... And it seems to basically confirm that it's good for everyone. Also that :
- capitalism makes it the most efficient moneywise to distribute one-shot sums than monthly checks to develop businesses ;
- stable income makes ppl happier ;
- long-term (12 y) stable income enable both thanks to self-organization ;
- it doesn't generate more addictions nor "reluctance to work".
Any surprise ?
I saw an attack article on #BasicIncome recently that a lump sum payment was better.
It was bullshit. The fascists do not want people to bootstrap themselves to better lives and organize.
"So many people who used to work for wages instead started businesses that there was less competition for wage work, and overall wages in villages rose as a result."
The 12-year #BasicIncome pilot in Kenya is resulting in tons of new businesses, higher wages, and happier less-stressed out people.

"I want us to think about what's the expense of not pulling people out of poverty, and what that costs our city," said Councilor Kendra Lara who sponsored the hearing. "We’re already paying the cost of poverty."
Kendra Lara gets it. Never talk UBI cost as if poverty is free. #BasicIncome
Ontario food banks shatter records in 2022 with demand being driven by working Canadians, finds new report
> One in six food bank visitors say they are employed, a 40 per cent jump from last year, says Feed Ontario in a new report.
Why do our political leaders think that food banks are better than increasing minimum wage or #BasicIncome?
Because they're on the side of billionaires.
@scottsantens Let's implement a universal #basicincome.
The answer to climate change and inflation is to finally acknowledge that we don't lack numbers. But the resources and energy wasted by fighting over them.
That distributing wealth is economically magnitudes cheaper and more efficient than financial warfare.

#Lanier makes a lot of great points. #AI should not be included in the circle of empathy. We fail to include fellow humans let alone a façade that is just robbing the thoughts of humans and aggregating them which might turn around and do harm to its creators.
So what after AI takes over like the #Google imagines? Mass unemployment with no basic income? #BasicIncome is not enough and the #Freemasons and #austerity / #caste system ideology just abuses and bullies people endlessly but ineffectively and counterproductively if they can get it. #UBI #notjustTV
Brian Eno believes that #basicincome symbolizes a belief in the inherent creativity of all individuals. By ensuring UBI, society can empower everyone to explore and express their creative potential. By acknowledging everyone's potential, UBI can be a tool for inclusive progress.

I don't know what's so hard to understand about this, but unconditional basic income is not about being 100% of the income you want to use to buy everything you want. It's about preventing anyone from ever having less than the amount of the #basicincome, and never having nothing.

For anyone interested in #UBI #BasicIncome the UBILab Arts & UBILab Leeds & Basic Income #Ireland are holding an online event to do with the Irish UBI trial, on December 6th.

Fans of #basicincome likely already have @scottsantens on their follows list.
I have mixed feelings about the topic, eg how it feeds the landlords and creditors, but must confess, having landed on that magical square labelled OAS/CPP and knowing that, whatever else happens or doesn't, for the moment rent and basic utilities are covered and secure (until renoviction), while temporary, it's a great relief.
But what if minimal housing+utilities was a Constitutional Right, a perk of citizenship?
Rich people would have to spend less money on theft prevention and security if people were, you know, less poor.
New from me!
A guaranteed #basicincome could be the key to eliminate #poverty in a country as rich as ours, but one of the biggest barriers to its implementation is the stigma and distrust those in poverty experience—what gives?

""When you look at a basic income, that's generally what happens. You collapse these programs so that they are able to be provided through a basic income altogether, to eliminate the complexity altogether, so people can get the support that they need," [Premier Furey] said.
The province will add a targeted basic income for people between 60 and 64 years old who are currently receiving basic monthly financial support. That amount will equal the federal seniors' benefits and provide higher monthly incomes through a single source, according to the province. That program change will begin in April."

Canada's economy would gain strength and resilience and support many of us who are struggling during these very difficult financial times.

As the Senate considers a bill that would require the creation of a national framework for basic income, supporters in Ontario say the evidence is clear, and it’s time for action.

@kevinlovestech I should just pop in to say that my colleague, Senator Kim Pate, has never given up on the UBI/GBI file. Her bill, to establish a possible framework for a GBI is moving, slowly, but surely, through the Senate. It hasn't been easy, but Senator Pate is indefatigable. #SenateofCanada #GBI #UBI #basicincome
"With more data at hand than theoretical projection, the evidence is overwhelming: Universal #BasicIncome is working nearly universally."
"In city after city and cohort after cohort — old, young, single parents, ex-convicts — universal basic income has improved health outcomes, raised employment, and bolstered childcare opportunities (and recipients have had consistently better outcomes than control groups)."
UBI works. We know that. It will reduce other costs.

@scottsantens very nicely put! Shows the what incentivising doing nothing does, especially if doing 'something' for 20 or 40 hours a week only gets you a few Euros/quid/dollars more. And punishing or stigmatising those 'on the dole' doesn't help.
All for a basic income, bedingungsloses Grundeinkommen!
Unconditional #BasicIncome, by definition, is unconditional, hence claims of it being a tool for control are nonsense, when its essence is to provide freedom from domination by those who enjoy a position of power through others' lack of access to what they need to exist.

For far too long, jobs have been equated with meaningful work. We must decouple income from work, and in doing so liberate work from employment. It is only through an unconditional #basicincome that our best and most meaningful work, paid or unpaid, will be supported and enabled.
Evidence from UBI pilots shows that universal basic income can significantly reduce poverty, crime, and illness while boosting school attendance and earned incomes. The empowering effect of UBI enables individuals to create their own jobs, ending up with even greater earnings.
To read more about how much of a positive impact universal #basicincome will have on entrepreneurship, here's a piece I've written.
The push for a basic income program gained more momentum during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, as the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) — which paid out $2,000 a month to millions of Canadians — raised the possibility of a permanent income program.
Unconditional Basic Income (UBI) addresses market inefficiencies by ensuring everyone has at least a minimum amount of voice. This better reflects the true demand for goods and services, aligning production closer to actual demand, fostering a more accurate and efficient market response.
To dive more into this particular argument for #BasicIncome, read this:
https://www.scottsantens.com/unconditional-basic-income-would-fix-a-major-flaw-in-markets/
Unconditional #BasicIncome isn't free money. It's free people. As in it frees people. It's the freedom to say yes to what you choose and the power to say no to what you refuse.
If you believe in liberty, believe in freeing everyone from the coercion that the lack of UBI permits.
The United Nations Development Programme has endorsed #BasicIncome to end poverty.
"UNDP has long recognized the multidimensional aspects of poverty. For decades we have dug into the data to understand where people are poor and why."
"We have built the systems that created poverty; therefore, we can also dismantle them."
"UNDP advocates for a Universal Basic Income, which has the potential to restore dignity and create a cushion against future shocks."
@scottsantens what are the UBI-related hashtags with the most signal-to-noise ratio that you'd recommend following as well? I'm afraid #basicincome may be too noisy — I thought perhaps including the "unconditional" may yield better results, but I suspect people won't use that one as much due to the length.
We are purpose-seeking machines. To think Unconditional #BasicIncome will lead to people doing nothing but bare survival is ridiculous. No one wants to just survive. In fact, a great deal of depression comes from feeling like 𝘢𝘭𝘭 we're doing is surviving.
UBI enables true 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴.
#basicincome isn't even "free money".
It allows us to ditch billions of net loss jobs.
Freeing-up magnitudes more purchasing power than required to back it.
The end of nonsense employment will result in the largest gain of wealth in human history.
Let's flip the script. Machines can handle half our tasks, so why are we still breaking our backs?
It's not tech that's holding us back. It's our fixation on old-school work ethic and the fear of "free money".
A tech check isn't a gift. It's a shift.
Embrace it. #BasicIncome
We're the only species who must pay to exist.
In a private property system where all the land was claimed by others before we were born, and everything we need to stay alive costs money, unconditional #basicincome is a basic 👏 human 👏 right 👏 to the resources we all need to exist.
Universal #BasicIncome isn't just about money. It's about freedom, trust, and power. It's the revelation that we don't need to bow to societal pressures to prove our worth. The old guard fears this change - they'd rather label us lazy than admit their fear of a society unchained.
Just imagine the untapped potential in countless burgeoning scientists if unconditional #basicincome was already a reality. Many could pursue their passions uninterrupted, leading to groundbreaking research and discoveries. UBI isn't just a better safety net, it's jet fuel for science!
Imagine this - a world where automation powers prosperity, not for the privileged few, but for everyone.
Automation shouldn't inspire fear and insecurity. It should inspire a transformative shift that can better our world if the benefits are shared universally.
That's up to us.
Asset limits are anti-family. These restrictions can force families to make unthinkable choices. One of those choices is what’s called a “Medicaid Divorce” where couples divorce in order for one spouse, or a dependent child, to be able to keep healthcare.
Universal programs don't have this problem. There's no reason to keep your income below some arbitrary level if you always get it.
We need universal healthcare and #basicincome as a floor that never goes away.

Alaska has had an annual #BasicIncome since 1982. This year the amount is $1,312. For a family of four, that's $5,248. That's the size of the income floor in 2023 that no resident of Alaska is allowed to fall beneath, thanks to their universal dividend in recognition of shared ownership of natural resource wealth.
The US has more natural resources than oil, and AI should be seen as a collectively created technological resource that should also be universally shared.
The city of Las Cruces is piloting a guaranteed basic income program.
The idea has roots in American philosophy deeper than some might think.

In the Namibia universal #basicincome pilot experiment, overall crime dropped by 42%, and the illegal hunting of endangered animals dropped by 95%.
In the Dauphin Mincome experiment in Canada, overall crime dropped by 15% and violent crime by 37%.
Drug abuse also tends to drop with cash transfers.
We see people spending [their #BasicIncome] on basic needs and then when they have more money, they’re paying down debts and investing in their future,' said @markpdonovan, founder and executive director of @denverbip. "Everybody is finding the same thing. We're not surprised by the results. If you're in this space, you understand that most people will use the money for basic needs... I'm extremely pleased with where we are. This income floor creates stability, an accelerated path toward safety, housing, work. It proves our theory of change is right."
Those who care about evidence know that unconditional #BasicIncome works.
Another day, another successful multi-year test of universal #BasicIncome. Imagine that. Shocking. How many more tests do we need to see?
That's right. 75% of those who qualify for housing assistance don't get it, and of the 25% who do and get a housing voucher, that voucher is useless for about half of them.
Meanwhile, cash is something that every landlord accepts, and universal #BasicIncome means everyone gets some every month.
Unconditional #BasicIncome is the fish, and the fishing pole, and the bait, and the tackle, and the clothing, and the time to fish. It's everything that makes fishing possible.
And we should want robots to fish for us, so we can fish for fun versus survival, or do whatever else we prefer to do.
With unconditional #basicincome, so much more work would get done that people actually care about, and the work people don't care about would probably need to pay more or involve fewer hours, or be automated in order to get done, all of which would be great to see too.
"Whilst many countries are piloting #BasicIncome schemes to better understand their suitability in distinct contexts, South Africa has moved beyond the evidence-gathering phase."

"The theory of exodus proposes that the most effective way of opposing capitalism and the liberal state is not through direct confrontation but by means of what Paolo Virno has called “engaged withdrawal,”mass defection by those wishing to create new forms of community.
One need only glance at the historical record to confirm that most successful forms of popular resistance have taken precisely this form. They have not involved challenging power head on (this usually leads to being slaughtered, or if not, turning into some—often even uglier—variant of the very thing one first challenged) but from one or another strategy of slipping away from its grasp, from flight, desertion, the founding of new communities.”
