Well, foo. Now that the geomagnetic storm is getting stronger, the clouds have rolled in. No #aurora viewing here tonight.
@AnnaAnthro It's moments like this, that I wish Nova Scotia was just a little further north
Nova Scotia is at the same latitude as Venice and Bordeaux (I had to tell my last UK boss that we were not moving somewhere "a long way north" as they thought).
Here's NOAA's aurora forecast🔭🌌
Northern lights in Massachusetts: When to See the Auroras in the Sky: Northern lights may be visible in New England overnight due to a strong geomagnetic storm. Expect more sightings through 2025. https://shut.net/2023/12/01/news-northern-lights-in-massachusetts-when-to-see-the-auroras-in-the-sky?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon #NewEngland #Earth #Nightsky #NewHampshire #Aurora
Powerful 'Cannibal' solar burst will hit Earth tonight. Widespread auroras predicted | Space https://www.space.com/cannibal-cme-solar-outburst-will-hit-earth-dec-1-2023-triggering-auroras
Let's hope for some cloud gaps tomorrow. A geomagnetic storm is predicted and auroras might be visible even further south in Europe.
A huge solar flare (M9.8) was observed on Nov 28 and is heading towards the Earth. It's expected to arrive at Earth on Dec 1st ~07:00 UTC. This will likely mean aurorae will be visible at high to mid latitudes on both hemispheres.

Here the experimental #aurora dashboard
Let's not hype this up too much, but there is the possibility that the Northern Lights may be visible in CT tonight and over the next few nights because Earth could experience a strong (G3) geomagnetic storm this week. We recommend taking some time to look and see if something shows up on your camera you may not see with the naked eye. https://www.spaceweather.com has updates

NOAA SWPC has updated the CME predictions to include no less than four CMEs which are due to arrive in the next couple of days.
"With 3 CMEs already inbound, the addition of a 4th, full halo CME has prompted SWPC forecasters to upgrade the G2 Watch on 01 Dec to a G3 Watch. This faster-moving halo CME is progged to merge with 2 of the 3 upstream CMEs, all arriving at Earth on 01 Dec. G3 (Strong) conditions are now likely on 01 Dec."
✨ The aurora may become visible under clear skies across parts of northern Scotland overnight tonight

Aurora Viewline for Nov 30 night in N. America.
Strong auroras likely as powerful solar flare eruption hurls possible 'cannibal CME' toward Earth (video)
After the watch reported above the Sun produced an M9.8 solar flare at 1950Z on 30Nov2023.
The flare produced a fast moving coronal mass emission (#CME) directed at Earth.
This CME is predicted to overtake the earlier ones and combine to hit Earth at around 0600Z 1Dec2023.
The predicted plasma density is very high so New Zealanders may see #aurora after sunset tomorrow night.
NORTHERN LIGHTS POSSIBLE:
According to the #Aurora Dashboard, tomorrow night might be a banger for sky watchers.
Of course here in the PNW, where we've had clear skies for a week, it's clouding up; with rain and snow in the forecast.
Heads up, friends.
A Class 4 Geomagnetic storm is headed our way for end of this week! There should be lots of nice aurora, even getting to mid-latitudes.
If you get to a dark sky, and have a phone that can do 30-sec exposures, you should be able to catch them. Point towards the N/S poles.

huh. i guess get your ez aurora propagation radio contacts while you can in the south? https://www.livescience.com/space/space-exploration/spacex-rockets-keep-tearing-blood-red-atmospheric-holes-in-the-sky-and-scientists-are-concerned
Yesterday's solar flare launched a CME that is visible in this Nasa/SDO video, filtered to show the solar atmosphere.
Solar active region "AR3500" erupted with a moderate M9.8 (that's almost an "X") flare yesterday evening. This active region is facing directly towards Earth, and a CME was detected which is *predicted* to reach us around midday on Dec 1st. Two smaller CMEs are already en-route which will start to affect us from the 29th.
Dr Tamitha Skov is predicting geomagnetic levels of G3 to G4 on Dec 1st. There shouldn't be any danger to infrastructure at these levels although some poorly shielded satellites could be at risk.
The attached video from NASA/SDO is filtered to show the sun's atmosphere (AIA211). The large dark patch on the left is a large coronal hole which will be leaking the solar wind into space. We will feel the effects of this coronal in the few days following the CME.
These magnificent purple and green lights aren’t auroras.
“#SAID refers to a narrow flow of charged particles in Earth’s upper atmosphere. Researchers already knew that SAID existed, MacDonald said, but they did not know that it might occasionally be visible.
#STEVE is visually different from auroras, which are caused by electrically charged particles that glow when they interact with the atmosphere”
ISSUED AT 0653 UT ON 29 Nov 2023
AUSTRALIAN SPACE WEATHER FORECASTING CENTRE
Several coronal mass ejections are expected to impact the Earth within the next 48 hours, over UT days 30-Nov and 01-Dec.
This may possibly result in significant geomagnetic activity and visible auroras during local nighttime hours for these days.
Auroras may be seen in high and
middle latitude locations
Aurora alerts will follow if significant geomagnetic activity actually occurs.

One of the best night rides I've had, riding back from Peebles on Sat night. Well below 0c. Water bottles frozen. Crystal clear and moonlit night. Some nice aurora for a few minutes at a time! Didn't meet a single other person on the trails, only some owls and a stoat. #Mountainbiking #frozen #aurora

Last night was a delightfully pointless road trip with @bright_helpings
I heard about the #AuroraBorealis being particularly strong and visible across the UK that night. Aware of the full moon, I cross referenced a map of stargazing sites with cloud coverage to try and find somewhere cloud-free, and came up with Malham, a Dark Skies Discovery Site.
We drove there fuelled by #BBCRadio1 dance anthems and talking nonsense at each other. By the time we arrived, there was a light cloud cover, enough for the full moon to drown out the sky, so there was no chance of seeing the #aurora. Plus it turns out the site is south-facing.
We did see a lovely #MoonHalo, but so did @hag back home while walking Gary! After a while in the literally freezing car park, we headed home. The journey was more important than the destination and it was good to get E out of the house for a while and spend some time together.
Last night, the Aurora appeared over the north of Scotland. An almost full moon and plenty of cloud made photography conditions fairly difficult, but that’s part of the fun of Aurora photography. This shot looks north from the Black Isle towards the Cromarty Firth and Easter Ross.
Did you manage to see the #Aurora last night?
Edward sure did! 👀

Sometimes you just gotta sit on a bench beside the Observatory, eating fish & chips from a favoured chippy (Stefano's on Morningside Road) in a chilly -1ºC under light of a full moon whilst watching the remains of an aurora display as Orion rises.

Looking for recommendations for #tripod and tripod-adapter solutions for my Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro phone, preferably something I don't need to remove my wallet case for to use.
Currently using said wallet case to sort of balance my phone at an angle to capture #auroraBorealis aka #northernLights, but the case itself isn't very solid and only has a couple of angles where it stays in place, and it relies on having a flat surface to place it on.
A Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) that left the Sun late on the 22nd November is expected to arrive this evening and overnight
#Aurora may become visible across parts of northern Scotland and similar latitudes, dependent on the exact timing of the arrival of the enhancements

ANOTHER CME IS HEADING FOR EARTH: An eruption on the sun yesterday hurled a #CME directly toward Earth. #NOAA and #NASA models agree that it will reach our planet during the late hours of Saturday, Nov. 11th. The impact could produce a G2-class (Moderate) geomagnetic storm with #aurora in northern-tier US states. https://spaceweather.com for details.
Finally got a chance to process some of my images from the w’end in dark skies - Aurora Australis!
Captured the pretty dazzling lights of excited high-altitude oxygen for the first time. It was spectacular.
A reminder that Earth really is the best spaceship we have. And we should care for it.
Wait for it…! Incredible #aurora witnessed by pilots of an Air Portugal night flight from San Francisco to Lisbon 🤩💚

A GLOBAL OUTBREAK OF RED 'SAR ARCS': A #CME struck Earth on Nov. 5th, springing a leak in our planet's electrical ring current system. The result was a global outbreak of red lights in the sky called '#SAR arcs.' They looked like #aurora, but they were not. Get the full story on today's edition of https://spaceweather.com

Last night, at about 11pm, I checked the Aurora app and there was a non-zero chance of seeing the southern lights, so we took a drive out of Launceston to the south to see if we could spot anything.
Alas, nothing could be seen with the naked eye, but I set up the camera anyway, and tried a couple of shots.
IT WAS THERE!
I even captured some meteors in one of the shots.
#Aurora tonight from Silver Lake NH. Only seen in photos. In this case with a Pixel 6 in Astrophotography mode. Works remarkably well.
Aurora’s up again in Scotland this evening. Unfortunately for me, there’s plenty of cloud. Still, the aurora is strong enough to light up the cloud from above and provide some green contrast to the yellow light pollution from the local towns just north of the Black Isle.
