Pleasent Surprise

This bird flew by yesterday. I thought it was a great egret. But after reviewing the photograph, discovered that it is a cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis). I've seen lots of these around, especially in pastures as we drive through the countryside. This is the first time I've photographed one.

"The short, thick-necked Cattle Egret spends most of its time in fields rather than streams. It forages at the feet of grazing cattle, head bobbing with each step, or rides on their backs to pick at ticks. This stocky white heron has yellow plumes on its head and neck during breeding season. Originally from Africa, it found its way to North America in 1953 and quickly spread across the continent. Elsewhere in the world, it forages alongside camels, ostriches, rhinos, and tortoises—as well as farmers’ tractors." - allaboutbirds.org

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #CattleEgret

This egret is flying from lower left to upper right in the frame, the background is blue sky.

The egret's head is set close to the body with almost no neck. Though the front of the breast looks like a neckbone similar to long necked egrets exists, I'll need to research that. The yellow bill is shorter that the great egret's bill. The bird has bulging pale yellow eyes on each side of its head. To me, the eyes look like the button eyes of a doll. The white wings are spread in an "M" shape and are a bit translucent in the light, silhouettes of the wing's bones are visible. Like the rest of the bird the underbody is white, but its had a dark yellow patch of feathers in the center of its breast. The color yellow fades towards the back of the bird. Legs and feet angle straight back and are shrouded in shadow.

"Compared with other herons, Cattle Egrets are noticeably small and compact. They have relatively short legs and a short thick neck. The straight, daggerlike bill is shorter and thicker than other herons. They have medium-length, broad, rounded wings. Adult Cattle Egrets are all white with a yellow bill and legs. In breeding plumage they have golden plumes on their head, chest, and back. Juveniles have dark legs and bill." - allaboutbirds.org

Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata)

These birds are around frequently, but they are a bit shyer than some of the other birds. I see them often dropping to the ground, out of the oak tree in the backyard grabbing what they want and flying back into the tree. I suppose it's what other birds do as well, the blue jays are just larger, and blue, easier to notice.

"One of the loudest and most colorful birds of eastern back yards and woodlots, the Blue Jay is unmistakable. Intelligent and adaptable, it may feed on almost anything, and it is quick to take advantage of bird feeders. Besides their raucous jay! jay! calls, Blue Jays make a variety of musical sounds, and they can do a remarkable imitation of the scream of a Red-shouldered Hawk. Not always conspicuous, they slip furtively through the trees when tending their own nest or going to rob the nest of another bird." - https://www.audubon.org/field-guide/bird/blue-jay

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #BlueJay

This blue jay is facing left standing on the sloped corner of the roof of a wooden bird feeder. Its left side faces the camera, and its head is turned a tad away. Its black beak curves on the top and its eye is yellow. In this photo, its crest doesn't show, rather it lays back on the head like a toupee. There is a black mark that runs across the front of the eyes just above the beak and another that crosses the back of the neck and down the sides. The top of the head, neck, back, wings, and tail are mostly blue. The folded flight feathers are decorated with black and white markings. The folded long blue tail has thin black stripes across the tail at regular intervals. Its gray right foot sits high on the roof and the left below.

"Large, crested songbird with broad, rounded tail. Blue Jays are smaller than crows, larger than robins. White or light gray underneath, various shades of blue, black, and white above." - allaboutbirds.org

Red Bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus)

I had thoughts and curiosities about the hole that this woodpecker is at, but then the top of the tree fell off and the hole was gone. It was in the late fall, one person told me that there was no way she way building a nest because it was too early. But both a male and a female were around the tree fairly regularly.

This is a female woodpecker clinging to the side of a large mostly dead oak tree. She is at an excavated hole it the tree that is just under a large limb that extends off to the left from the trunk. There are several instances of yellow fungus (mushrooms) growing from the tree. The woodpeckers black beak is parted and pointing toward the hole. Her right brown eys is visible. The red cap on the back of her head reached to her shoulders, her face and cheeks are mostly white. Her back and wings are the typical black and white feathers. Her front is a reddish blush color.

Yeah, sex is cool and all, but have you ever had a mama #Mallard look at you like this & then swim over to you with a ridiculously cute waddling of #ducklings trailing behind & then stick around to beg for birdseed with the cutest quacks?

I only saw her around the Wood Ducks so I spent way too long after comparing #WoodDuck & Mallard duckling photos trying to determine if there's a chance they're hybrids. I still couldn't say.

#ducks #birdwatching #BirdPhotography #BirdVideos #HumboldtPark

A mama Mallard swims in one of the Humboldt Park lakes with 6 ducklings trailing behind her. She tilts her head to look directly at the camera and then swims closer with her babies close behind. She flashes that same look after getting to the edge. That look charmed me out of all the birdseed in my pocket.

Surveying the realm.

Northern Mockingbirds (Mimus polyglottos) are very protective of their territory. Here is one at op a small pine tree looking over land, probably hunting.

"Look for Northern Mockingbirds sitting high on tall shrubs, poles, or utility lines. Around your yard, you can also look for them running or hopping along your mowed lawn. You may be able to first identify the presence of a Northern Mockingbird by listening for its song which usually mimics numerous other birds at once." - allaboutbirds.org

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #NorthernMockingbird

This mockingbird sits atop the new growth of a small pine tree. The new growth looks rather like corn cobbs or wheat. The bird is facing right, and its head is cocked slightly downward. It has a medium length black beak that is curved on top and flat on the bottom. Its brown right eye is encased in shadow, but if zoomed in close enough the color is visible. The bird's feathers are mostly light brown, some might call it a gray brown; its wings and flight feathers are just a little darker. Its long grayish tail is cocked slightly upward in relation to its body. Silhouetted legs and feet hang on the to tree.

"A medium-sized songbird, a bit slenderer than a thrush and with a longer tail. Mockingbirds have small heads, a long, thin bill with a hint of a downward curve, and long legs. Their wings are short, rounded, and broad, making the tail seem particularly long in flight. Mockingbirds are overall gray-brown, paler on the breast and belly, with two white wing bars on each wing. A white patch in each wing is often visible on perched birds, and in flight these become large white flashes. The white outer tail feathers are also flashy in flight." - allaboutbirds.org

Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor)

This tufted titmouse was around yesterday along with several others. Fortunately, this bird took a second to pose in this crepe myrtle tree.

"A little gray bird with an echoing voice, the Tufted Titmouse is common in eastern deciduous forests and a frequent visitor to feeders. The large black eyes, small, round bill, and brushy crest gives these birds a quiet but eager expression that matches the way they flit through canopies, hang from twig-ends, and drop in to bird feeders. When a titmouse finds a large seed, you’ll see it carry the prize to a perch and crack it with sharp whacks of its stout bill." - allaboutbirds.org

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #TuftedTitmouse

This little tufted titmouse is in the center of the frame perched on one of several leafy crepe myrtle branches that extend from bottom to top. The little gray bird faces left with its head slightly angled towards the camera. It has a distinct gray crest that sticks up on its head like a shark's fin. The head feathers are gray except for an area around and below the black eyes which is white. Its short, slender, conical black beak is level with the ground and there is a small dark patch of feathers at the top base of the beak. The wings and back are gray and the flight feathers have a linear texture in the last half of the folded wings. The long, folded, slender gray tail stick down. The bird's breast and underside is white to include the small tops of the legs where the Knees are close to the body. The lower legs and feet are gray. The bird's left foot is higher than the right which is down below the body holding the bird's weight.

"Tufted Titmice look large among the small birds that come to feeders, an impression that comes from their large head and eye, thick neck, and full bodies. The pointed crest and stout bill help identify titmice even in silhouette. Soft silvery gray above and white below, with a rusty or peach-colored wash down the flanks. A black patch just above the bill makes the bird look snub-nosed." - allaboutbirds.org

I'm hiding.

This snowy egret (Egretta thula) was at the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana.

"Among the most elegant of the herons, the slender Snowy Egret sets off immaculate white plumage with black legs and brilliant yellow feet. Those feet seem to play a role in stirring up or herding small aquatic animals as the egret forages. Breeding Snowy Egrets grow filmy, curving plumes that once fetched astronomical prices in the fashion industry, endangering the species. Early conservationists rallied to protect egrets by the early twentieth century, and this species is once again a common sight in shallow coastal wetlands." - allaboutbirds.org

This egret stands, facing left, tucked in among the brown and green reeds lining the edge of the bayou. Its white image along with that of the reeds, reflects off the rippled colorful water beneath.

The egrets head and long neck sit back against its body, so it looks like the egret has no neck at all. Its long pointed black and white beak is level with the water. If zoomed in, I can see its yellow left eye surrounded by yellow skin. Long flashy white feathers cover the whole head, neck, body, wings, and tail as well as the top of its legs. Black legs disappear into the water beneath above its knees.

"These are medium-sized herons with long, thin legs and long, slender, bills. Their long, thin neck sets the small head well away from the body. Adult Snowy Egrets are all white with a black bill, black legs, and yellow feet. They have a patch of yellow skin at the base of the bill. Immature Snowy Egrets have duller, greenish legs." - allaboutbirds.org

Good morning, 🐦🐦🐦

If you remember life without cellphones, you were born in the 20th Century. I say that because I retired from the Army in the year 2000 and I didn't have a cell phone. I had just started to see people with them. My wife was still in the Army, and we went to Germany right after I retired. That was where we got our first cellphones. Germany's everyday life communications technology was ahead of ours in the states. It was a complete turnaround from when I was there in the 1970s, even the 1980s and early 1990s. In the 70s we had a utilitarian house phone with an analog meter on top.

“In their phones were antennas, and these antennas sniffed out an invisible world, as if by magic, a world that was all around them, and also nowhere, transporting them to places distant and near, and to places that had never been and would never be.” - Mohsin Hamid, Exit West

I took this photograph during our walk yesterday morning. It's a lone brown bird, far off in a barren tree with white clouds and blue sky in the background. I think it's a brown thrasher, but it's too far away to be absolutely certain.

The clouds are in the lower right quarter of the frame with blue sky on top and to the right. Barren tree branches reach out from the bottom extending upward in all directions. There's no color in the branches, they are just shadows.

The bird sits in the center of the frame at the very top of the tree in a Vee formed at the topmost branch. The bird faces to the right and is mostly shrouded in shadow, but light illuminates its back which is clearly brown. The bird's silhouetted head, with long beak, looks down as if surveying the land beyond. The long narrow brown tail sticks backward and angles slight down.

Sparrbow.

Every time I see one of these little chipping sparrows (Spizella passerina) with their camouflage face and little red feather top, I think of army camouflage. It gives the little birds a tough look. There were hundreds of these little birds around during the winter and early spring. Now, I only see a few foraging on the ground now and then. I read that they switch their primary diet from seeds to insects in the spring and summer.

Diet
"Mostly insects and seeds. Diet varies with season. In summer, feeds mostly on insects, including grasshoppers, caterpillars, beetles, leafhoppers, true bugs, and many others, plus some spiders. Also eats many seeds, especially in fall and winter, including those of grasses, weeds, some waste grain." - https://www.audubon.org/field-guide/bird/chipping-sparrow

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #ChippingSparrow

This sparrow sits on a branch that is on the edge of a bramble of branches facing the camera with its head turned to the right (its left). The sparrow is a small bird with a large head in proportion to its body. At the top of its head is a crop of reddish-brown feathers that stick up and back slightly, from the right angle, it looks a bit like a mohawk haircut airborne soldiers are sometimes depicted as having. Its beak is a very pale reddish tan, but the top of the beak is black. The face is tan with a black strip that runs from its beak, through its black eye, and then angles down to the back of the neck. Its front side is a pale tan, almost an off white. The feet that wrap around the branch are a light pinkish tan. The pale underside of its tail hangs below the branch.

"The Chipping Sparrow is a slender, fairly long-tailed sparrow with a medium-sized bill that is a bit small for a sparrow. Learning the shape of this classic Spizella sparrow is a key step in mastering sparrow identification. Summer Chipping Sparrows look clean and crisp, with frosty underparts, pale face, black line through the eye, topped off with a bright rusty crown. In winter, Chipping Sparrows are subdued, buff brown, with darkly streaked upperparts. The black line through the eye is still visible, and the cap is a warm but more subdued reddish brown." - allaboutbirds.org
