Ok a couple things going on in #StarTrek #LowerDecks
1. Vulcan crew member T’Lyn is 62 years old. She has a Pon Farr coming up soon.
2. The Romulans are going off to lurk in Sector 87. Wait did they just make a #Babylon5 reference in Trek?!?

Rewatching #Babylon5 for the nth time and every time through I'm more impressed by the misdirection in s2e3 "The Geometry of Shadows."

You're supposed to think the Technomages are important. Their plot with Londo and Sheridan is the Human Dude plot, it's obviously the A story.

Meanwhile Ivanova and the Drazi are playing the entire series arc in small scale right in front of you and you think it's a comic throwaway.

Huh the next episode of
#StarTrekLowerDecks, 'Empathological Fallacies'.

Sounds a little like the #Babylon5 episode, "Soul Mates," where Lando's three wives comes to visit him. 🤔

S1E02 “Soul Hunter” felt a lot like season 1 of TNG or DS9 — vaguely interesting sci-fi concept, but low production values and mediocre storytelling.

Not awful, but not exciting to watch either.

@cynical13 @chucker If your curious about why #Babylon5’s pilot was strange, it’s this (at least this is my understanding based on what the B5 creator has said):

Most series have a pilot made, and the network gives a go/no-go once its execs see it. So there’s fairly little delay between finishing the pilot and starting the series.

(In #StarTrek, if you ignore “The Cage”, that’s exactly what happened: The network received “Where No Man Has Gone Before” and ordered a full season, so “Where No Man” wasn’t even the first episode aired.)

With B5 they made the pilot, and then the network decided they wanted to schedule it, broadcast it, and see the ratings before they decided. So that took, like, a year? And *then* they started making the series. By which time some cast members had moved on (and it’s possible the network directed them to make other changes).

(I’m sure someone will chime in if I’ve gotten something wrong here.)

@chucker

The 90 minute #Babylon5 pilot was shown quite some time (year?) ahead of the premiere of the show.

I strongly recommend it as it sets up the entire story cycle.

The principal actor suffered major health problems after that, impairing his season one performance, leading to a departure.

A change in first officer after the pilot but that’s the only major change then, although there were new characters introduced as main and recurring throughout seasons one and two.

Michael Rawdon

@cynical13 @chucker Yep, exactly that.

The #Babylon5 pilot is pretty good, and is a fairly chunky story on its own, albeit with a fair amount of exposition. Also if you enjoy seeing how a show changes between pilot and series, it’s a good example - albeit less radical than #StarTrek’s two pilots. Both shows had very unusual gestations - most shows don’t change nearly that much from their pilots.

But the pilot is not essential viewing, as all of its key story points are reiterated in the first season. The first episode begins the slow burn of the overall story, which comes in small bits at first (much of the first season is set-up), gets moving at the end of the first season, and then the tables get flipped in the second.

@AlsoPaisleyCat @triptych Now I’m thinking I need to take a week and write my #Space1999 reboot screenplay. I think I figured out how to make the premise not stupid, and also suggest a story arc, #Babylon5-style.

No one would ever make it, of course, and I’m not a screenwriter, but maybe other fans would enjoy it.

One thing I appreciate about #Babylon5 is that the #earthlings accept that they are not the most advanced beings in the #universe, disappointing is the fact that all the #civilizations, even the most advanced ones, still seem to believe in #religion

It's quite a big contrast with #StarTrek were the humans are thriving really good.

In comparison, in #Babylon5 the humans are the losing camp of the war. They were completely losing it if the Minbari didn't stop unexpectedly

Cecile is a rando

#Babylon5 starts at the end of a war: the Minbari are destroying the humans pretty bad but then they noticed their own population is shrinking and they are actually losing "souls" to the humans. They realized they were literally killing themselves because in the end, I guess, we're just one and the same. So they stopped and made peace

Yesterday, a 30-year-old sci-fi TV series (#Babylon5) gave me an idea for a better Siri voice command: I had used “lights on” and “lights off” until I noticed that in that show, they only said “lights” to toggle between on and off. Lo and behold, that also works with Siri. 😀

1/ #Babylon5: I’m currently rewatching it, with the help of this guide: http://jasonshankel.net/menu-movie-tv-reviews/88-movie-review-babylon5-essential

I’m very much enjoying it but I’m also looking forward to the reboot (*):
– The original’s creator will do it.
– Plot and world-building are awesome and will stay the same.
– The writing has aged a little bit and will profit from an update.
– Better production values (incl. CGI) will also help.

(*) As of 2023-08-29, a reboot is likely, due to the success of the recent movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIFNa42Mmck

I binged season 1 of Babylon 5 within 3 days. Some things jumped out to me, but I won't talk about them here. Maybe once I'm through the whole series, maybe never.

Anyway, here are some other things:

I loved Londo, Sinclair, Ivanova, and Delenn a lot. (Though I'm not sure I can forgive Londo.)

I loved seeing so many familiar faces (e.g. boy, I didn't know how handsome Jeffrey Combs was!) and names (D. C. Fontana!).

I tried to like Garibaldi, but he's far too quick to use violence for my taste, as the security chief and all.

I like the setting of a space station a lot. Always have (big DS9 fan). To have ambassadors there that play big roles in the story, and that all have their very own agenda, is really nice. I like how different they are. None is a clear ally to anyone, but none is a typical bad guy either.

I'm gonna miss Sinclair. But I read he will come back a couple times. Looking forward to it.

I won't zoom through the rest of show as quickly as I did with season 1. But I will absolutely continue to watch.

We did watch the “making of” extra on the blu-ray. JMS mentions that the closing scene is a sort of reboot, but it’s unclear whether it’s THE reboot on hold at the CW due to the writer’s strike, or if it’s a reboot they might follow up on if there are more animated movies.

I hope it’s neither of these.

If they do more animated movies I’d rather have them fill in more of the post-series continuity. Not that I want them to do Crusade, but just have it’s own storyline extending the universe we know.

By contrast for the reboot I was pretty stoked that it would be a completely separate continuity and really a reimagining of the show. Not an alternate reality of the original show where we’re constantly wondering about bits of continuity which should also be present there but somehow just aren’t.

But if it’s going to be one or the other, I’d rather have it be the first one, because I’d be much more invested in a reboot which is a true reimagining.
