The Modernization of Cosmetics Act of 2022 only protects consumers after the damage is done -- through recalls. Cosmetics makers don't have to prove their products are safe. Women using hair straightening products are especially at risk. The Look Good Feel Better program encourages women undergoing cancer treatment to use cosmetics. Meanwhile, the EU has banned 2,400 dangerous chemicals that can't be used in cosmetics. The US has banned 11.

Jane Cooke Wright is a pioneering cancer researcher and surgeon. Not only did she contribute a lot to chemotherapy, she developed a drug to treat breast/skin cancer.

AND if that wasn’t enough, she did something extraordinary for humans and animals alike. She figured out how to use human skin tissue for testing instead of using mice.

On 11/5/68, Shirley Chisholm became the first Black woman elected to Congress. "Fighting" Shirley Chisholm rocked the House to its foundations. We all benefit from her trailblazing legacy. Definitely one of the heroes! #NewYork #NYC #History #Historian #historymatters #BlackWomen #NamingGotham #histodons @histodons

Representation matters!

"This week, history was made when Sen. Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.) became the third Black woman ever sworn into the U.S. Senate.

Now more than ever, we urgently need Black women's representation in both chambers of Congress to address our top concerns."

won't know for another week (i think) if it's #cancer or not. so am not in the clear yet.

but let me tell you something:

every single doctor (all women, btw) told me had i waited another year to get a mammogram, it most likely would have developed into cancer.

so, for the love of your life and those who love you:

way too many #BlackWomen die of breast cancers, at younger ages, that could have been nipped at the bud had they gotten mammos in their 30s & 40s

Though a non-American and non-academic I found this book fascinating. It altered the way I looked at the Civil Rights Struggle, centering women. Awesome stories

"I simply have to observe this: It probably irks Trump to no small degree that the professionalism, experience and skill of three powerful Black women—District Attorney Fani Willis in Georgia, Attorney General Letitia James in New York, and the Hon. Tanya Chutkan in D.C.—will largely determine his fate and even his freedom in this era of accountability.

Karma sometimes has a wicked sense of irony."

On this day in 1972 Shirley Chisholm was nominated the Democratic presidential candidate. She was both the first Black person and woman to be nominated. She ran on the slogan “unbought and unbossed.”

With obvious challenges she called out her gender as the biggest, noting “…I met more discrimination as a woman than for being Black.”

Thanks to the cyclist husband, TIL about Kittie Knox, a prominent biracial cyclist of the late 1800s. Her mother was white, her father was Black, and she spent her short 26 years on this planet breaking serious social, gender, and racial barriers.

Read up on her. She was amazing.

This constant policing of, OR exploiting Black women’s bodies has been going on FOREVER. An additional truth is, some of us enable it, and make money off doing so, as do record companies and white TV/film executives. There are also questions, such as: who has ULTIMATE agency?
