Came over to see if there was any food…or crumbs at least, I suspect.

Sorry little fella. None today.

#Australia’s Crackdown on #Climate Activists
It is critically important for citizens to be able to express their concern about the climate emergency in whatever peaceful way they would like to do so.

The second meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) of the Plastics Treaty is taking place from 29 May – 2 June 2023 in Paris, France under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The aim is to complete negotiations by the end of 2024 and create a global, legally binding plastics treaty.

I'll be focussing on Australia's positions at INC2. Australia's Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek is attending the conference, representing Australia.

The blogpost will be updated frequently over the next week as negotiations proceed.

These #jadeplant’s do flower!!

We’ll these healthy, ground dwellers do anyways.

Known as lucky plant, money plant or money tree, it is a succulent plant with small pink or white flowers that are native to the KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa, and Mozambique; it is common as a houseplant worldwide.

My houseplant doesn’t flower. Probably because it is root bound and old as heck.

These pink flowers are delightful.

Here's the latest variant picture for the Northern Territory, Australia.

After a gap of over a year, a couple of samples were recently shared from the NT.

The 2 samples are variants that are common elsewhere in Australia - XBB.1.16.* "Arcturus" and XBB.1.5.* "Kraken".

I've been banging on about this for over a year now, so it's great to see data sharing restart. Hopefully that can continue so we get a more accurate picture of the unique mix in this remote area with international air and sea ports.

#MaidOfTheMist or the #Gladiolus dalenii is a flowering plant in the iris family.

I’ve driven past the front garden where these are growing all week, and haven’t been able to stop. But today I made an exception and disregarded the steady falling rain to snap a few pics to share.

So glad I did because up close they’re just stunning.

These (pictured) are one of the most widely distributed species of Gladiolus, ranging from eastern South Africa and Madagascar throughout tropical Africa and into western Arabia.

This garden has heaps. And the colours are dynamic and bright.

Here's an update on my metric for Australia and it's states and territories:

"Days since Health Leadership faced the public on COVID".

I'm tracking the last date that CMOs/CHOs etc in each jurisdiction last held a press conference or similar and took questions from the media on COVID.

NSW was the only jurisdiction to have an event of that type in the last week.

The ongoing, fairly regular events like this in some jurisdiction serve to highlight even more those that are not stepping up. Why do only residents of NSW deserve clear and urgent communication from their health leadership?

About ten distinct leaves in the foreground and a mass of foliage; leaves and branches blurred in the background with patches of light blue sky.

Each leaf has I believe five to six individual fingers (portions), medium sized growths, spanning outward from the middle part, that end at a point at the tip. Each leaf is around 100 millimetres (4 inches in diameter).

The general colour of the leaves range between yellow, a handful display in light green, burnt orange and light red. They appear bright as the morning sun is shining from the back of the photographer and onto the leaf surface. They’re truly gorgeous.

Hello. I recently took a look at the works being done at the #AustralianWarMemorial and you might be interested in these photos. Sharing without comment on the merits or otherwise of what's underway.

Looking up #AnzacParade to the Memorial, a large crane breaks the view of Mount Ainslie behind it. Street level at the top of the Parade is a wide stretch of scaffolding covered by an image of the building's usual front vista.

From the lookout at Mount Ainslie some of the ground works being hidden by the scaffolding are visible.

Including a classic view looking down from Mount Ainslie, along the Parade and across the lake to old and new parliament houses and other national buildings in the parliamentary triangle. Stunning.

Australian COVID-19 stats update for the week ending 23 May 2023:

Starting from this week, I'm switching the data source for this analysis to the health.gov.au stats, made available thanks to an incredible citizen data science effort by "dbRaevn", which they described on this thread:
https://twitter.com/dbRaevn/status/1656878815296233472

Here's the main page hosting the data and info collected by dbRaevn
https://github.com/dbRaevn/covid19/tree/main/pandemic

This is clearly a huge effort - making crucial government data accessible and useful. Please take a minute to buy dbRaevn a coffee if you are able to - see the "Support my work" link on their github page.

Although health.gov.au stats lag the traditional reported cases by a day or so, they provide a much more complete picture, with daily detail on most stats, and whole new topics to explore like Aged Care and Treatments (see below).

Reminder that we have literally zero idea what the actual covid case numbers are in Australia as most people aren't testing if they have symptoms, and most of those who do test positive aren't recording their results with official records.

So when you read about the increases and the new peak were entering in time for winter, that's only a tiny fraction of what's out there.

So please, please, put on a fucking mask.

I just love this mural. I’ve posted some time ago, but can’t get enough of it

Found it again in my travels recently.

The #rosella is astonishingly good. So too the #wombat to the right of scene in the second pic.

Painted by HaydenDewar.com in 2019, this scene complements another painted on brick, just off Acland Street in StKilda. It has the same humanoid figures and #Australiana themes.

I’ll visit that and feature it here, sometime in the not too distant future.

This mural (pictured in this post) however, is located in #Bentleigh #Australia.

Gorgeous, and intriguing huh?

#altext first pic 👇

This scene takes in a portion of a larger mural (around 20 metres wide) on a brick wall. This section of the scene is around 4 metres wide by 4 metres high, with a vibrant rosella mid flight, tilted slightly flying from left to right, zooming through the air.

The bird is looking at the observer (the camera) almost with human intelligence in its eye. Has various blue coloured wings, spread wide and individual / distinct feathers showing. Great painted detail. Very detailed.

Its back and body is adorned with red and a bit of black individual feathers and it’s head is red, darker blue chin, grey curved beak and black eye.

It’s a side shot and the bird almost has what appears to be a grin… most certainly has a cheeky look in its eye.

Riding on its back (closer to its neck) is a slim and slender humanoid woman (has breasts) in a teal
Coloured skin suit.

The woman has flowing blonde hair, flowing in the wind, but no face. It looks like a light brown (perhaps skin tone) disc, for a face.

It is a real fun scene.

It's an unusual lens the 60-600mm, and I'll be writing a lot more about it on the blog soon. I've spent the just 5 years shooting telephoto in the G9 with effectively 800mm, so stepping back into full frame telephoto was a bit of a shock for me! The results were amazing though.

#WildOZ #BirdPhotography #Lumix #SigmaPhoto #Australia

Every so often the ability to zoom back on the 60-600mm was genuinely valuable.
Can't go home without a decent kingfisher photo!
On wetlands cruises I'm sitting at the back of the boat so my guests get the better view. I still get plenty of opportunities though, and having a light but sturdy tripod takes the weight off my arms. I loosen off the ball head when following subjects through the lens, but sometimes I still lift it and shoot handheld for very fast moving birds like the whiskered tern.
Magpie Geese flocking over the wetlands of Arnhem.

About twice a year I get a chance to go shooting wildlife. I'm relatively inexperienced compared to real wildlife photographers. And yet the results I get from a few days in Arhemland carrying a Sigma 60-600mm and the LUMIX S5II were incredibly rewarding.

Having great people on the ground helps. Also cameras are getting crazy good these days. Using a tripod to carry the weight of this telephoto in the boat was great too.

#WildOZ #BirdPhotography #Lumix #SigmaPhoto #Australia

Female black necked stork (formerly known as the Jabiru) snapping up breakfast in Arhemland.
This is the Sigma 60-600mm mounted on my tripod with it's lens collar, using the built-in arcaswiss plate. LUMIX S5II was a perfect match for this lens.

Available in L-mount and FE.
Wouldn't be a trip to Arhemland without the obligatory shot of a white bellied sea eagle taking off.
Mental note for future attempts to capture terns in flight... 1/800th of a second is too slow most of the time! Then AF was getting the shot right about 75% of the time though. Hardest part is just finding them in the frame at 600mm.

Star trail over Boab.

This is a stacked image that uses a sequence of shots to capture the movement of the stars. I'm using what I call the "bright frame" technique where I compose and capture a silhouette at sunset, facing to the west, then leave the camera in place to record the stars moving around it.

You don't even need a super fast lens to get a result. See my website for a full explanation!

Would be great if you could sign this petition to increase research scholarship rates for PhD students in Australia, so that they’re paid minimum wage.

This is a small step towards properly funding and compensating the people who make massive contributions to Australian research outputs.

Bon Scott's pre-AC/DC bandmate remembers their wild times: “We nicknamed him Road-Test Ronnie. He tried it all!”
AC/DC's former frontman Bon Scott was also, apparently, a talented marriage counsellor

ChatGPT making things up about the article:
This article looks at the early life of AC/DC's legendary frontman, Bon Scott. Born in Scotland in 1946, Scott moved to Australia as a child and began his singing career in the late 1960s. His style was a combination of heavy metal and rock ‘n’ roll that became the hallmarks of AC/DC. He performed with various bands and achieved success with Fraternity before joining AC/DC in 1974. Scott's unique vocals and powerful stage presence made him an icon of rock music and ensured his legacy as an important influence in the history of hard rock. He died tragically in 1980 and, despite his short career, will always be remembered as one of the most iconic lead singers in music history.

"A cluster of giant mushrooms has popped up at Cockatoo Lake Recreation Reserve near Naracoorte in regional South Australia to the delight of residents.

The mushrooms are believed to be large boletes, Phlebopus marginatus, which are not commonly reported in regional South Australia.

Boletes are considered to be Australia's largest terrestrial mushroom and usually appear after soaking rains during autumn." #Australia #SouthAustralia #mushrooms #fungi #Naracoorte #boletes

Stan Grant from the #abc has dropped his many roles due to the persistent racism of the #abc and Australia's toxic media in general.

I have often whined about #QandA on the basis of his journalism. Never because of his race.

#Australia is a money cuntry populated by old white men with no ability, no vision and no idea.

I salute #StanGrant for not putting up with this bullshit.

"A new report by the #Australia Institute found #subsidies for #FossiFuel giants in federal and state budgets will soon cost #taxpayers 14 times more than the Disaster Ready Fund."

“Australian governments are now planning to spend more on exacerbating #ClimateChange through these subsidies than they are on getting ready for #climate #disasters.”

That does not sound like a smart policy.

Stan Grant will walk away from Q&A because no one at ABC has spoken in his favor.

In a democratic country people should have the right to speak their mind freely.

You'd have to question the training of NSW #police that a senior cuntstable with 12 years experience would find it okay in his tiny little mind to #Taser a 95 year old woman approaching him slowly using a walking frame and #armed with a steak #knife

#ClareKnowland might weight 50kgs dripping wet and it's believed she has dementia.

Seriously in what universe does this even make sense? It makes more sense every time someone says all cops are cvnts.

Please boost the shit out of this.

STORIES OF THE MOUNTAINS…
Mt Warning in far norhtern NSW is the first point of the Australian mainland to be touched by the sun.

So-named by navigator James Cook in 1770, the peak is the core of an ancient shield volcano clad in rainforest.

The peak dominates the skyline. It is seen here from the town of Byron Bay, looking north.
