Dorsey just promoted the podcast of RFK Jr.. And if you've read anything about the Block/Tidel lawsuit, you know he acted so much like Musk - he pushed through what he wanted to impress/help Jay-Z despite no one else at Block thinking it was a good idea. Pensions got damaged.

That is exactly why I feel conflicted about it. They don't want to invest in ActicityPub because it's limiting in many ways from their perspective (as in: less control). Yet they claim it will be decentralized (it's not, and I doubt it ever will be FULLY). But at the same time they're already said there will be ads and it will be monetized. You should be more specific - #bluesky is making an open source protocol, but their social network built on top of that protocol isn't open source.
#forProfit company with a stated public benefit purpose (that's opened for misuse and manipulation) can't be even remotely similar to a #nonProfit.

Everything shows publicly. It's not meeting the requirement for privacy from my perspective.

You can't self host #BlueskySocial. It's still not decentralized. Yet they say otherwise. Fake it until you make it?
Anybody know anything about BlueSky social? I get Nostr, that's just Jack Dorsey, and Crypto Bros gonna Crypto, but why is BlueSky trying to create ANOTHER distributed social network when we already have one that WORKS GREAT and WITH OPEN STANDARDS UNGH! :)

I’m putting my #Mastodon account on a temporary freeze for the time being.
I’m putting all my post efforts into #Bluesky, as that social media platform has more potential, to me. Cross posting on three platforms is a bit too much.
I hope to see you all move to #BlueskySocial in the near future, as federation and the next phase of moderation will land in the coming weeks, and invites will be easier to get.

logged on to #BlueSkySocial and sure seems to me what people actually want is just twitter as it actually was in their minds. They don’t want to think about the ownership or political implications or anything other than if their influencers are on there being funny and sarcastic. Broke my heart to see JORTS just embracing it but alas the app would not let respond
Painfully obvious that #BlueSky is going to be favoured over #mastodon (the default concept of ActivityPub in the minds of normal people) by most who leave twitter; twits LOVE a direct twitter rip. It's already building steam with people I followed on twitter who haven't bothered to make a home of Mastodon.

Bluesky was created by Jack Dorsey previous owner of twitter. It is supposed to be based on distributed networking similar to mastodon.
So is bluesky part of the fediverse or will this be a separate entity?
#BlueSkySocial so far: Data scientists swooning over the refreshing discourse in the “What’s Hot” tab, AI art, Korean, and a toy duck replying in baby voice to anything political in the “Following” tab. 🤷♀️
The increasing popularity of #Bluesky has uncovered the amount of people here who themselves thrive on controversy and purposely staying economical with information.
I think it’s good people are having a critical eye towards a new player. But when people want to score points by creating controversy of a closed beta, and leaving out information of its ongoing development, that’s not okay.
I feel #BlueskySocial is considered a threat to some hardcore #Mastodon users here and are lashing out.
A reminder: BlueSky isn’t decentralized until anybody can install a server and run their own node and communicate freely with every other BlueSky user.
Until then it’s just another Jack-associated social network.
If anyone is on #BlueSky, I’m over there now also. Not sure how I’ll be using it as of right now, but am keeping my eye on it.

@paul #BlueskySocial devs have already said they will implement ads at some point. Cause they’re VC-backed and have to make money for investors.
But dependence on advertisers is a dead end for any product. It’s the easiest economic model but the most dangerous. Once you depend on ads revenue, it’s not your product – it’s the advertiser’s product. And you are just a manager.
Despite all problems with Fediverse, it’s the best social we have.

I have many questions and doubts about AT and BS (heh, acronym is a sign). Decentralzation and open source don't mean anything if the end goal is make money from users via yet another commercial platform just like Twitter. Fediverse doesn't have those doubts because it's intended to be free (in its all forms, ad-free, bloat-free, monetization-free, big corp free...). #BlueskySocial may be FOSS, but it will never be FLOSS. Let us talk when I can install it to my server as easily as Mastodon.
Personally for me ActivityPub is perfect. It has its flaws but who's to say it will be forever like this?

I find it strange that #BlueskySocial wanted to create their own protocol just because the existing ones weren't "good enough". Who's to say everything will always stay the same? We've been having development in every major protocols throughout the history of the Internet, look at http for example.

I like the fact that in the #Fediverse the primary goal is not algorithms or making money, but owning your data and using social networks in your own terms.
#BlueSkySocial FEELS like open and decentralized but has been received funding from Twitter and has not yet fully revealed its monetization plans. This is why I won't fully trust it. I'm glad they won't invest in the ActicityPub protocol. Their reluctancy to AP is also something I find strange even after reading the arguments.
Let's remember that #BlueSky a startup company, and companies are to make money. This is where #Mastodon for example is different, there is no monetization and never will be.

I don't have a huge trust to #BlueSkySocial. I feel like using it I won't be fully owning my data. Feels shady in this point.
@rolle if I understood correctly you will have your own data both locally and remote. A private/public key system to ensure only you have control and can restore it on another data repository.
I anticipate it won’t be compatible. Maybe it can work somewhat like the #Nostr bridge for #Fediverse, but haven’t looked at it.
We’ll need to wait and see how everything beyond the AT protocol develops and if the front/backends will be released as open-source.
@alastor8472 I'm skeptical that I can own my data in Bluesky. Can I install it to my own server? Will it be fully open? It most likely will not be compatible with ActivityPub/Fediverse in any way, they have stated this many times and if I'm not going to own my data including the code 100%, I will not use it. For FLOSS people this is a big no no. #BlueskySocial #Bluesky
For now I just ask everyone to be excited of the many opportunities, learnings and developments were in. A few years ago it all felt stale in the social media platforms world, look at us now.

I hope we’ll see more third party apps of devs that worked on their #Mastodon clients also consider #BlueskySocial as a potential place to earn fame and money.
Who knows in the future we’ll might see some more collaboration between the various decentralized protocols from #Bluesky, #Nostr, #Farcaster and #ActivityPub. It really is hard to predict the future and the relevance of each while all the players are relatively small.
Right now they also seem to cater to specific groups of people.

As some wrote, this is not a cheap attempt in just promoting a competitive #Twitter alternative. I’m just honestly excited and curious of Bluesky’s development as it addresses my main concerns with Mastodon.
Right now there is no really big player and anyone can still take a major part away from Twitter, if executed well.
— Protocol and APIs
Even if #BlueskySocial is still in closed beta for users, the API is already open for usage. And AT is open-sourced. So for developers it’s possible to get started creating new tools or improve the protocol.
I believe the previous posts on discoverability, portable user data, support do algorithms are valid reasons to create a new protocol by #Bluesky.
It doesn’t invalidate #ActivityPub used by #Mastodon. But it might indicate a concern on its slow development.

From what I’ve seen Jay is running #BlueskySocial as a company admirable. She has shared a few times some of her decision making, in ousting why it’s still currently in closed beta testing. It’s refreshing to see an open, but also decisive person like her. And of courses surrounded by a small, but fast moving forward team at #Bluesky that is expanding.
I want to remind everyone that #Mastodon also is supported by a company run by the CEO / lead developer.

Ex-CEO and founder of #Twitter is indeed a board member of #BlueskySocial. He is also investing in #Nostr. While he advices #Bluesky, it is run by CEO Jay Graber. She insisted on spinning of Bluesky as a company from Twitter a few years back. This is also when they got their initial funding.
— Monetization
#Mastodon are not free, you may use them, but they are either running on donations, commercial, self hosted, etc. There are no ads (afaik).
#BlueSkySocial is still thinking about this. It might be ads delivered through the AppViewer. Certain parts simply require money to keep running and also to continue development. Maybe the algorithm and moderation marketplaces can deliver some money as well.
As any company #Bluesky needs to look into a healthy way of running it.
— Followers (discoverability III)
In addition #BlueskySocial will allow you to easily browse other user profiles, who they follow and follow those as well. Currently search in #Bluesky also suggest users that have common followers.
Unlike #Mastodon where (without some tricks) it’s hard to see any followers beyond your instance. And following them leads you through all kinds of (web) loops.
Most #Mastodon instances don’t enable full text search. And if they do, it won’t work for the others.
— Search (discoverability II)
#BlueskySocial has a specific search index that will do a full text index on profiles and posts, much like on #Twitter these days. While hashtags support might come, full text index search will make it easier to find fellow comics or manga lovers. Whether by message or their profile on #Bluesky.
By design #Mastodon makes it very hard to discover, basically it’s hashtags.
— Algorithms (discoverability I)
#BlueskySocial intends a marketplace for algorithms. This allows third parties to deliver as well as users to decide which fits best. Hard to guess exactly what it will mean, but I imagine generic or specific algorithms, eg. about gaming, dev or art. Imagine getting those hot posts, while not necessarily following people, so you’ll discover something new on #Bluesky every day.
This leads us to the next topic. What if you don’t like your #BlueskySocial AppViewer? Switch! While you can move from #Mastodon to another instance. It can be tricky and you could lose content if an instance is being a jerk.
— Portable profile data
The AppViewer for your feed and your profile data with posts is separated on purpose. Consider it a Git repo with a local and remote copy. You can also move to another repo, if you want to, or if your remote repo disappeared.
— Moderation
While #Mastodon has many instances, each one is moderated separately. That means once you have many users, you need people to moderate else you might get defederated.
#BlueskySocial has a different approach. Self labeling, automatic labeling using machine learning, and community labeling (in dev) of posts.
The #Bluesky app has multiple options of filtering for the AppViewer layer that builds your feed. Note that your posts are always yours. They are never deleted, only filtered.
