of many galaxies seen in the direction of Ursa Major, as shown in the bottom image. Each label highlights a galaxy listed in the Principal Galaxies Catalog. All captured from my deck.

I have seen what the darkness does, said goodbye to who I was 🎵

My seeing conditions are usually not particularly great. And so it was this past Nov 25 when I captured some #Jupiter data. Red spot and moons were hiding during my window of opportunity. But when there is a rare clear sky, got to make the most of it! 🤪
Here is an animation covering about 4 hours. And a couple of the better individual frames. The changing seeing conditions are quite evident, even over the period of just 4 hours.

I'm very isolated, with my nearest neighbor a quarter mile away, and it's a mile away to my next neighbor. And so on. So it should be dark here, but there's a lone street/security light in the middle of the property and it spoils any #astrophotography shot taken in that direction. The electric co-op owns it but I pay for it. My spouse says we should have them turn it off. It would be very dark.
Here's M33 taken just west of the light. Lots of data lost to glow.

First dibs on Mastodon, selling my astrophotography mount, the iOptron CEM26 and LiteRoc 1.75” tripod, comes with polar scope and hand controller as well; as well as two counterweights.
Mount is about 2 years old and works perfectly; cosmetic signs of use.
I've upgraded to a larger one so selling it.
This is a great GOTO starter mount for setups up to 26lbs.
All deep sky pics on https://www.astrobin.com/users/madrobby/ shot with it.
Pickup in Tucson, AZ.

Lastly, at center here is a little group of unnamed mountains nearest the crater Eimmart K in eastern Mare Crisium seen on UT 29th November. These peaks are only really noticeable around this phase of the Moon; on nights just after new, they're in the shadow of nearby mountain peaks Alhazen α and β to the east.
There is hardly any mention of these peaks in the literature. They seem to be kīpukas, structures that lava flows around but not over.

This view shows the 177-km-wide crater Petavius, located on the southeastern side of Mare Fecunditatis, on UT 29th November. It's one of the largest craters of Lower (i.e., early) Imbrian age, formed about 3.8 billion years ago. Its most notable feature is the large rille in its southwestern quadrant. This feature is a graben: subsurface forces pushed the land apart and its center sank. #Moon #Lunar #Astrophotography

This is Langrenus, a 132-km-wide crater on the eastern shore of the Mare Fecunditatis, seen on UT 29th November. It dates to the Eratosthenian period (~3.2-1.1 billion years ago). It's notable for its terraced walls, representing landslides down an originally steeper rim in the time since its formation. #Moon #Lunar #Astrophotography

In this view, mountains on the southeastern rim of the crater Darwin cast long shadows over neighboring crater Lamarck at sunrise on UT 26th November. #Moon #Lunar #Astrophotography

This image, made on UT 2nd December, shows the eastern shore of Mare Serenitatis from the crater Posidonius (left) to crater le Monnier (right). Posidonius is a "floor-fractured crater" with numerous uplifts and rilles. le Monnier was flooded with lava from Serenitatis, which destroyed its western rim. #Moon #Lunar #Astrophotography

First light with new mount #astrophotography
If you’re new to astrophotography or thinking about it as a hobby: the by far most important thing in your rig is a good mount and tripod.
You can have the world’s best optics and the most advanced camera—they’ll be mid if your tripod is not top-notch or if your mount is only so-so.
