I've been taking a little break from building but today I went through the rest of my tailcone kit and figured out what should be replaced per Van's recommendations. My scrap pile got big enough I moved it to some corner of a my basement to forget about for a while. For parts I had already used, I tried my best to determine if they were laser cut or not based on pictures I had. If I couldn't tell, I decided to go with an abundance of caution and replace them anyway. I basically have to rebuild the entire vertical stabilizer and I'm an very not thrilled about it. Both the spars need to be replaced inside of it and that is a lot of rivets to drill out.

TIL that famed banjo player Earl Scruggs was a pilot and once survived a crashing his own plane with only a broken leg. I thought to myself - oh, surely that’s the basis for that Columbo episode in which Johnny Cash plays a country singer / pilot who covers up a murder by jumping out of his own plane with a parachute and pretending he was thrown clear of the wreck with just a broken leg. BUT NO, it is not art imitates life! The Columbo episode aired in March 1974 and the Scruggs crash was in October 1975. This hour’s random desktop background on my #MacbookPro is of Puddles, the University of Oregon Ducks mascot, after his flight with me and other media peeps on the #EAA B-17 “Aluminum Overcast” when the tour stopped in Eugene. I was the media rep for our chapter, and when 2 people dropped out of the media flight, a chapter member made a call and Puddles and his handler joined the flight.
It is not every day you see a giant Duck getting strapped into a B-17.
Looks like that situation under control, but it was exciting there at #LAX for awhile. Possible(?) fuel leak on a Southwest Airlines flight. #SWA #aviation #emergency

Not perfect, but acceptable. More than capable for the load they’ll carry (they’ll secure the bolt that’ll hold the shoulder braces of the safety harnesses) and where the load will be.
Definitely getting nutplate jigs for the future 80-some-odd nutplates I’ll be making for this project.

Made my first nutplate today! Including my first ever rivets!
I cut the aluminum and drilled it using my new drill press. I riveted the nut holder to the plate using a vise (I have a squeezer on order). Came out well enough for something intended to prevent the nut holder from turning.
This part is meant for practice and won’t be used on the airplane. Amongst other issues, I didn’t drill the center hole wide enough for the actual bolt.

I have always thought that “punching out” is only done when a crash is imminent.
So if this F-35 was capable of flying about 60 more miles on autopilot, why did the highly-trained pilot eject? I read he was near both JB Charleston and KCHS, so he shoulda had options.
And why was it left on autopilot?

For the 1000th time, no, you don't "fly more sustainably" by planting a couple trees. And it's rather telling that 100% #SAF isn't even available as one of the main options.
Hate to tell ya, but a transatlantic flight with SAF costs at least ~€600 more than your regular ticket. Yes, SAFs should be mandated, now. And yeah that means more expensive plane tickets.

Tonight we were wondering why nobody had identified the flight which caused the UK air traffic control crash so we worked it out. It was FBU (French Bee) 731 from LAX/KLAX to ORY/LFPO.
It passed two waypoints called DVL on its expanded flight plan: Devil's Lake, Wisconsin, US, and Deauville, Normandy, FR (an intermediate on airway UN859).

Many of us have been saying this all along to people who keep insisting on coming up with excuses not to take #action to stop #ClimateChange: if humans do not make the changes urgently needed on a voluntary basis, then #Nature will force those changes on us anyway.
