@AnnaAnthro It's moments like this, that I wish Nova Scotia was just a little further north
Nova Scotia is at the same latitude as Venice and Bordeaux (I had to tell my last UK boss that we were not moving somewhere "a long way north" as they thought).

Here's NOAA's aurora forecast🔭🌌

#astrodon #aurora

A map of North America (projected as if looking at North America from space), produced by NOAA's space weather prediction centre. It shows the likelihood of an aurora appearing in different places. Almost the whole of Canada is red (highest likelihood). Vancouver is pale green (low likelihood). Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Ellesmere Island have no likelihood of an aurora appearing.

After the watch reported above the Sun produced an M9.8 solar flare at 1950Z on 30Nov2023.
The flare produced a fast moving coronal mass emission (#CME) directed at Earth.
This CME is predicted to overtake the earlier ones and combine to hit Earth at around 0600Z 1Dec2023.
The predicted plasma density is very high so New Zealanders may see #aurora after sunset tomorrow night.

NORTHERN LIGHTS POSSIBLE:

Thanks to the latest #solar #flare from the Sun earlier this week, the #Northern #Lights will be quite strong the next several nights.

The #Northland will have some #clouds at times, but there should be some decent #viewing opportunities, especially when the #Aurora #Borealis peaks Thursday night.

The Aurora Forecast for North America shows a minor geomagnetic storm with a K index of 5 for Wednesday night, and a strong storm with a K index of 7 for Thursday night. It becomes weak starting Friday. The stronger the geomagnetic storm, the more likely the Northern Lights will be visible over the Lower 48 states.
For Wednesday night, the Northern Lights will be likely over the northern horizon of the Northland.

Yesterday's solar flare launched a CME that is visible in this Nasa/SDO video, filtered to show the solar atmosphere.

Solar active region "AR3500" erupted with a moderate M9.8 (that's almost an "X") flare yesterday evening. This active region is facing directly towards Earth, and a CME was detected which is *predicted* to reach us around midday on Dec 1st. Two smaller CMEs are already en-route which will start to affect us from the 29th.

Dr Tamitha Skov is predicting geomagnetic levels of G3 to G4 on Dec 1st. There shouldn't be any danger to infrastructure at these levels although some poorly shielded satellites could be at risk.

The attached video from NASA/SDO is filtered to show the sun's atmosphere (AIA211). The large dark patch on the left is a large coronal hole which will be leaking the solar wind into space. We will feel the effects of this coronal in the few days following the CME.

These magnificent purple and green lights aren’t auroras.

#SAID refers to a narrow flow of charged particles in Earth’s upper atmosphere. Researchers already knew that SAID existed, MacDonald said, but they did not know that it might occasionally be visible.

#STEVE is visually different from auroras, which are caused by electrically charged particles that glow when they interact with the atmosphere”

Last night was a delightfully pointless road trip with @bright_helpings

I heard about the #AuroraBorealis being particularly strong and visible across the UK that night. Aware of the full moon, I cross referenced a map of stargazing sites with cloud coverage to try and find somewhere cloud-free, and came up with Malham, a Dark Skies Discovery Site.

We drove there fuelled by #BBCRadio1 dance anthems and talking nonsense at each other. By the time we arrived, there was a light cloud cover, enough for the full moon to drown out the sky, so there was no chance of seeing the #aurora. Plus it turns out the site is south-facing.

We did see a lovely #MoonHalo, but so did @hag back home while walking Gary! After a while in the literally freezing car park, we headed home. The journey was more important than the destination and it was good to get E out of the house for a while and spend some time together.

The moon, slightly fuzzy behind minimal cloud. There's a bright ring of light around it.

Last night, the Aurora appeared over the north of Scotland. An almost full moon and plenty of cloud made photography conditions fairly difficult, but that’s part of the fun of Aurora photography. This shot looks north from the Black Isle towards the Cromarty Firth and Easter Ross.

#aurora #auroraphotography #lovescotland #scottishphotography #landscapephotography

A green Aurora appears over a dark hilly landscape in the north of Scotland. The Cromarty Firth reflects some of the green light whilst the lights of coastal towns provide some detail in the shadows. Clouds dominate the sky and the full moon provides plenty of light washing out some of the brightness of the Aurora. However, just above the clouds, a green Aurora shows through.

Aurora’s up again in Scotland this evening. Unfortunately for me, there’s plenty of cloud. Still, the aurora is strong enough to light up the cloud from above and provide some green contrast to the yellow light pollution from the local towns just north of the Black Isle.

#aurora #scottishaurora #auroraphotography #blackisle

A green aurora appears in the cloudy night sky above the Scottish highlands. A green grassy field fills the lower third of the scene. In the distance, small towns cast yellow light upon the clouds with mountains just visible in the distance. At the top of the image, a green aurora is visible in breaks in the cloud, but also lights the cloud from above. A yellow and green scene overall.
