I've been studying like a champ, but now I'm sick (not covid, yay) so enforced downtime from study.

I've finished a book, I've started a new book, and now I'm doing some drawing. Too sick to remain upright for long, but not too sick to read or draw. This type of illness I can handle.

@Kingsley Uyi Idehen @Alex Oberhauser :verified_o: @Helge Heß @Free Software Foundation @Chris Trottier @Mastodon @Fediverse News Generic servers would mean that all instances of the #Fediverse are basically the same project with the same features and the same capabilities.

This would mean that either the Fediverse lost lots of features (long-form blogging, audio streaming, video streaming, connections beyond #ActivityPub etc.) because they would have to be sacrificed to achieve total unification, or people coming over from Twitter would have to learn to wrangle an absolute feature monster that can do everything. Not to mention the monstrous mobile app that'd be necessary to harness all that power on the small touch screen of a smartphone.

In other words: You'd either have to cut Hubzilla down to Mastodon's capabilities or inflate #Mastodon to be able to do everything that #Hubzilla can do plus everything that #Funkwhale can do plus everything that #PeerTube can do plus everything that #BookWyrm can do plus everything that...

Don't forget that the Fediverse can do more than unformatted microblogging.

One-size-fits-all clients for all projects from micro.blog to Hubzilla to #Owncast are an illusion, too. What should they be able to do? Basic Twitter-like microblogging? That'd make all features of more advanced projects inaccessible. Everything? Then you may only want to do some microblogging, but you'd have to do that with an app whose user interface, all menus put together, is bigger than a barn door and mostly useless because the project you've joined doesn't support 99% of it.

#Pleroma #Misskey #Calckey #Akkoma #Friendica #Hubzilla

We see only a few books at a time unless I'm missing pages in my search through my accounts.

Lists seems to be the closest thing to a workable catalog—except that I still have to adjust my browser view to zoom out until everything is tiny to see more than a few books at a time. Search is very limited. Finding previous comments and reviews isn't easy.

If someone is interacting with thousands of books after adding them, I would like to know how.

@shadowfals @feditips @bookwyrm #BookWyrm is I think totally set up for avid readers. We have users tracking thousands of books that they've read, so I'm not really sure what you mean. Any books you've added will be on your shelves. And in your profile you have the "reviews and comments" feed which has the history of your reviews etc.

I just signed up for a #Bookwyrm account. ❤️

@3x10to8mps @feditips @bookwyrm it is much the same reason as Pixelfed exists for photos, as #Bookwyrm offers unique features around books such as book ratings, progress logging, etc not found on more generic platforms like Mastodon. Also on the local feed you are interacting with readers and authors specifically, as a common interest.

But if you just want to make a rating post on completion of a book, any network would work well.

I've started playing with #Bookwyrm and I'm wandering if there is an easier way to upload the metadata for my books. Like, is there a way to have them scrape the info from Amazon? Also, is there a way to mark myself as the author of those books?

@feditips @bookwyrm

Are any #BookWyrm instances or linked sites set up for avid readers who want to track or reference more than a few books at a time?

When I tried out BookWyrm before, I was disappointed by how difficult it is to find books previously added within my own account.

Everything felt geared to reading one or two books at a time, reviewing it for any followers, then moving on to another book with no interest in past reads or old recommendations. That's not what I do....

I'm also in a love affair with #logseq and #readwise

All three are nicely connected and help me stay on top of my reading. However, for books I may integrate yet another service called #bookwyrm and use it to maintain list of books (fiction and non-fiction) I found relevant. What do you think? Overkill? :-)

💀 Skulls!

“You probably don’t think much about skulls. So what’s the big deal about them? Well, every head of every person you’ve ever seen has a skull inside. And that includes you!”

This is a super cute kid’s book explaining that rather than being scary, skulls serve several very important purposes. Namely, they’re like a car seat for your brain and have holes for sounds, light, air, and grilled cheese sandwiches. Fun!

I keep seeing lots of people who are totally giddy about the #Fediverse, who are gushing over it, who want to promote it, who want it to spread.

And who want it to advance. To learn new abilities. To grow new features.

That's all fine and dandy.

But almost all of these people are still fully convinced that the Fediverse equals #Mastodon. And nothing else. At least not until Tumblr and P92 join the fray. Okay, maybe the #WordPress plug-in that's the talk of the town now that it has become official. Okay, maybe a few of them have also heard of #Pixelfed and/or #PeerTube because their makers are all over the Fediverse.

When these people are talking about the Fediverse, they mean Mastodon. And when they're thinking about the Fediverse, they're only thinking about Mastodon. Because that's all they know.

So these people want new cool features or even new cool use-cases in the Fediverse, stuff that Mastodon doesn't have. They want Mastodon to have it, or they want new projects to be launched that have these features.

If only they knew.

If only they knew that everything, literally everything they propose has already been done. Yes, in the Fediverse. In projects which are fully federated with Mastodon. Why don't they know? Because they've never heard of any of these projects, much less what they can do.

So they want "quote-tweets" in the Fediverse. Which means they want Mastodon to introduce them.

Tell you what: Mastodon is the only microblogging project in the Fediverse that doesn't have quotes. Not only will Eugen Rochko never introduce them, but all the other projects have them with Mastodon forks #GlitchSoc such as being the exception. #Pleroma has them. #Akkoma has them. #MissKey has them. #CalcKey has them. #FoundKey has them. #GoToSocial has them. The old heavyweights #Friendica and #Hubzilla have them, and so does Hubzilla's youngest decendant, the #Streams project. Et cetera.

You want "quote-tweets"? Switch to something that isn't Mastodon, and you've got "quote-tweets".

Or text formatting in posts like bold type, italics, underline, strikethrough, code blocks etc. Would be great if Mastodon had that, in spite of other people saying they don't want it.

Again: Pleroma already has it. Akkoma already has it. MissKey already has it. CalcKey already has it. FoundKey already hasit. GoToSocial already has it. Friendica already has it. Hubzilla already has it (look at this post at its source in a Web browser and weep). (streams) already has it. And so forth. This time, even Mastodon forks have it.

It has been done. It has been done many times. It has actually been done before Mastodon.

Next, long-form blog posting. We need something like #Medium in the Fediverse that isn't Medium itself. Mastodon's 500 characters are too few, and Twitter-like threads are inconvenient.

Except we already have that, too. #Plume and #WriteFreely are about as close to Medium as Mastodon is to Twitter, including clean and distraction-less layouts. Oh, and Hubzilla can do that, too.

By the way: Again, Mastodon is the only Fediverse project that can do microblogging that has a 500-character limit. Pleroma, Mastodon's oldest direct competitor, raised it to a default of 6,000. MissKey and its forks have 3,000 as a default. Friendica, Hubzilla and (streams) have character limits of "go ahead, drop your short story in one post in its entirety," so virtually none at all. And yes, Hubzilla has long-form writing on top of that.

Speaking of Hubzilla: Most recently, there has been the idea to uncouple one's online identity from a specific instance. Your online self should no longer be firmly tied to any one server exclusively. Now, this sounds so ambitious, it might just as well be science-fiction.

What if I told you that just this very thing already exists as well?

No, really. No, I'm not making this up. But you should know by now that I'm not.

Better yet: It was conceived as early as 2011. By the guy who launched Friendica in 2010. He invented a new principle named #NomadicIdentity and a new protocol named #Zot. In its early stages already, even with no technical implementation yet, Zot was more powerful than ActivityPub is today.

In 2012, Zot became reality as the basis of a Friendica fork which later became known as #RedMatrix and, upon its 1.0 stable release in late 2015, which is still prior to Mastodon's initial release, Hubzilla. Hubzilla is still being developed and improved, and it has a fledgling but growing "successor of a successor" named (streams) which offers nomadic identity, too.

Now, what does this nomadic identity even look like? Well, not only does it let you move your channel(s) around from instance to instance with ease and, unlike on Mastodon, with absolutely everything on it. No, it also lets you have your channel on multiple instances at once. Identical clones, automagically kept in sync in real-time, all with the same identity, the same content, the same connections.

Your identity is no longer strapped down to one instance. Not only that, but your channel, your posts, your content is no longer hosted on only one server. This means that if one instance with one of your clones goes down, you still have spares.

Okay, so how about community groups/forums? That'd be cool.

Well, for one, there's #Guppe. It's basically bolted on Mastodon, and in practice, it's centralised because there's only one instance. But it's impractical to use.

Besides, this is becoming a running gag here, Friendica, Hubzilla and (streams) have exactly this built-in and open for the rest of the Fediverse.

Better yet: There's also #Lemmy which amounts to a federated #Reddit or #HackerNews clone. So not only does Lemmy offer this, it specialises in it.

Hubzilla alone can provide Fediverse feature suggestions with "has been done" for years to come. Not to mention what else the Fediverse has to offer. Even if someone should want a free, non-commercial, decentralised, federated #GoodReads clone in the Fediverse, it has been done: #BookWyrm.

🥳 My kittens are three weeks old today! They’re starting to wrestle and play, so look forward to more exciting kittenish content in the near future.

Mama Jezebel (Belly) has adapted to her duties admirably. It’s so neat to watch instinct direct her actions. The babies have finally been named:

The spicy tabby: Ivan the Terrible
The dark tabby: Arfurr Conan Spoiled
The calico one: Cleocatra
The black one: Edgrrr Allan Purr

A light fluffy tabby with text reading “Ivan the Terrible.” A darker tabby with text reading “Arfurr Conan Spoiled.” A fluffy calico with text reading “Cleocatra.” A black kitten with text reading “Edgrrr Allan Purr.” They are all adorable.

I think I'm going to stop posting reviews of books I read on bookwyrm because when I read a book I don't like for whatever reason, it makes me feel bad for the writer to say so but not saying so makes me feel bad for the future readers who want an honest review. It's a real quandary. @bookstodon #books #bookwyrm

Thanks @bookwyrm,
the sync from #BookWyrm.social works like a charm. I posted https://bookwyrm.social/user/realn2s/comment/1110532 and it was instantly visible on my #Mastodon timeline
😁👍🏻

@atomicpoet@mastodon.social I saw this on my #Mastodon account & reposted it! 😁

I am on
#Misskey (this account) which I use to review & recommend interesting movies, shows, music videos & books for people to check out!

I am also on
#Pixelfed too (over at @darnell@darnell.app) which I occasionally use for personal photography.

I also use
#WriteFreely (@darnell@darnell.day) too which I talk about mostly web tech & the #Fediverse.

I have tried other platforms like
#Pleroma, #Calckey & #MicroBlog. I have briefly flirted with #Bookwyrm, #Peertube & #Funkwhale.

One awesome fact about each Fediverse platform is that they have distinct cultures that (unsurprisingly) reflect some of the creed of their founders.

Mastodon is much more about harmony & is progressive politically (Content Warnings are highly encouraged) while Pleroma is more about expressing views without restraint & is politically more conservative / anarchist.

Misskey is more about celebratory, vibrant expression & leans towards the fun side of life (it's not very political over here).

WriteFreely is a long-winded group & they like explaining things in detail.

Pixelfed is for photography lovers, with some video mixed in.

I solo host on all my instances using Managed Hosting services & while I love Mastodon, it's good to immerse yourself in other platforms in the Fediverse in order to meet new people & experience new cultures.

Plus, you might have a greater affinity toward one platform (Misskey is my favorite so far!
😊).

I thought I might try this again: is there a way to delete my data from my #Bookwyrm account to start over? I brought my books from #Goodreads and I am not happy with how much I need to clean up the data. I would like to keep my account but start fresh and bring my old data over slowly. I see how I can delete individual books but that will take quite a while for me to do.

Might it be best to create another account and close my old one?

Thanks!

Is there a standard way to relay to the larger #Bookwyrm segment of the fediverse? I'd love to link the tiny little shared bookwyrm instance I have into the larger sphere.

My #Bookwyrm instance has hit a new milestone. Over 200,000 works! A work is a book that could have multiple editions.

How many editions does Bookwyrm.tech have? Over 643,000!

Some of these books are added by being part of the #fediverse, however, the majority are from @bookbot . This is my scraper and importer looking for all the technical books out there from publishers like Packt, Wiley, Apress, O'Reilly, Manning, and my favorite, No Starch.

Do I have your favorite book? https://bookwyrm.tech/search

Literacy is liberating! I've made it my purpose to invest a portion of all my book-related sales (books, merch, training etc) to Chicago Books to Women in Prison. try to stick it out on #Goodreads, maybe until #Readwise unbeta's their new shiny thing? sign up at bookwyrm.social? spend time hosting my own #bookwyrm instance? (lolno) Find some other goodreads-a-like? Just move my reading list to #Obsidian and eschew the social aspect entirely?

Conclusion: at the moment, cross-posting from #BookWyrm doesn't meet all of my needs (ALT text for book cover image, hashtags for Mastodon discoverability, no importing of full Bookwyrm post text, no tagging Mastodon accounts).

I'll keep posting separately on each platform since I want to contribute to both. So resuming my 2023 reading thread here. Eh heh heh. 😬

Reporting back on cross-posting from #Bookwyrm to Mastodon: it works! And without the expected delay of the post appearing in my Mastodon feed.

However, it doesn't pull the body of the post over, just the headline of my review (rating and image too). Which makes you have to click through, and removes discoverability since the hashtags are in the body post as well as my tag for the #Bookstodon group. Also! No way to enter ALT text for the image. 😕

I'm moving my 2023 book thread to #Bookwyrm, the Fediverse equivalent of Goodreads. Apparently, you can see/interact with Bookwyrm posts from Mastodon and vice versa but it took me awhile to figure out how:

I had to follow my Bookwyrm account from here + (optionally?) vice versa. Now I can Boost my Bookwyrm posts into Mastodon for you to see. Gonna try it in a few...

Does anyone know how to add a single read book to #BookWyrm?

I am really having difficulty with the site.

I did finally get my GoodReads list up. However, it doesn't include books I am currently reading, as it is probably a decade old.

When I search for the current book, it can't find it.

Maybe I am confused, and see no where to ask questions. Or get answers.
