The oil painting "Robin in a field of poppies" captures the ethereal beauty of nature and the delicate presence of wildlife. The vibrant pink poppies sway gently in the wind. The robin, with its vibrant orange/red breast, perches gracefully on a branch, symbolising freedom and the harmony between the avian world and the enchanting floral garden. The painting invites viewers to immerse themselves in the tranquility of the scene, where the robin becomes the foreground focal point among the poppies.

Whether a bird is red, orange, or yellow is the product of the ratio of the different pigments in feathers. These pigments are the bi-products of enzymes. Bird get their colorations specifically through yellow dietary carotenoids, which usually consists of vegetable matter. Birds will then convert these yellow dietary pigments to red. This is how they get their colorful red feathers

The wood base of our feeder station fell to bits while I was ill so I've replaced it with some acrylic sheets, printed new standoffs for the cage to sit and it's lovely and strong again, we also got some new easy clean feeders because the old ones were a bit ugh.

The birds have almost totally abandoned the station. I've tried bringing the old feeders back, putting the new feeders away from the station in case it's the new base they don't like, nothing.

This morning I sat quietly in the backyard playhouse. I confirmed that the nest is still occupied, by a midsized bird with long tail feathers. I do not have a good sightline on the nest through the apple tree's leaves, so I can't see well.

Right nearby, and closely watching the area, are a bird pair with gray backs and wings, but with a white spot on the wing. dark face by the beak.

With the egg color, I think it's a mockingbird nest.

This spring I was sad to hear no starlings had nested in my roof. I usually have a loud nest at both the back & the front. I did wonder if the squirrel that invaded my loft over winter had scared them off.

The good news is, I can finally hear chicks under the roof of my bedroom!

I don't know if it's the old pair doing a second brood in their old home, or a new pair making use of the empty nest. Either way, I've got peep peeps!!

Pleasent Surprise

This bird flew by yesterday. I thought it was a great egret. But after reviewing the photograph, discovered that it is a cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis). I've seen lots of these around, especially in pastures as we drive through the countryside. This is the first time I've photographed one.

"The short, thick-necked Cattle Egret spends most of its time in fields rather than streams. It forages at the feet of grazing cattle, head bobbing with each step, or rides on their backs to pick at ticks. This stocky white heron has yellow plumes on its head and neck during breeding season. Originally from Africa, it found its way to North America in 1953 and quickly spread across the continent. Elsewhere in the world, it forages alongside camels, ostriches, rhinos, and tortoises—as well as farmers’ tractors." - allaboutbirds.org

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #CattleEgret

This egret is flying from lower left to upper right in the frame, the background is blue sky.

The egret's head is set close to the body with almost no neck. Though the front of the breast looks like a neckbone similar to long necked egrets exists, I'll need to research that. The yellow bill is shorter that the great egret's bill. The bird has bulging pale yellow eyes on each side of its head. To me, the eyes look like the button eyes of a doll. The white wings are spread in an "M" shape and are a bit translucent in the light, silhouettes of the wing's bones are visible. Like the rest of the bird the underbody is white, but its had a dark yellow patch of feathers in the center of its breast. The color yellow fades towards the back of the bird. Legs and feet angle straight back and are shrouded in shadow.

"Compared with other herons, Cattle Egrets are noticeably small and compact. They have relatively short legs and a short thick neck. The straight, daggerlike bill is shorter and thicker than other herons. They have medium-length, broad, rounded wings. Adult Cattle Egrets are all white with a yellow bill and legs. In breeding plumage they have golden plumes on their head, chest, and back. Juveniles have dark legs and bill." - allaboutbirds.org

Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata)

These birds are around frequently, but they are a bit shyer than some of the other birds. I see them often dropping to the ground, out of the oak tree in the backyard grabbing what they want and flying back into the tree. I suppose it's what other birds do as well, the blue jays are just larger, and blue, easier to notice.

"One of the loudest and most colorful birds of eastern back yards and woodlots, the Blue Jay is unmistakable. Intelligent and adaptable, it may feed on almost anything, and it is quick to take advantage of bird feeders. Besides their raucous jay! jay! calls, Blue Jays make a variety of musical sounds, and they can do a remarkable imitation of the scream of a Red-shouldered Hawk. Not always conspicuous, they slip furtively through the trees when tending their own nest or going to rob the nest of another bird." - https://www.audubon.org/field-guide/bird/blue-jay

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #BlueJay

This blue jay is facing left standing on the sloped corner of the roof of a wooden bird feeder. Its left side faces the camera, and its head is turned a tad away. Its black beak curves on the top and its eye is yellow. In this photo, its crest doesn't show, rather it lays back on the head like a toupee. There is a black mark that runs across the front of the eyes just above the beak and another that crosses the back of the neck and down the sides. The top of the head, neck, back, wings, and tail are mostly blue. The folded flight feathers are decorated with black and white markings. The folded long blue tail has thin black stripes across the tail at regular intervals. Its gray right foot sits high on the roof and the left below.

"Large, crested songbird with broad, rounded tail. Blue Jays are smaller than crows, larger than robins. White or light gray underneath, various shades of blue, black, and white above." - allaboutbirds.org

If Sparrows were people, you wouldn’t want them in the chalet next to you at a holiday park would you.

And while I’m at it, the Starlings would be the polyglot family who pinch all the canoes at Center Parcs and sing songs from the Sound Of Music while they’re doing it.

Don’t have to worry about the Robins though. They’d all be at home under curfew wearing their ankle bands.
