I was playing a game and heard a lot of loud cawing outside that sounded a bit "off", i.e. not like the cawing of the regular crows.

Therefore, I decided to look outside and saw this rook perched on a cable right next to my window!

Its beak is probably slightly open because of the heat. If I remember correctly, this is how bird's try to dissipate heat (their form of "panting", I guess) since they cannot sweat.

The oldest shot in my "to post" folder (from mid-March) – not sure why I haven't done so yet, to be honest. I distinctly remember almost drowning my camera in the small lake this greylag goose was hanging out in.

An Egyptian goose during takeoff roll (...maybe there's a ornithological term for this, but I don't know it, so aviation lingo it is!) being photobombed by a very blurry sand martin (there's hundreds on them nesting within the steep banks of this lake).

A small, light brown bird with a heavily streaked white-and-brown chest and belly sits on a branch above some leaves looking into the camera. On either side of its head is a small tuft of baby feathers that have not yet fallen out. They give the bird a messy, horned look. The background is full of blurred green and red leaves and some light blue patches of sky.

A swan on what looks like a collision course – taken as I was standing, apparently in a good spot for flying over, on a hill next to the lake it took off from. It was gaining altitude faster than it was closing the distance, so this didn't feel quite as perilous as it might appear!

Some photos from my short hike on Monday morning in Kavala. Very nice weather, lots of small animals and flowers. Was definitely worth it.

Featuring: a honeybee full of pollen diving inside a prickly pear cactus flower, a panoramic view of Kavala from above with the island Thassos in the background, a cirl bunting sitting in a tree and a Greek tortoise in the middle of the path that was unfortunately afraid of my steps.

Sitting in the backyard watching all the birds fly by 🎵🎶

People who were around in the 1960s might get the above jingle. This is a green heron (Butorides virescens). I don't recall ever seeing one before, I know I haven't photographed one until now. It isn't the greatest photo because it was way of to the west and starting to fly away from me by the time, I acquired the bird.

"From a distance, the Green Heron is a dark, stocky bird hunched on slender yellow legs at the water’s edge, often hidden behind a tangle of leaves. Seen up close, it is a striking bird with a velvet-green back, rich chestnut body, and a dark cap often raised into a short crest. These small herons crouch patiently to surprise fish with a snatch of their daggerlike bill. They sometimes lure in fish using small items such as twigs or insects as bait." - allaboutbirds.org

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #GreenHeron

This heron is flying away from the camera to the left. Its left side is visible, and the left wing takes up a large portion of the center of the frame. Only the tip of the right wing is visible, the rest is hidden by the bird's body. The bird has a long pointed black bead and a large yellow eye. Its head and upper chest are brown, thought the area immediately under the beak is lighter. In the brown area of the chest, there is a white mark that runs the length of where the brown feathers are. The wings and the lower part of the body are a gray green. Its relatively short legs and feet are yellow and lay back against its short, almost nonexistent, tail.

"Compared with most herons, Green Herons are short and stocky, with relatively short legs and thick necks that are often drawn up against their bodies. They have broad, rounded wings and a long, daggerlike bill. They sometimes raise their crown feathers into a short crest. From a distance Green Herons look all dark. In better light they are deep green on the back with a rich chestnut breast and neck. The wings are dark gray. Juveniles are browner, with pale streaking on the neck and spots on the wings." - allaboutbirds.org

It's #WaterFowlWednesday, so here's a male (and seemingly molting?) mallard flapping its wings in the water.

This seems to be a part of their cleaning ritual. They usually dunk their body into the water, clean themselves with their beaks and, when they're done, shake off excess water like you see in the photo — that is, at least, what it looks like to me!

A view from below.

These cedar waxwings (Bombycilla cedrorum) were among a bunch that would perch in this oak tree every afternoon this past winter.

"A treat to find in your binocular viewfield, the Cedar Waxwing is a silky, shiny collection of brown, gray, and lemon-yellow, accented with a subdued crest, rakish black mask, and brilliant-red wax droplets on the wing feathers. In fall these birds gather by the hundreds to eat berries, filling the air with their high, thin, whistles. In summer you’re as likely to find them flitting about over rivers in pursuit of flying insects, where they show off dazzling aeronautics for a forest bird." - allaboutbirds.org

The wings are broad and pointed, like a starling’s. The tail is fairly short and square-tipped. Cedar Waxwings are pale brown on the head and chest fading to soft gray on the wings. The belly is pale yellow, and the tail is gray with a bright yellow tip. The face has a narrow black mask neatly outlined in white. Elusive

This is a red-headed woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus). I've probably posted this photo before, a long time ago. I took this photo in 2014 and am hoping to see one again this year. But so far, no luck.

"The gorgeous Red-headed Woodpecker is so boldly patterned it’s been called a “flying checkerboard,” with an entirely crimson head, a snow-white body, and half white, half inky black wings. These birds don’t act quite like most other woodpeckers: they’re adept at catching insects in the air, and they eat lots of acorns and beech nuts, often hiding away extra food in tree crevices for later. This magnificent species has declined severely in the past half-century because of habitat loss and changes to its food supply." - allaboutbirds.org

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #RedHeadedWoodpecker

This bird is perched on the right side of a wooden bird feeder. The bird's body is facing to the left, but its head is turned completely around and faces right. As its name implies, its head is a very rich red down to its shoulders. Its eyes are black, and its beak is grayish, but black at the tip. The beak is shaped a bit like a sharpened pencil. The back and wings are black, but a little more than half way down the feathers are white. The underbody is completely white. The black tail props against the feeder.

"Red-headed Woodpeckers are medium-sized woodpeckers with fairly large, rounded heads, short, stiff tails, and powerful, spike-like bills. Adults have bright-red heads, white underparts, and black backs with large white patches in the wings, making the lower back appear all white when perched. Immatures have gray-brown heads, and the white wing patches show rows of black spots near the trailing edge." - allaboutbirds.org

Good morning. 🕊️🕊️🕊️

I took Ben to the veterinarian yesterday. He has something going on with his front paws. This was the third time that I took him for the same thing. However, we saw a different doctor this time who knew exactly what was going on, something-itis. The doc told me and showed me pictures. We got some antibiotics, some anti-itch pills, and some antiseptic wipes.

Have you ever heard the saying; "be the person your dogs think you are?" My dogs help with my humanity. Things like compassion and empathy were never easy for me, I had to work at them. I think empathy and compassion go together. You have to be able imagine what someone else is going through to understand how they feel.

Pleasent Surprise

This bird flew by yesterday. I thought it was a great egret. But after reviewing the photograph, discovered that it is a cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis). I've seen lots of these around, especially in pastures as we drive through the countryside. This is the first time I've photographed one.

"The short, thick-necked Cattle Egret spends most of its time in fields rather than streams. It forages at the feet of grazing cattle, head bobbing with each step, or rides on their backs to pick at ticks. This stocky white heron has yellow plumes on its head and neck during breeding season. Originally from Africa, it found its way to North America in 1953 and quickly spread across the continent. Elsewhere in the world, it forages alongside camels, ostriches, rhinos, and tortoises—as well as farmers’ tractors." - allaboutbirds.org

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #CattleEgret

This egret is flying from lower left to upper right in the frame, the background is blue sky.

The egret's head is set close to the body with almost no neck. Though the front of the breast looks like a neckbone similar to long necked egrets exists, I'll need to research that. The yellow bill is shorter that the great egret's bill. The bird has bulging pale yellow eyes on each side of its head. To me, the eyes look like the button eyes of a doll. The white wings are spread in an "M" shape and are a bit translucent in the light, silhouettes of the wing's bones are visible. Like the rest of the bird the underbody is white, but its had a dark yellow patch of feathers in the center of its breast. The color yellow fades towards the back of the bird. Legs and feet angle straight back and are shrouded in shadow.

"Compared with other herons, Cattle Egrets are noticeably small and compact. They have relatively short legs and a short thick neck. The straight, daggerlike bill is shorter and thicker than other herons. They have medium-length, broad, rounded wings. Adult Cattle Egrets are all white with a yellow bill and legs. In breeding plumage they have golden plumes on their head, chest, and back. Juveniles have dark legs and bill." - allaboutbirds.org

Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata)

These birds are around frequently, but they are a bit shyer than some of the other birds. I see them often dropping to the ground, out of the oak tree in the backyard grabbing what they want and flying back into the tree. I suppose it's what other birds do as well, the blue jays are just larger, and blue, easier to notice.

"One of the loudest and most colorful birds of eastern back yards and woodlots, the Blue Jay is unmistakable. Intelligent and adaptable, it may feed on almost anything, and it is quick to take advantage of bird feeders. Besides their raucous jay! jay! calls, Blue Jays make a variety of musical sounds, and they can do a remarkable imitation of the scream of a Red-shouldered Hawk. Not always conspicuous, they slip furtively through the trees when tending their own nest or going to rob the nest of another bird." - https://www.audubon.org/field-guide/bird/blue-jay

This blue jay is facing left standing on the sloped corner of the roof of a wooden bird feeder. Its left side faces the camera, and its head is turned a tad away. There is a black mark that runs across the front of the eyes just above the beak and another that crosses the back of the neck and down the sides. The top of the head, neck, back, wings, and tail are mostly blue. The folded flight feathers are decorated with black and white markings. The folded long blue tail has thin black stripes across the tail at regular intervals. Its gray right foot sits high on the roof and the left below.

Red Bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus)

I had thoughts and curiosities about the hole that this woodpecker is at, but then the top of the tree fell off and the hole was gone. I'm hiding.

This snowy egret (Egretta thula) was at the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana.

"Among the most elegant of the herons, the slender Snowy Egret sets off immaculate white plumage with black legs and brilliant yellow feet. Those feet seem to play a role in stirring up or herding small aquatic animals as the egret forages. Breeding Snowy Egrets grow filmy, curving plumes that once fetched astronomical prices in the fashion industry, endangering the species. Early conservationists rallied to protect egrets by the early twentieth century, and this species is once again a common sight in shallow coastal wetlands." - allaboutbirds.org

This egret stands, facing left, tucked in among the brown and green reeds lining the edge of the bayou. Its white image along with that of the reeds, reflects off the rippled colorful water beneath.

The egrets head and long neck sit back against its body, so it looks like the egret has no neck at all. Its long pointed black and white beak is level with the water. If zoomed in, I can see its yellow left eye surrounded by yellow skin. Long flashy white feathers cover the whole head, neck, body, wings, and tail as well as the top of its legs. Black legs disappear into the water beneath above its knees.

"These are medium-sized herons with long, thin legs and long, slender, bills. Their long, thin neck sets the small head well away from the body. Adult Snowy Egrets are all white with a black bill, black legs, and yellow feet. They have a patch of yellow skin at the base of the bill. Immature Snowy Egrets have duller, greenish legs." - allaboutbirds.org

(Actually, in this shot you can observe the feathers concealing the crow's ear: the auricular feathers – or: ear coverts – are pointing backwards sort of radially-ish from an area below its eye.)

Set up a new bird bath last weekend. . . Mr. Bluebird has stopped by several times already.

Photographed with a Canon 5D Mark IV & 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L lens.

A medium-sized bird with a black-and-white barred back, buff-colored belly, throat, and head, and a bright red cap and nape sits, crouched on a thin branch, facing the right. His tail feathers are curled in towards his belly, and he looks alert for anything that might be out of place. Surrounding him are more thin branches, covered in dark red and green leaves that have created a lopsided frame for the bird. The background is a mix of dark and light greens.

How to greet a loved one, Egyptian-goose-style. (You'll need to imagine loud honking going along with this.)

Two Egyptian geese, standing right in front of each other on some grass, wings outstretched, honking.
The same shot, basically, just a bit different.
One goose has relaxed their wings, their heads are now almost touching, no more honking.

My #Robin friend Little Mate this morning. He had a bit of time to stop and chat for a while, ate some mealworms and then had to get back to singing - it's his job. In #Bath #Somerset #UK.
