#BlockTheBlue

I joked earlier that this was because Grimes probably blocked him but I think now it has more to do with the tremendous failure that buying blue checks caused. #blocktheblue basically owned Elon so hard and he had to let people hide their check marks. #twitter

after #blocktheblue campaign musk now removes the block function. the blue subscribers now get the attention they seek. #twitter turns to be an anti-social network
Once again Elon showing his hostility towards his users. I'm sure this is in response to the #BlockTheBlue movement.

@esvrld Because plenty of those calling for #BlockTheBlue are already presupposed to oppose sex work on moral or "exploitation" grounds; and because not having Twitter Blue does block a user from some features that are useful for outreach.
Although, given how much Musk has tainted the app with his own Nazi/Alt-Right brand and fetish, it's increasingly not worth either the cost nor the association.
@poofbirb dril's constant declamations of #BlockTheBlue dovetail so perfectly with his character's historical relationship to the police. it's beautiful

@GossiTheDog this is Elno’s strategy for undoing the #BlockTheBlue movement right?
If you must be on the #hellsite KEEP ON speaking truth to power and BLOCK the BLUE CHECKS. #BlockTheBlue
If the last you heard was that "#BlockTheBlue" permanently consigned the blue tick to hated status and only Musk fans were buying them, I'm afraid that hasn't lasted. Every time I look back on my old feed I see more and more "normal" people and organisations have quietly caved and bought them in order to get some clout back. But I'm sure they've rationalised to themselves how paying the far right is actually fighting them, or something… #Twitter
I installed an automatic #BlockTheBlue extension, and things were going great, right up until I programatically committed some light blasphemy.

My total count is a bit over 3,000 now, which probably tells you a lot about my blocking behavior over the last 9+ years.
The right isn't getting any special treatment with Twitter Blue. #blocktheblue movement won't change that. It's time to stop suppressing those on the left who want to be heard. Understand what #TwitterBlue gives subscribers and what it doesn't.

This seems to work like a charm to #BlockTheBlue: You run some code in your browser's console and every blue check account currently on that page/tab will be blocked. Using it on the replies to a tweet from SpaceX, say, will render dozens or hundreds of new blocks.

✵ - Epic Games CEO rages over people making fun of Elon Musk's Twitter Blue
On April 22nd, Sweeney took aim at those who were supporting the ‘#BlockTheBlue’ campaign, in which people would block accounts that paid for Twitter Blue, calling them “losers and goons.” Strangely, Sweeney — a billionaire thanks to the likes of Fortnite and Epic’s ubiquitous Unreal game development engine — then proceeded to make a reference to his high school experience. “They’re [#BlockTheBlue supporters] the cool kids from junior high who worked to exclude we nerds from cool kid events, plus the losers who joined in to gain cred,” he tweeted.
Later in his thread, Sweeney went on to say that “an online community like this should be a meritocracy, where everyone has an equal chance, and merit is earned rather than anointed by a corporation.” (It’s unclear how paying for a checkmark equates to “earning” merit.)
...
I am blocking every single account on Twitter that pays for their blue check mark. There will be no exceptions. #BlockTheBlue
But there have already been some cases where I was like:
June 18, 2009: The last time I fucked around and found out about Twitter verification.
"When the Auschwitz Museum is having to issue a public statement saying that they didn’t pay for #TwitterBlue, it’s probably time for some deep self-reflection about what you’re doing.
Oh and now that advertisers have to subscribe to #Twitter Blue to advertise, any extension that blocks Twitter Blue users will also probably block most ads. The business genius has another excellent idea."

@jon I find quite silly people tweeting #blocktheblue while still using the blue website.. but silly at it is, at least it might cause some real financial damage to the website they insist on using, eventually leading to its end 🤞
So, I was just thinking about #Twitter Blue a bit ago. Reporting is that since the purge there is a net of 28 new signups. That's only $2,688 USD, a rather pathetic number. But wait, that's before taking into account the processing charges for the transaction, which at about 30 percent reduced the amount to $1,688 USD.
And, I have my doubts he's even made that much... #Elon has started doling of Blue subscriptions as "gifts" to his celebrity "friends", which is hard to believe when the list includes several deceased people, and quite a few of the people behind the #BlockTheBlue movement.
Instead of actually making any money on me signups, I'm certain he's actually losing money. IMO, the whole reason to come out the freebie accounts was to inflate the numbers so it looks like he didn't take a step backwards. This was most likely done to (a) keep current users on the #BirdSite, (b) try to frustrate the #BlockTheBlue people, and (c) make the site appear more attractive to advertisers and try to win then back.
So, the reality is: things are more pathetic than many of the critics of #Musk's management of the site are thinking it is.
@KayOstas My favorite detail is that all the #BlockTheBlue folks were "gifted" the checkmark so that their own initiative blocked them.
Like, it's an actual punishment. That's hysterical.
It’s HILARIOUS seeing all the minnows with Blue Checks on that site!

@janwwbosch @gavreilly Oh they are just randomly putting it on accounts now - presumably to prevent the #BlockTheBlue campaign. BBC news is unlikely to be paying for blue (or they'd be paying for the gold one not the blue one) so yeah this is twitter being twitter 2.0
@mastodonmigration Tweets humiliating #ElonMusk keep trending and there's nothing he can do to stop this. He hopes that by paying the money for celebrities who don't just refuse to pay but boast about why they won't, he hopes this will undermine #blocktheblue since we'd end up blocking our highest profile allies. But we know who he is paying for. And we won't block them. But this could sabotage apps that automatically block those who have been verified against their will.

#blocktheblue #Twitter
I've seen a few accounts get random #BlueChecks from actors to content creators who didn't have a blue checkmark this morning. So unless everyone bought them at the same time it seems odd.
So did people like Nate Silver really pay $8/month to be #Twitter Verified or is this Elon giving certain high profile Twitter accounts a “free” Blue Check to try and convince other people to pay as well … or an attempt to gum the #BlockTheBlue movement? It’d be really odd for someone like Nate to pay given people like him create content that other people come to Twitter for.

@halfcocked it's wild that Twitter Blue is so bad that you not only can't give it away, but that it's actually being given to people as punishment.
I've been online for well over 3 decades. I've seen a lot. I ain't seen *this* before.
If you've disconnected from #twitter but are curious about #ElonMusk's current mess:
Twitter took away legacy blue checkmarks but Elon decided to "pay" for some himself for big celebrities.
Everyone started mocking him for it.
Some started a campaign #BlockTheBlue using plugins to block all paid-verified accounts.
Elon then "gifted" the largest accounts promoting this with Twitter Blue assuming they would then stop to protect themselves from being blocked.
Including the account for dril
Well, I ended up deciding to change the checkmark to a tree that I like after hearing about the #BlockTheBlue campaign going on.
In solidarity with Twitter users blocking en masse accounts with blue check marks, I’m doing the same thing here on Mastodon. #BlockTheBlue

#BlockTheBlue is a spirited bit of resistance and should cause Musk some anxiety. That is, until he simply reverses all blocks of Blue subscribers in one click. It still doesn't seem to have sunk in that Musk has total control of the thing and the only act of resistance that can overcome that control is leaving.

@joshsternberg @mastodonmigration @tchambers But what does this verification badge actually verify? That even if they have less than 100 followers and no one thinks they're interesting enough to follow back, so their follower/followee ratio stinks, they still get verified because they don't mind giving one of the world's richest man $8 per month? This system has become a joke. We need to campaign to make a mass boycott successful asap. #blocktheblue
