#BooksOf2023 #19: Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. This was a great, uplifting story about the friendship between a septuagenarian and an octopus that reads like a Fredrik Backman novel.

Finished #reading Yellowface by R.F. Kuang. Mad at myself for wasting time. The main protagonist first steals the work of a friend who died, it becomes famous bestseller, then she self-destructs (through over 3/4 of the book) by losing mind over Twitter trolls calling her out for plagiarism. I kept reading in hope it gets better. It never does. It’s a very underwhelming slo-mo trainwreck of a book. Should have just looked away. #books #BooksofMastodon

Unfortunately, it all feels like tokenism, to a certain degree. It's as if the author drew up a list of everything Pinoy and dumped them all in a book. I know it's unfair, but I couldn't help but compare it with Michelle Zauner's Crying in H Mart. Zauner was able to seamlessly incorporate elements of Korean culture without them sounding painfully contrived. Unfortunately, I can't say the same thing about this book.
I'm begrudgingly trying to finish this novel (more than halfway done, whew!). The supposedly humorous parts didn't humor me. The characters all seem like caricatures. Most of the Pinoy elements are cliché. Suffice to say that I am not enjoying this book.
I didn't have high expectations to begin with. But what disappoints me is that I expected it to be relatable because it talks about my own culture...(1/2)

Just finished #reading The Perfume Burned His Eyes by Michael Imperioli (of #Sopranos fame). It's a novel set mid #1970s NY with Lou Reed and his then partner Rachel as central figures in the story of a young man's coming of age. An odd #book, but as a #LouReed fan from back then I enjoyed the imagined Lou Reed character. Overall a sweet little book, but helped by being a big fan from back then and knowing the context (I even met Rachel outside a gig briefly in 76 or 77). #BooksofMastodon

Just finished #reading this #book by Becky Chambers, the second in the Monk & Robot series: A Prayer for the Crown-Shy.
It’s a lovely little book, but didn’t quite speak to me like the first one. That probably has more to do with the mental place I’ve been in as I read them than the books themselves, and it’s still an easy 4 stars.

Just finished Martha Wells' latest fantasy novel, The Witch-King. Overall, an enjoyable time. 4/5 ⭐ Would keep reading if I didn't run out of pages.
I'm on leave as of 1700, so I'm prepping my Kindle for a riotous week of reading. We have the official #Gnu #Emacs manuals, Deep Work by Cal Newport (which I'm halfway through), and both of @malarkey excellent books.

Totally didn't see this coming!
Jokes aside, it was bad before but now I have completely given up on buying ebooks or go through Kindle Unlimited as a result. Instead, I do it the slow way, via Goodreads or social media recommendations. That's the only way I know to cut through the noise, and I feel bad for the #WritingCommunity because they have to battle through this trash to be found 😔

Well, I read a LOT of historical fiction, and I have to say that most of it is "Harrowing Tales of Sad, Traumatized ____________", frequently during colonial times. These days, at least 1/2 of what I read is by writers from a different ethnocultural background and/or sexuality than mine so I'm getting a range of genres with a different lens than mine. Lots of good stuff out there.

This is probably going to be controversial but what the heck.
I avoid Asian lit that the West celebrates because they tend to be "Harrowing Tales of Sad, Traumatised Asians". I'm not sure why the West find them so fascinating (though my mind thinks of rather uncharitable ideas). I especially despise stories set in colonial times.
I'm totally fine with "Tales of Murderous Asians", however.
To which I will happily recommend Keigo Higashino.

I helped my wife with some pre-course application last night (she's applying for a #DataScience bootcamp).
Later, she said it was nice to "see me use my brain". It wasn't an insult, all my previous jobs have been quite mindless, whereas her job is very challenging.
I then started reading my new book: The Computers That Made Britain from @Raspberry_Pi press. I got stuck on a word in the second paragraph 🤣🤣
In my defence, she'd never heard of inveigled either.
