"A once thriving language passed down by #Qualicum First Nation members for thousands of years then faded into dormancy until now. Considered a 'sleeping language' since the 1940s, the #BC government has officially recognized pentl’ach as the 35th #FirstNation #language in the province... 'It is a linguistics project, but it’s also a healing and re-strengthening and reconnecting project for our community'." #Indigenous #Canada #Nanaimo #VancouverIsland
It was deemed extinct. But now pentl'ach has been declared a living language in #bc
“The reclassification of pentl'ach and its addition to B.C.'s official list of #indigenous languages, was the result of linguistic and admin work by the #Qualicum First Nation, with support from the First Peoples' Cultural Council.”
A local First Nations language that was almost gone, has been recovered after some amazing and dedicated work. Welcome back pentl'ach (pronounced "PUNT-lutch”)
The most common reference English speakers in this area will have to the language is the name of the "Puntledge" river near Courtenay, BC.

Sick of hearing our current #governments blame almost everything on past governments. They've had years to change old #StatusQuo but didn't do it. We are living under freaking #neoliberalism in #BC & #Canada now. I fucking hate it.
These failures in government can keep blaming past governments or step the heck up harder & not act like past govt leaders here(and elsewhere!) or learn to #STFU if they're treating #citizens like we don't matter - just like past govts.
Handy but it would be nice if it served the #Nanaimo end of the ferry routes as well.

Not a seaweed, eelgrass is a flowering plant. It has roots and requires sunlight to grow, which is why it regularly appears close to shore. Its roots sequester carbon and mitigate sediment erosion, which protects the shoreline in the event of a storm.
Eelgrass accounts for up to 18 per cent of carbon sucked up into world oceans. They absorb carbon about 35 per cent faster than tropical forests.
I just tried and failed to get my 8yo kid into a doctor's office. And I want to talk about that.
It CAN work. I've also lived in Strasbourg, France. And in comparison, there my kid would have seen a pediatrician within hours of a call.
This failure is a POLICY CHOICE by authorities. Not some impossible social hurdle.

@dyckron Wow...The UCP making it official that politicians will be making health care decisions. I feel terrible for Albertans. And I'm not gonna lie, I'm glad I'm not there. We have a lot of problems in #BC, but not to this extent.
I am starting to hear of health care workers looking to leave #Alberta, maybe this will be a win for other provinces
Wow. It's official. It has been a year since I discovered #Mastodon and the #fediverse. I still have a bit of that 1990s web feeling of pure, self directed, discovery. It is why this place is conpelling. I am also so grateful for having connected with such a great group of new friends.
This year I *will* convince more people to come here and stay and I will build places for people to do that. Plans are already in the works. I want my real life community in #PortAlberni and #VancouverIsland and #BC to discover this place. I want it to be the place for immediate news to appear on, for government orgs to post updates, for people to rely on.
Could I ask members of the Fediverse in Vancouver a favour?
Could you take a moment to share with folks not on the Fediverse that I will be hosting a "masterclass" to help people onboard onto the Fediverse.
It was inspired by @reiver's idea of a Fediverse JoinFest.

Story from my hospitals in #BC: last week, maybe 5% of workers were masking. Even though everyone knew that everyone is sick right now. But no one wanted to be the one to stand out. NO ONE.
This week, all it took was for someone in leadership to say that it's mandated that you mask, and now compliance is almost 100% and no one is complaining, NO ONE ...1/?

A court has given British Columbia 18 months to change its mineral staking regime to ensure that consultation with Indigenous nations is done prior to transferring away their rights to minerals to a third party, as the process is now.
