#Blind
Okay #blind community. I need help with something. Recommendations for a kitchen thermometer that can be connected to an accessible app. I seem to recall iGrill brand used to have an accessible app. Any others?
I know many #blind people who use GMail's HTML view. Not only will they be confused but will be unhappy.

It should still work but doing so will not provide the option to set the mode as the default anymore.
So this might sound like a ridiculous question, but I am still getting used to using my Focus 40. Trying to delete all my Bluetooth connections and Im at the delete all option. How do I select Y for yes? Tried the cursor routing button above the Y but nothing. Please help me avoid reading the manual!

I may have an #iPhone15Pro in my hands in the next few days. If you’re considering the upgrade, what are you keen to know? I’ll answer next week on #DoubleTap once I receive it!
@gabriel @bookstodon Caveat before I give my opinion: you’re allowed to love what you love. My opinion is NOT a personal attack.
I loathed it. I felt that the book was an attack on my personally and on “my people”, those with albinism and vision impairment. The blind protag’s upbringing was also abusive. For more (review NOT an essay) see this link https://www.darkmatterzine.com/illustrating-doerrs-on-albinism/. #AllTheLightWeCannotSee #Disabled #VisionImpaired #Blind

@anaerin Thank you! This makes 3 options I have so far. The Fediverse is a wonderful place. I never expected this sort of response. thank you all

@Pixelle_3D @djghettoredneck It's like this. Until #Android is as #accessible for #blind people as #Apple, the answer is a big fat no!
I've had my first week of using a short cane while out and about. Was given like 10 years ago. Been reluctant.
I hold it still, close to my body, up off the ground.
It's been a very positive experience. People have been kind and thoughtful.
If I only mention what is in the images, then #Blind or #VisuallyImpaired users might complain that I don't tell thim what it looks like.
This would definitely matter even if the images were real-life photographs. But they won't be real-life photographs. They will be taken in a virtual 3-D world. A very obscure one. As in, absolutely nothing in these pictures will be familiar for anyone. Except for a few dozen out of over 13 million Fediverse users. Another reason why I'll have to describe and explain everything in an #ImageDescription.
So the first of these three images will have to get descriptions of
- the walkway in the foreground (done)
- a cubic background for a display (done) including three real-life nebulae (mentioned, but not described yet)
- the ground that connects the walkway with the cube (done)
- the teleporter in front of the display (done) including descriptions and transcriptions of all labels and buttons (done) and a description of the currently selected preview image (done)
- a sign including transcription (done)
- three different robots (done)
- a black-hole-like object (done)
- ten different fictional spaceships (four are done)
- the surrounding ground, water and sky
The second image will have to get descriptions of
- the walkway in the foreground (covered with the first image)
- a cubic background for a display (covered with the first image) including three real-life nebulae (two covered with the first image, one new)
- the ground that connects the walkway with the cube (covered with the first image)
- the teleporter in front of the display including descriptions and transcriptions of all labels and buttons (only the top label and the four buttons at the bottom are covered with the first image unless I deliberately manipulate the teleporter to show the same as in the first image)
- a sign including transcription (only the general look is covered with the first image)
- four robots, one of them on a display stand, one in packaging (only one is partially covered with the first image)
- an info kiosk
- an armed drone
- four spaceships
- the surrounding ground, water and sky (will be covered with the first image)
The third image will have to get descriptions of
- the walkway in the foreground (covered with the first image)
- a cubic background for a display (covered with the other images)
- the ground that connects the walkway with the cube (covered with the first image)
- the teleporter in front of the display including descriptions and transcriptions of all labels and buttons (only the top label and the four buttons at the bottom are covered with the first image unless I deliberately manipulate the teleporter to show the same as in the first image)
- two signs including transcription (only the general look of one of them is covered with the first image)
- an elaborate space station with numerous writings to transcribe
- a small asteroid with a used spaceship dealership on it, including seven spaceships (only two of them are partially covered with the first image), one robot (partly covered with the first two images) and three signs to transcribe
- the surrounding ground, water and sky (will be covered with the first image)
Also, I have to mention where these pictures were taken. This is important within the context of the post.
They were taken in a place called Sulfur at an event called OpenSimFest 2023.
Would you know right off the bat what either of them is? No? See, that's why I have to explain that. Without this explanation, nobody would even understand what I'm writing about.
In order to explain it, I have to explain what OpenSim is.
Also, I have to explain why these exhibits matter, who created the items in them, the whole shtick, because it's all important to understand these pictures.
These initial explanations alone take up over 4,200 words.
This is also why I don't write three fully separate, stand-alone image descriptions: I'd have to add this 4,200+-word lead-in to each of them, causing massive redundancy.
This, in turn, is why I can't go gradually into more detail: I have to do the full 4,200+-word lead-in before I can even mention what is in each picture individually. Otherwise, I'd have to do a short lead-in, then describe what is in the first picture (the lead-in will only be part of the description of the first picture), then jump back to a general explanation for all three pictures, then jump back to the first picture. That'd be way too confusing.
Everything concerning all three pictures has to be explained before I can start writing anything about any individual picture.
As a #blind GM the bane of my existence when preparing for my #TTRPG of choice is figuring out the #map. Does anyone know of any resources out there that would allow me to take a visual map on a #jPG of #PDF and turn it into a #tactileMap or a #textDescription. I would gladly accept something like #altText but in great detail. I am also open to suggestions for alternative methods. I've run into this with quite a number of games. Boosts are welcome and hoped for. #mapConversion #3DPrinting #embossing
I’m hearing a weird myth go round nowadays that blind people have essentially chosen Mastodon as the place to be. Now, while I agree Mastodon is good for accessibility, I’d love to hear where the evidence is for such an idea? I’m still active on X as I didn’t want to abandon people who took the time to follow me, so I’m being as inclusive as I can by not excluding anyone from my content. And it’s as active as it always has been. So where did this story come from? I’ll be discussing this soon on a future episode of #DoubleTap.
And I'm not even half done describing one image. Out of three planned images.
I could just mention what's in the image and be done with it. But that wouldn't help #Blind or #VisuallyImpaired users because they wouldn't know what it looks like. And nobody would even know what it is.
Even in winkelcentrum #DeHoef #Alkmaar geweest.
IN case you thought I'd forgotten about a photo/camera guide for #blind people to let people understand #photography and how to take photos optimally, well I haven't. I'm just about finished with my research. It's time to start writing, rewriting and even more writing.
Which, in turn, means very long #ImageDescriptions because there's nothing in these pictures that anyone is familiar with. You think 1,500 characters are long? You're cute.
I've been working on it for about an hour. I'm past the 4,000-character mark. Already now, that's too much not only for #Mastodon, but also for #Misskey and default-settings #Firefish. It's way too much for #AltText almost everywhere in the #Fediverse. And I've barely scratched the surface, also because explaining the very setting took more than 3,000 characters already.
Now I'm facing the first challenge. There are four pictures of nebulae. I'll have to identify three of them to be sufficiently informative for curious users, and then I'll have to describe all four of them in all their details for #Blind or #VisuallyImpaired users. And this is what people are the most likely to be familiar with. There are also more than a dozen different spaceships, a space statiion and whatnot.
The things you do for #Accessibility and #Inclusion and to make your pictures understandable for everyone.
Anyone #blind people know if there were such things as pagers for the blind that could be used back in the 90s? Genuinely curious because those things were cool.
question for folks who use a screen reader, is the recent change (at least on mastodon.art) to let hashtags appear separate from the post itself actually making screenreaders skip those tags? gonna add a few tags after this to test, thank you!!!
I'm not gonna lie, using Youtube Music, at least the audio player, is really nice. When a song starts playing, TalkBack tells me what the song is. I know, some people won't like that, and I hope that becomes configurable. But when I go to the next song button, and then lock the screen, and then unlock it and get back into the app, TalkBack focus is *still* on the next button, ready for me to just double tap. I can also use the GoodLock Sound ssistant module to set a long press of the volume buttons to go to the previous or next track. Ugh I just love that kind of stuff. I can't wait for TalkBack to catch up to VoiceOver.

@Mastodon awesome! Now, make alt tags for blind users in the timeline, without opening the post details screen. #MastodonApp #Blind #accessibility
The entry is almost ready, in case anyone would want to beta test it: https://eibriel.itch.io/compicactus-copycat
Added Gamepad and Text to Speech support. It can be played with only sound (no sound effects yet). And is available in English and Spanish.

I run across #blind folks a lot when I am dog training their dogs and notice lots of them use aromatherapy. How do you make sure the scents are pet friendly? Incense and oil diffusers and scented candles can make pets sick. How do you get around that? People's sensory needs are important, too.

So I don't know if Android will ever catch up to iOS. And the constant questions of how to use dictation and Google Assistant talking over TalkBack for others when they use headphones, and all that definitely doesn't help, along with how snappy some people in the blind Android Users community are. Now what was I gonna say? Oh yeah. I don't know if Android will ever catch up to Apple accessibility, but I'm really getting use to using my PC for everything. Emacs is turning out to be more than good enough as a writing environment, with company-mode suggesting words, mostly correctly, way before Apple's word suggestions would have popped up. There's no lag in Internet browsing, I can use Gmail or Outlook for email, yeah I have a good setup here. And with Beeper (which isn't completely accessible), I can text from my computer and read texts in full, including the conversation.
Mein #Fairphone kam gestern an. Sehr cooles Konzept.

I wrote a small #macOS #utility which blocks all mouse and/or trackpad input. This way, #blind #Macbook users will not brush the trackpad by accident while typing. I wroie it for my friend who had recently startedt o use MacOS and she was constantly changing windows and clicking stuff inadvernetently hence this tool is born. Sorry for not notarizing it, Xcode 15 RC has a bug which makes it crash. when signing a macOS app. The app is safe, the only reason why it requires #accessibility permissions is to be able to discard global mouse events. Hope you find this useful

"Finally, after four years of testing and developing, LEGO is selling braille bricks that use the bumps on their iconic bricks to teach the Braille alphabet—and these aren’t only for blind people.
Alongside the Braille bumps on each brick is printed the letters and numbers so that everyone can play while learning a new language, including the sighted. The new ‘Play with Braille’ set makes learning braille more fun and accessible to everyone.
LEGO Braille Bricks are moulded with the same number of studs used for individual letters and numbers in the Braille alphabet, while remaining fully compatible with every LEGO system.
“For blind and partially sighted children, and adults for that matter, it makes all the difference if they can share their journey of learning braille with the people they love the most,” said Martine Abel-Williamson, President, World Blind Union."

As a fully #blind #developer myself I am of two minds on this. If this was a world in which I could have nice things, i'm all for this. An AI that styles stuff for me so I don't have to? Yes, please. My #CSS is dreadful and I simply don't have the bandwidth to improve it at present.
But this is not that world, and blindness organizations sending me inaccessible bills when they want money is a clear indication that I cannot, in fact, have nice things a lot of the time. The fact I couldnt'make an account on a website to find a catsitter this weekend because of an inaccessible form does, as well. So, alpha or not, train your product on best practices, or kindly get the heck out of the sandbox before you hurt the internet more than it already is hurting. #accessibility #vercel #v0 #shiftLeft
What does being #blind look like?
According to my friends, seeming perfectly functional until I run into a pole because it was in my central vision and I was making poor life choices by not using my probing cane...
This is kinda older, but it's something I've not seen before.
