On 24 November 1974 British police charged six people for the bombings in Birmingham on 21 November that killed twenty-one people. Hugh Callaghan, Paddy Hill, Gerry Hunter, Richard McIlkenny, Billy Power and Johnny Walker were convicted of the bombings in 1975. It took sixteen years for the British legal system to accept that the convictions were unsafe.

Since the success of the Commonwealth Games it hosted in 2022, one of Britain's former industrial cities has sunk into crisis. Poor management is one of the reasons for its downfall. The local government is due to present a rescue plan.

For those who want to read an enlightening deep dive into the Birmingham story, I recommend Diane McWhorter's Carry Me Home. McWhorter was raised in Birmingham, in its top social and economic echelons. As I was in the same period in Arkansas, she was taught to imagine that it was working-class whites who were fomenting violence. Then as an adult, she did painstaking study of the many currents leading from top levels of society to those committing the violence.
In her usual masterful way as an accomplished historian, Heather Cox Richardson recounts today what led up to the KKK bombing of Sixth Street Baptist church in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1960, and the deaths of four Black girls.
The bombing took place five days after Birmingham schools were integrated. The recognition of equal rights for Black citizens unleashed a torrent of hate that led to monumental acts of violence.

And why, all these years down the road, keep remembering? This is why, Vance proposes:
"We have obviously not learned the lessons of that history. Today, acts of domestic terrorism committed by white supremacists are not uncommon in our country. ...
In some cases, justice is a long time coming. It should not be, but it is. The delay does not make it any less important, when it finally is done. Justice moves our communities and our country forward."
As Joyce Vance notes, when the Birmingham church bombing occurred, the FBI soon determined that four Klansmen planted the bomb: Thomas Blanton, Robert Chambliss, Bobby Frank Cherry, and Herman Cash. But they were not indicted even after their names were given in a memo to FBI director J. Edgar Hoover.
14 years after the bombing, Chambliss was prosecuted. Blanton and Cherry were convicted in 2001 and 2002. Cash died unconvicted.
And this happened the same day:
"At the same time, across town, another pair of white boys pulled up alongside two young black boys who were riding their bikes. One of the white boys pulled out a pistol, put two bullets into a thirteen-year-old's head and chest, and drove away."
Even as people gathered to pull the girls' bodies from the rubble white teens with a Confederate flag and a sign saying "Go Back to Africa" stood taunting those moving the rubble. Black teens nearby threw rocks at the white teens. Police on the scene then turned against the Black teens — not the white ones — and shot one of them in the back.
As Kevin Kruse reminds us, on this day in 1963, white racial terrorists bombed Sixteenth Street Baptist church in Birmingham, killing four Black girls, fourteen-year-olds Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley and Carole Robertson, and eleven-year-old Carol Denise McNair.

Just finished #CarParkLife - the book from @garetherees which documents his explorations of car parks. I picked it up when visiting a local independent book store in #birmingham and I asked them - what books do you have about #urbanism ? It's not really about that, but it's a very interesting read about all of this space we've dedicated to cars in today's world and the secret wonders that can be found there. Rees somehow manages to make car parks engaging and funny, and the sections are short and bite sized. Worth a read! #nonfiction #books
