Considering handlebar covers/mittens for doing #OpenStreetMap updates in cold weather. They're quite pricey though. Would they help?
It's fairly slow travel, with frequent stops near the footway=sidewalk to record data on the phone. Are they any good for that sort of thing, if I use them with a pair of insulated fingerless gloves underneath? #BikeTooter @bikes @mastobikes @cycling

You like #cycling challenges, right? Well, I have a big one for you: cycle these 24 routes in 2024.
Doing so will take you all over the UK and allow you to see far more of the wonders the UK has to offer.

More from "Platinum Bike-Friendly" City of Davis. Inaccessible rack. The only chance folks with many recumbent, trike, quadricycle, and hand cycle designs have is hoping the ends of the rack are empty for them.
This install places the rack so close to a landscape curb that it cannot be used by disabled cyclists like me. So now you hope ONE end is empty when you need it. #BikeTooter #CycleParkingAudit #DavisCA
@ellenor2000 "Bike-Friendly" City of Davis encourages this. https://www.cityofdavis.org/city-hall/public-works-utilities-and-operations/solid-waste-and-recycling/yard-material-collection #BikeTooter
A bldg that held a small insurance agency & had a small car parking lot is being converted to a coffee place. The location would be perfect to attract cycle and pedestrian traffic, but instead they doubled-down on cars (only one space of which is for folks with mobility disabilities who most have the need to drive there) and this is apparently the cycle rack they have planned: #DavisCA #BikeTooter
Contrary to common East Coaster belief, we *do* get Autumn here in California.

72f/22c and I’m wearing 3 layers on top, plus tights, plus a knit cap, and I was still cold for every one of the 18 miles I rode on the ebike today.
What’s your cold weather fit #biketooter? Since I’m the only person that won’t ride if it’s too windy, too cold or over 100f/38c, I’m asking you for help. Links to your favs gear appreciated!
Mostly concerned with keep my core comfortable, including my shoulders, upper arms and neck.
An interesting article, maybe it's a good job that doing one of these (even a relatively short one) is an itch I never got to scratch. I know what the body feels like after a 24 hour event, I can only imagine what 4 or 5 fifteen hour days one after the other would be like. #cycling #biketooter #ultrariders
Columbus' revisions to traffic studies are described here: https://columbus.legistar.com/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=6419966&GUID=C49E0C09-EDF5-415A-85FD-2688E9A94115&FullText=1
I'm worried about:
- the minimum level of service set for traffic studies (D at intersections) seems quite high
- it has requirements for pedestrian infrastructure connections for new development, but not for connections to bike infrastructure or shared-use trails.
@gerrymcgovern I've often thought it should be illegal to advertise vehicles doing illegal things. Anything with "professional driver on closed course, do not attempt" in the fine print.
Driving has because Machiavellian... it's not enough that I'm safe, others must suffer.

First real winter commute of the season this morning. Windy and cold, a scattering of snow, and a dusting of snow on the paths.
Thankfully I got my pogies and studded tires on the bike, and University of Michigan did a relatively ok job of getting paths clear before I set out.

This rack system was made primarily for recumbent "acoustic" trikes, much lighter weight than the cargo e-quad is. Because of that and also because I've never messed with trailer hitches or hitch racks and know nothing about their hardware, I needed help getting it together and getting the quad onto it.
🥰This girl got her new e-bike tonight!
It’s the first fully suspended e-MTB by #nakamura, e-summit 950S.
It’s incredibly smooth to ride, makes nearly no sound in freewheel, is really comfortable. The same 100Nm torque as the e-summit 950 means it leaps forward.
(It took a week because in addition to something off with one brake, they noticed a dent on the frame, assumed something happened during the initial delivery, ordered a new frame and rebuilt it today.)

My round trip bike commute saves an estimated 4 kg (based on 2021 EPA report). For scale, 200 of me would need to bike commute five days a week, 52 weeks a year, for 998 years.

Most of the city centre is between 5 and 10 minutes to The Spire, on average.
Nearly finished getting my road bike back into an actual functioning bike after the front shifter died. Just need to clean off the gunk and fit a new chain. Will be doing mostly indoor cycling for the time being, but hopefully will get some nice days in December where I can still get out
Auto ads sell a mythical world of open roads and all the speed the vehicle can produce. But we don't allow cigarette ads any more because we know smoking causes cancer. We know speed causes death on impact. Is it (past) time to regulate auto ads? I can't find the post, but someone was asking for recommendations on bike tools recently. At the time, I couldn't recall the name of the brand of my favorite bike tools and was too lazy to go check my toolbox. Anyway, it's abbeybiketools.com and they're having their annual sale RIGHT NOW. Enter "BLKCM23" at checkout for 15% off.
A professional mechanic recommended their Crombie Tool to me and it's AMAZING.

I think this one points the way, from Wales, to the twin town in France. I did not try to follow it!
@tk This is true.
But it’s also really difficult, right? Like, there isn’t really a good way to look at a saddle/butt combo and know they’ll get along. And good saddles tend to be expensive, and it’s often impossible to try them before you buy them.
I’ve seen a couple of shops have “saddle libraries” that you can borrow from, which is good- but the time and effort it takes is rough. #BikeTooter
It's sad how so many people never invest into making their bike comfortable beyond maybe a cushy saddle* and end up thinking "bike riding is supposed to be uncomfortable." #cycling #bicycle #biketooter #mastobikes
*Most cushy saddles that people go for (usually based on the saddles being cheap) aren't shaped or padded the right way and end up causing extreme discomfort in a fairly short while. :/
The E-car hall was quiet, corporate, well-funded.
The #DecadeOfTheCargobike hall was full of human noise, energy & ideas, cobbled together with imagination.
As much as governments continue to pour money into the #car industry, it feels like the people have other ideas.
I tested out tons of bikes this weekend at @cargobikefest -- It's exciting how much this industry is evolving.
Three #bikes were outstanding to both pedal and be a passenger in. Two others had noteworthy cargo / logistics innovations.
So much to look forward to in the #decadeofthecargobike!
One of those things that reminds me I'm old is that I'll assume something that was very common for decades is still the case - and it turns out the fashion has changed. Ted Rogers runs BikingInLA.com, a blog that gathers news not just about cycling in LA but cycling in the world. Years ago he discovered that LA County gov't kept no figures on cyclists killed in collisions so he started collecting the data himself, eventually shaming them into paying more attention.
@tzimmer_history There have been memes of using a car to kill cyclists. And it goes beyond memes - not only drivers intentionally mowing down cyclists, but also people stringing wires across cycle trails trying to clothesline cyclists or putting nails & tacks across cycle trails to encourage injury that way.
It's been reported over the years on bikinginla.com and possibly other sites, but I don't know the search term to bring up the examples. #BikeTooter
@tzimmer_history They've been doing this for years now, encouraging people to use their cars as weapons against cyclists and anyone on foot who slows down drivers (e.g. protestors). Cyclists have raised the alarm for a long time, but since even "progressive" people have a hate-on for cyclists, few listened to what it meant about the rise of stochastic violence. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2015/jul/01/sabotage-and-hatred-what-have-people-got-against-cyclists #BikeTooter

@ascentale There are a lot, but I think the biggest problem seems to be that folks within cycle advocacy will deny up and down that there's any ableism problem within cycling and cycle advocacy. A lot of the other stuff that poses problems for me stems from that (or general ableism in society). I feel like we won't be able to solve the many other things until cycling culture realizes ableism is a problem & commits to dismantling ableism. #BikeNite #BikeTooter #UCAccessNow
And the last question tonight is about carrying stuff on the front (or rear) of your cycle.
Q8. If you carry stuff on your cycle, do you prefer it to be in the front or the back? Or both? And why? If you use a handlebar bag or basket, how do you prevent it from messing up your cables or swinging your handlebars around?
When we teach braking to people learning to ride for the first time we advise people to modulate their brakes. We don't even teach the use of the front brake during class until people are comfortable safely using their rear brake. Using fewer fingers is a way to modulate braking power. @xtaran asks:
Q7. There are brake levers for 4, 3 and 2 (and maybe 1?) fingers. Which do you prefer? And maybe on which type of bicycle in case that makes a difference?
