A pretty quiet morning, wasn't much to see. Maybe everyone has departed for warmer climes and the arctic birds have yet to arrive.

Did see a beaver, northern flicker, downy/hairy woodpecker and as usual the cormorants were sunning themselves. Got a nice backlit shot of them.

Male American Redstart (Setophaga ruticilla) displaying at the Marine Nature Study Area in Oceanside, NY. The bird seemed to be foraging, but combined this with a zig-zag stroll, fanning out its tail and prancing some 20 meters up a woodland trail all the way to my feet! But, I'm not sure to whom this bird was displaying: a Palm Warbler was foraging right behind him, also with tail feathers fanned. There may have been a female conspecific nearby. Maybe he was telling me to get lost? In any case, he approached me with little concern, allowing me to take dozens of pictures. Unfortunately, few were as sharp as one would like, as my autofocus insisted on zeroing in on the warbler's tail, combined with a dark environment.

An interesting morning for birding. Saw a small kettle of Broad-winged Hawks at our township nature area, totally surprised me.

From eBird records, Broad-wings have never been reported at our township nature area.

And another unexpected bird: what I believe was a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Seen at a far distance across a field, perched in a tree.

I first thought it was another Olive-sided Flycatcher.

Every morning I use the Sound ID feature in Merlin Bird ID to listen and identify birds in my yard.

And for the past several months, Merlin identifies a Killdeer in my yard.

Not a likely bird for my yard.

And I look about the trees, utility lines, and shrubs and always find a European Starling.

The Summer Gold Chicken (Sommergoldhähnchen) has been spotted! That's the German name for the Common Firecrest, one of the smallest birds in Europe as far as I know.

They're always quite difficult to spot, not only because of their size but also because they're very jumpy and like hiding inside trees.
