One more pic from Bombay Hook. Unfortunately, I didn't get any really good shots of Northern Pintail Ducks, which were abundant, but generally far away, and I wrestled with lighting. This cropped shot doesn't do these attractive waterfowl justice!

"Northern Pintails are elegant, long-necked ducks with a slender profile. The tail is long and pointed, but it is much longer and more prominent on breeding males than on females and nonbreeding males. In flight, the wings are long and narrow. Breeding male Northern Pintails stand out with a gleaming white breast and a white line down their chocolate brown head and neck. Females and males that are molting (eclipse plumage) are mottled in browns and whites with an unmarked pale tan face and a dark bill. In flight, males flash a green speculum (the inner wing feathers or secondaries) and females flash a bronzy speculum." [AllAboutBirds]

The buffet is excellent.

This round bird is a dunlin (Calidris alpina). It's the first that I've knowingly seen. In fact, I didn't know I'd seen it this time until going through the hundreds of photographs that I took at Gulfport, Mississippi.

"Dazzling in its breeding finery, with vivid rusty back and black belly patch, the Dunlin was once called the Red-backed Sandpiper. It’s now named for its nonbreeding plumage, a mousy gray-brown or “dun” color. Dunlins are an abundant species that nests around the world’s arctic regions. They winter in large flocks along bays, estuaries, and coastlines. They have notably long, curved bills but they don’t probe deeply into mud; instead, they tend to feed on invertebrates just barely below the surface." - allaboutbirds.org

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #bird #birdwatching #birdphotography #birdsofmastodon #dunlin

This dunlin stands facing left in shallow brown water while lazy small rolling waves pass by its black legs. The bird is round with a small head upon an invisible neck. Its long black beak bows downwards particularly toward its end. There is a patch of brown feathers atop its heat that looks rather like a toupee. Its eye is black and the feathers around it are a shade lighter than the brown feathers of its head. Its back and wings are brown and maybe a bit darker at the tips of its flight feathers. Its short tail feathers are black. Its front is bright fluffy white with specks of brown nerd its neck and wings.

"A chunky, small shorebird with medium-length legs, a short neck, and a long bill that is curved toward the tip. Breeding adult has bright rusty back and crown, black belly patch, and white underparts with dark stippling. Nonbreeding adults have grayish brown upperparts, head, and breast, and are pale below. Juveniles are browner, with a scaly black and rusty brown marbled pattern above, white below, with faint stippling and trace of dark belly patch. The legs are dark." - allaboutbirds.org

I spoiled the party.

I was at a small mostly hidden pond in Albany, Georgia taking photographs of the birds. I wanted to get closer to the birds, so I found an obscured path down to the water's edge. I was intruding and most of the birds opted to leave when I got closer. These hooded mergansers (ophodytes cucullatus) were among the flock that was at the pond - they all flew away a few at a time. So my plan was mostly a failure. I did get photos of them flying though.

"The Hooded Merganser is the second-smallest of the six living species of mergansers (only the Smew of Eurasia is smaller) and is the only one restricted to North America." - allaboutbirds.org

There are four mergansers flying in line from right to left against a blue sky. The lead duck is a male, the second a female, and the two in the rear are males.

"Hooded Mergansers are small ducks with a thin bill and a fan-shaped, collapsible crest that makes the head look oversized and oblong. In flight, the wings are thin and the tail is relatively long and rounded. Adult male Hooded Mergansers are black above, with a white breast and rich chestnut flanks. The black head has a large white patch that varies in size when the crest is raised or lowered but is always prominent. Females and immatures are gray and brown, with warm tawny-cinnamon tones on the head." -- allaboutbirds.org

All together now.

I wanted to show you these black skimmers (Rynchops niger) gathering on the beach., particularly for those of you who haven't seen this before - I know I hadn't. This photograph just shows a fraction of the birds in this group, and there were several groups on the beach. I've already posted a couple photos of these birds and am sure to post more. I find them fascinating.

"Possibly the best description of the Black Skimmer's bounding, head-down foraging style came from the great seabird biologist R. C. Murphy in 1936. He said they look like “unworldly… aerial beagles hot on the scent of aerial rabbits.”" - allaboutbirds.org

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #bird #birdwatching #birdphotography #birdsofmastodon #BlackSkimmer

This photo of skimmers shows them packed closely together in a strip on the sand up from the water's edge. There were hundreds, perhaps even thousands in the group. This photo is only a fraction of the group and I estimated that there are a couple hundred in the picture. They are all facing the water.

"A medium-sized tern like seabird with very long wings and an outsized bill in which the lower mandible is much longer than the upper. Starkly black above and white below, with black-and-red bill and orange-red legs. Juveniles are brownish above, with pale-edged wing covert feathers." - allaboutbirds.org

Time to move.

I was getting too close to this lesser yellowlegs (Tringa flavipes) so it decided to move.

This yellowlegs flies from right to left over greenish brown rippled water.

"A slender and elegant, medium-sized shorebirds with long legs and a long neck. The bill is straight and thin, only slightly longer than the bird's head (shorter and straighter than Greater Yellowlegs' bill). Breeding Lesser Yellowlegs are grayish brown birds with vivid yellow legs. They have fine, gray streaking across the head and neck, a white eye ring, and white spots on the back and wings. Nonbreeding birds are more subdued gray-brown with less streaking and spotting. Bill is entirely dark." - allaboutbirds.org

Lost among the cars.

Before we made it home this afternoon, my wife wanted to stop at Joann's because apparently, you can never have enough fabric. Well, I watched a bunch of sparrows skitter around in the parking lot they for some reason were going beneath the cars. Then I noticed a larger bird which turned out to be a starling (Sturnus vulgaris) and took its picture. I think it's a beautiful mix of black and gold.

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #bird #birdwatching #birdphotography #birdsofmastodon #starling

"Starlings are chunky and blackbird-sized, but with short tails and long, slender beaks. In flight their wings are short and pointed, making them look rather like small, four-pointed stars (and giving them their name). At a distance, starlings look black. In summer they are purplish-green iridescent with yellow beaks; in fresh winter plumage they are brown, covered in brilliant white spots." - allaboutbirds.org

I see you.

Just in case you think the birds aren't paying attention when you're out on the beach, here is a laughing gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) staring me down yesterday as it flew past while I was taking its picture.

"The oldest known Laughing Gull was at least 22 years old when it was killed in Maine in 2009, the same state where it had been banded in 1987." - allaboutbirds.org

This is a photograph of a laughing gull flying past me on the beach. The gull looks straight at me with a white face, black beak that looks like a nose made out of coal from this angle, and black eyes. There are remnants of black feathers around its head. The gull's body is white including its tail feathers, though black legs lay back against the tail. Its wings are large and spread in a "V" shape; the feathers under the wings are mostly white, but the forward edges of the wings are black especially near the thick neck and the flight feathers fade to black near the wing tips.

Common Starling
Sturnus vulgaris

Common, or European, starlings were intentionally introduced to a wide range of other regions during the 19th and 20th centuries, likely for insect control and to contribute to the aesthetics of local landscapes. Beyond their native range, they became almost globally established during the 20th century and are now widely considered to be an invasive species.

Hunting.

Here's an Ospreay (Pandion haliaetus) that I saw today. The bird was high over the ocean and long way off. The photo isn't the greatest, but it might be the best photo of an osprey that I've taken.

"Ospreys are unusual among hawks in possessing a reversible outer toe that allows them to grasp with two toes in front and two behind. Barbed pads on the soles of the birds' feet help them grip slippery fish. When flying with prey, an Osprey lines up its catch head first for less wind resistance.

#photo #photographylover #photography #birdphotography #bird #birdwatching #osprey

"Ospreys are very large, distinctively shaped hawks. Despite their size, their bodies are slender, with long, narrow wings and long legs. Ospreys fly with a marked kink in their wings, making an M-shape when seen from below. Ospreys are brown above and white below, and overall they are whiter than most raptors. From below, the wings are mostly white with a prominent dark patch at the wrists. The head is white with a broad brown stripe through the eye. Juveniles have white spots on the back and buffy shading on the breast." allaboutbirds.org

White-throated Sparrows have a very distinctive call, and will answer back if you whistle to them. They overwinter in thickets of downed limbs, and greenbrier near wetlands. ID is easy with the song, the white stripes on the head, the white under the bill and the yellow lores. They breed mainly in Canada and overwinter in south and southeast, and along the California-Oregon Coast. Watch for these gregarious birds as you hike.
