Random fact I just learned: Rihanna isn't the first Bajan to perform at the SuperBowl. The Merrymen performed at halftime for SuperBowl XII in 1979. 🤯 #sports #Caribbean #Barbados
Powdery white sand and turquoise water. Plus a few bars, restaurants, and hotels just to keep things lively. That's #Barbados.
More values from the 1953 pictorial set, with a portrait of the young Queen Elizabeth II. Engraved and printed in two colors.
- 4 cents statue of Horatio Nelson, unused
- 8 cents inter colonial schooner, with 1955 circular date stamp from St. George
- 12 cents flying fish, with 1950s airmail circular date stamp from General Post Office, Bridgetown

In 1953, a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II replaced that of her father George VI on the same set of engraved pictorial stamps. Here are the lowest three values in the set.
- 1 cent cannons at Dover Fort, Speightstown, unused
- 2 cents Sugar Cane Breeding, used without visible cancel
- 3 cents Public Buildings (also known as Parliament Buildings) at Bridgetown, Barbados, unused

The only stamp from the 1950 pictorial definitive set that I have is the 12 cents Flying Fish. One of the oddest looking stamps ever...
An engraved stamp, printed in two colors, olive and aqua. Each stamp in the set features a portrait of King George VI.
Tomorrow, I'll share a few stamps from a similar set with portraits of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

A small paper but one about a place very close to my heart. I love #Barbados for many reasons. Over 20+ years of running workshops, I have watched the #BellairsResearchInstitute reef slowly die. I still remember my first year there, surfing on the small break with my PhD supervisor Mike Fellows just before sunset, looking down in the water filled with clouds of fish and sometimes even turtles. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00338-022-02330-y
The last stamps I have to share from the 1938-1947 colonial seal set are two color varieties of the 1 shilling value. The perforations of both measure 13 1/2 x 13.
- Scott # 200 brown olive, with partial "Air Mail" cancel
- Scott # 200a olive green, used with a faint cancellation.

Next up from the 1938-1947 series, the four pence value.
The Scott Standard Catalogue lists two perforation varieties for this stamp.
I have the more common perf. 13 1/2 x 13 variety, Scott # 198.
Postmark is from the General Post Office at Bridgetown, Barbados - the capital city.

Next up from the 1938-1947 series, the three pence value.
The Scott Standard Catalogue list brown and deep blue versions of this stamp, with two perforation varieties for the brown stamp.
I have an unused copy of the 1938 perf. 14 variety, Scott 197b.

Postage rates increased during World War II, requiring the addition of a new two pence stamp in 1941. The Scott Standard Catalogue lists two colors and a perforation variety for this value.
I have the 1943 bright rose red variety with perf. 14, Scott # 195Ba.
Notice the "blotchiness" of the oval numeral tablets at the lower corners.

#StampCollecting #Barbados
Next up from the 1938-1947 series, the one and one half pence value, with two perforation varietes.
- Scott # 195 red orange, perf. 13 1/2 x 13, unused
- # 195c, perf. 14 with 1945 postmark from the General Post Office at Bridgetown
- black and white image to isolate the "10 AM, 15 May, 1945" postmark

#StampCollecting #Barbados
Next up from the 1938-1947 series, two perforation varieties of the one penny green first issued in 1942. (I do not have either of the two listed varieties of the 1 penny carmine of 1938.)
- Scott # 194A perf. 14
- 194Ad perf. 13 1/2 x 13 with 1947 postmark of the General Post Office, Bridgetown
- black and white image to isolate the postmark

#StampCollecting The 1938-1947 #Barbados definitive stamps have updated the colonial seal to include King George VI as Neptune. The Scott Catalogue listing is a complicated mess with inserted numbers (with capital letter suffixes) and perforation varieties (lower case suffixes).
I'll share what I have in catalogue order. All are engraved.
First up, 193A 1/2 pence bister, perf. 13 1/2 x 13, issued in 1942

#UKGovernment and #RoyalFamily must take responsibility for their involvement in the horrendous transatlantic #SlaveTrade and its legacy of oppression and exploitation, #Barbados ambassador says.

#StampCollecting In 1920 #Barbados celebrated the victory of the Allies in WWI. Two low values from a set of 12.
A winged angel presenting the laurel wreath of victory. I enjoy the lion heads in the upper corners of the frame.
Engraved and printed in two colors. The stamps are dated 1919 but actually issued in September, 1920.
- 1/4 penny bister frame
- 1 penny orange red frame
- black and white inverted image isolating the 1921 circular date stamp and the vignette of the 1 penny value.

#StampCollecting #Barbados stamps, from 1916, the one penny carmine colonial seal definitive stamp updated: King George V is driving the seahorse chariot (with paddle wheels?)
Line engraved, in a larger size than the typographed stamps I've been sharing so far.
- the stamp: with added Latin motto, "Et penitus toto regnantes orbe britannos" ("…and Britain rules the whole world")
- closeup view of George V as Neptune
- black & white circular date stamp from 1918 (or maybe 1919)

Continuing in chronological order sharing #Barbados stamps, from 1912, the one penny carmine George V definitive stamp featuring the colonial seal with the addition of (presumably) a stalk of sugar cane added. Queen Victoria is still driving the seahorse chariot.
Letterpress or "typographed" printing.
- the stamp
- the circular date stamp showing a May, 1914 date. (image inverted to make it easier to read)

#StampCollecting Continuing in chronological order sharing #Barbados Stamps, from 1892, the one penny carmine rose colonial seal or badge for Barbados.
Letterpress or "typographed" printing.
- Queen Victoria carrying Neptune's trident and driving a shell chariot pulled by two "sea horses."
- a closeup of Queen Victoria as Neptune
- the watermark, Crown and CA (Scott Catalogue Wmk. 2)

The first #TheContinent issue of 2023 has arrived, full of the usual fascinating insights + view from #Africa. This week also on the history of #Slavery in #Barbados + the charming #Drax family, who still own a #sugar plantation on the island, where an estimated 30,000 Africans died working as #slaves.
The main scion Richard Grosvenor Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax (sic) is a British Conservative MP (Harrow, Sandhurst, Coldstream guards) worth an estimated £180 million.
Incoming mail has been sadly bereft of stamps this week, so nothing new to share.
I've been sorting some #Barbados stamps, and a few needed soaking, so I'll share a few of these this week.
First up, this from 1882, the one penny Queen Victoria definitive. Printed by what the Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue calls "typography" (better known as letterpress) in the shade of red known as "carmine rose."

"This year (1984) marks the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the formal abolition of slavery in the English-speaking Caribbean and this work is intended to commemorate the occasion.
"Comorians were skilled at developing their networks not only within the wider region but, following the European arrival in the Indian Ocean in the sixteenth century, with the wider world. Far from being forgotten outposts of a foreign colonial power, in centuries past the #Comoros were well known to Arab navigators, English civil servants and American whalers while Comorians themselves travelled to places as far afield as #Barbados, Siberia, London and Penang.

Some recent purchases. I've tried the Mezan XO before, & it makes a mean daiquiri (Jamaican #rum is awesome for mixing), but the Doorly's 8-year & #Foursquare Premise were new to me.
This Doorly's is an excellent entry-level sipper, but not as good as their 12-year. It's good in an Old Fashioned, but makes Coke taste bitter/astringent. The Premise is fine...but only after a couple drops of water. It sort of tastes like baking spices.
